Jeff and Sarah take a detour off I-80 to explore the history of Lovelock, Nevada where pioneer emigrants stopped, Amelia Earhart flopped and Charlie Chaplin film film co-star and girlfriend Edna Purviance popped. This is episode #31 of the KZfaq show "History Hunters."

I lived here briefly during high school and at the time I couldn't care less about the place. Now that I am older and a huge history buff, I really miss the town. Lost of history for such a small and remote town.

My wife and I have flown into Lovelock a few times on our way from Caldwell, ID to the Central Coast of California. I even stayed night there driving home from Stockton, CA after going to look at an airplane. It's nice to learn a bit of the history of the little town. Thank you.

You are correct about it being a town that most people pass by, especially since they built the I80 freeway where as before you had to actually slow down and drive through it...amazing how much history is in the smallest of places!

In Lovelock Nevada and Pershing County in Nevada, there are the following Nevada State Routes are: NV-396, NV-397, NV-398, NV-399, NV-400, NV-401, NV-852, NV-854, NV-856, and NV-860. Lovelock will stay as incorporated town of 1,600, and it is about 92 miles northeast of Reno Nevada. It is 72 miles southwest of Winnemucca Nevada. There will be two interstate highways in one. They are: I-80 and future I-11, the latter will enroute from Las Vegas to Boise Idaho, via Tonopah, Hawthorne, Fallon, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Orovada, and McDermitt. These towns do have food, gas, and lodging, since there are no service in southeastern Oregon between McDermitt Nevada and Homedale Idaho, if I-11 will be built on its way to Canada or to Panhandle of Idaho.

Thank you for a great video. My mother grew up in Lovelock so I am quite familiar with the history of the place. As a matter of fact mother was friends with several pioneer families in the area. Spent many a summer vacation there as a kid. As an inside, Lovelock, California that is above Paradise, California is also named after same Lovelocks. I hope you stopped at the "Two Stiffs Selling Gas" gas station? 😁

Hi Jeff & Sara, We just visited Lovelock and are happy to report we found your lock, but the writing faded... I took a picture of it, but cannot attach it to the comment. We put our lock ring next to yours. We also visited the Lovelock Cave which has a cool Native American story. Thanks for making these informative videos and I shared your channel with 2 couples, one of who found the lock they placed there 22 years ago!

I Grew up in Lovelock in the late 50's and most all of the 60's. Looks like half of the downtown buildings are gone, and freeway changed the Landscape of the south side of town when it was finished in the early 80's, it was the final linkage of Interstate 80. It was a great place to grow up in.

My wife and I got married in the Round Room, in the historic courthouse. When we locked our lock, I threw the keys on the roof of the courthouse. Edit: Because I have a terrible habit of commenting before the video is done, let me compliment the mention of the history behind the design of the courthouse (I learned this today) and the mention of Essenay Studios in Niles CA. Niles was a big movie making town for a few years. I grew up in the East Bay, and Niles Canyon Rd (CA-84) is a pretty but dangerous drive.

Went through there a couple of years ago.... got family and friends.... saw the MiG-15 on the airfield on the way out to the caves.... went by the turn off to Virginia City where a cousin lives... but too bad mid February weather was brutal and my host was on a mission to get to the California side of Tahoe to pick up a bunch of wine... we stopped at some place on the lake and had some of the best deep fried squid in the most unlikely place and a "rum runner" which messed me up good. Was invited to work on a cannabis farm but covid mess that up... The gun toting throwback cousin from Virginia City drove out to Fallon to hang out .... great times I live in Asia.

12:10 Going to assume that 'Unknown' is Frederick J. Noonan (see the newspaper clipping you encircled at 13:10--he is mentioned again by name in the last column of that clipping), her 'mechanic/navigator', who was with her when she 'disappeared'. on that historic, attempted 'round-the-world flight in the 1930s

I got a ticket in Lovelock for passing a rocket. It was being towed down the street very slowly and I passed it on the right. No lie.

@@jbenziggy oh ok !! I looked at the real estate but it was all mostly on outskirts of town, and a few very old smaller homes, and thanks I'll do that.

CaliforniaFly She wasn't the best. Poncho Barnes was a more accomplished aviator than Earhart. Pancho broke her records before her but never got the recognition she so justly deserved because she never died like Amelia.

Yeah she was a real beauty and very unappreciated in Hollywood. I think it's sad what happened to her. It would make a good video if I had the time and resources to look into it.

Thanks for the tour of Lovelock, Nevada. We were wondering how you're able to do all this traveling while working 2 full time jobs? What do you both do for employment, if I may ask?
