Finally finished my cabinet wall, built around my systainers. Getting everything on casters and moving old organization stuff out to make room for an assembly/ outfeed table, which will be on casters and have onboard storage in the form of drawers. All my big machinery is wheeled. I'm getting there. Each step I take, I see my speed and productivity increase. I'm getting pretty excited.

In addition to writing the length of the nails, screws, etc on the little container bins, draw the length as well. If the bins are white, you can use a sharpie marker. If you're using black bins then make a label (like a P-Touch) with a black line the length of the fastener in the bin. That makes it easy to see what size goes in the bin in case you drop the odd one into the wrong bin.

Great thoughts on organization. Here are three more, #1 Keep some color, especially white and black permanent markers around to mark things. Most of my brad nails come in little plastic boxes. I use a marker on the outside of the box to indicate the size of the brad on the top and side of the case. #2 My drill press table has outlasted two other drill presses. It's just a piece of beat up Baltic Birch plywood, mounted just above the steel bed so I can get to the handle in the back to adjust the height. The biggest change it's had in 15 years was my drilling a set of 20mm holes in the tops so I could use my clamps from my MFT and assembly benches on it. #3 Keep a back scratched in a prominent part of your shop. You never know when your gonna need to scratch that itch you just can't reach.

The key to getting and staying organized comes from lean manufacturing: Daily 3S, which stands for "Sweep, Sort, Standardize": - Sweep is cleaning and getting rid of anything unnecessary. This is also the best way to identify maintenance issues early on. - Sort is setting things in order, what we usually think of with organizing. - Standardize is to make sorting last with things like labels, kaizen foam, etc. Dedicating a set amount of time at the beginning of each day, say 30 minutes, will rapidly result in major improvements with significant time savings and freed up space.

Great tips, took me forever to put casters on EVERYTHING and my flow is so much better! Quick tip for anyone building a workbench that has an MFT3. Build your bench around a motorized standing desk frame (plywood platform w/ wheels - bolt the feet of the desk frame to it). Melamine top on the frame. MFT3 sits on top most of the time, but when you need outfeed support for it or another tool you can take down the MFT3 and adjust the height of the standing desk to whatever you want.

Great stuff, and I am adopting "The Power of 10" today, both in my home shop and the one at work. Just want to add an alternative to casters. I am not a fan of casters. It seems even the good locking ones still let machines move around too much for my taste. One of the best things I adopted for my shop was a narrow frame, short fork pallet jack. The forks are just under 24" outside to outside and 32" long. The thing can spin around inside a 48" circle. Most of the machines and work tables in my shop are on stands with stretchers that are 4" above the floor. I can pick up anything and move it anywhere in seconds, and when I set it back down, it's on a solid footing. It doesn't work for everything, so some stuff is on casters, but I prefer the pallet jack option if it is practical.

I would use the Festool Systainer System but the boxes are to expensive, cheaper to make drawers from wood. I do used the ones that the tools come in and stack them on shelves.

Hey Sedge, Just finished building my new 32x28 shop and am in the process of moving in. Going to borrow several of your ideas and bring them into my shop. Question, what are the sheet goods you have on your floor and why did you use them?
@sedgetool

they sheets are 4mm thick MDF .. I use them to protect the floor and helps when dropping bits... also it brightens up the shop and seems to be better on my feet / legs... every once in a while I sand a section and put a seal coat on it to make the area clean..... hope this helps...

Sounds stupid but having a rolling tool cart with different levels on it helped a lot. Usually up top I keep the tools, bits, and accessories. Cut parts down below. Instead of putting things where ever there is space or on my work bench, has saved a lot of frustration
