In this first episode of my 1989 F250 7.3 IDI build video series, I'lll be replacing the oil and fuel filter. This is a fairly easy job that can be done in just a few minutes, so it's a great candidate for a quick and easy video.

My man, mixing up that homemade injector cleaner like a mad scientist! Gotta love it. My dad had one of these old IDI trucks while working for Sunshine John Deer and was a salesman. He delivered a lot of equipment around South Louisiana with it. I remember being a kid climbing in it and on the trailer with all those sweet John Deers! Thanks for bringing one of these old girls back to her former glory.

Gotta love the “while we wait we hydrate” nod to Stalekracker👍🏻 the glow plugs could be a bad relay. Back on the day we used to use relays off Western snowplows as they were cheaper and lasted longer. I don’t care what anyone says, none of us ever had a problem with it. As for the A/C it might be vacuum controlled. If it is, take a look at the white vacuum line, they always got dried out and brittle. I replaced mine with regular old black vacuum line and that did the trick. I think it needs a rear sliding window though, kinda surprised it doesn’t have one

The Dash Vents work off a Vacuum Accumulator behind / above the Glove Box on most vehicles, I've used Universal Accumulators to abandon a couple of OEM accumulators because they're difficult to get to and make an OEM Style Repair and Vacuum is Vacuum. When accumulators fail completely, they cause the issue you're having, when they begin getting weak they will cause the air to move from the dash vents to the windshield at acceleration.

I did the same thing on an IDI, ditch the mechanical and run a decent low pressure elec fuel pump, you can run the pump off keyed ignition. Should always start great, even if tired, bad rings, etc.

When It comes to fuel pumps you'll get pro and cons. I personally run the regular mechanical pump and haven't had issues. I know a lot of guys went with the electric Facet lift pump and they love them.

The mechanical lift pump runs off the lobe of the camshaft. With it in there still it isn’t hurting anything, however, it offers a possibly for a place to leak oil and slight risk of something catastrophic happening on the lobe of the camshaft. That is a rare possibility. I would recommend also when you are wiring your relay up for the Eletric pump to secure the pump somehow with zip ties to keep the hoses from rubbing and wearing into a point of leaking in the future. Great content as usual 👍
@tdotw77
@tdotw77 Жыл бұрын
Agree with this too! I can see that fuel pump hose rubbing right thru on the metal, so secure\protect themas needed. And yes the mechanical pump isn't hurting anything, probably just a broken rubber diaphragm inside. If you're gonna keep electric one, I'd just pull it and put block-off plate to stop one of the many oil leaks. Lol

@Farmer_1776
@Farmer_1776 Жыл бұрын
Just put a block off plate on it. The fuel lubricates a diaphragm, but without fuel to go through it would eventually dry out the seal and run engine oil out. Also, you can pull the “spark plugs” out and put 12v power on the head and ground the threads, it will glow red or if it’s bad not.
@MikeTW
@MikeTW Жыл бұрын
I think those older trucks use a vacuum block to adjust the blend door for the AC so you could have a vacuum issue. Or the door itself might be stuck or broken. Probably have to get into pulling the dash pad to see what you're working with back there.

7:16 no control module fortunately. these trucks used vaccum operated servos to control the blend doors, you may have a broken vacuum line or the "soup can " resevoir may be rusted out. If I recall I it defaults to pushing air out the defrost when theirs a lost of vaccum.
@drewcole100
@drewcole100 Жыл бұрын
Hvac will stick on defrost when there is no vaccume in system. Gotta check the vaccume lines running on firewall and etc. Fuel pump has two lines one is return to tank other is supply to fuel filter!

I have owned 3 of these 7.3 IDI's, currently have a 1992, never had an electric fuel pump but I have always wanted to. From what I have read and seen, they say t put a block off plate in place of the mechanical if youre running electric, something to do with risking fuel getting past the mechanical and into the crank case? The block off plate from a BBC apparently is a direct fit. Also these things don't want to start without glow plugs even if you have a damn blowtorch down the intake lol They will run off almost anything including radioactive unicorn piss too.

You can leave it in or block it. As others said, it can leak oil eventually. But with this being an emp/disaster vehicle, it may be better to go back to the mecahanical pump. The electric pump could fry with a big enough emp, the mechanical won't. Just something to think about.

your ac controls might be cable actuated and might have fallen off. which won't change where the flow comes from. and your ac system/ lines may have failed internally and lost pressure, i don't think you can buy R12 anymore and you might have to buy an R134a swap kit.

If you leave the mechanical pump in there when the diaphragm ruptures it will puke all your fuel either on the ground or in your crank. I've had multiple of these old idiots and the mechanical pump has failed on everyone. But technically you can leave it in there and pump through it.

You can leave the mechanical pump.... the lobe on the camshaft sometimes gets wiped out and the mechanical pump doesn't work, it's a replaceable piece of the cam on the end. NO ATF IN THE FUEL.... ITS NOT GOOD FOR THE INJECTORS.

@COLTS WAY you're doing great and love the content bud! ATF is debatable. It will burn and old diesels can handle it BUT it's an oil designed not to burn. It creates ash when it burns and can wreak havoc on newer diesels. The combustion chamber of an idi is something I wouldn't want to get all ashed up. Also be careful of the glow plug brand you use.... some swell and break off in the head.

Not bashing your page but me my dad and 7 other technicians said just turn it off. And you’d never take a idi motor and start adding junk nothing is wrong with the way it was built
