When finishing a concrete floor, especially one that will serve as the final floor in a house, paying attention to detail is crucial for several important reasons. Imagine you're watching me, a concrete floor finisher, working with a power trowel on a video. The power trowel in my hands is a tool that spins with blades to smooth and finish the concrete surface. Here's why every move I make and every pass of the trowel matters:
Aesthetic Appeal: The finished concrete floor is not just a base; it's the actual floor you'll see every day. It needs to look polished and visually pleasing. Uneven areas, marks, or imperfections will stand out and detract from the beauty of your space. A well-finished floor will have a uniform appearance, enhancing the overall look of your home.
Durability and Longevity: The way a concrete floor is finished affects its durability. A properly finished floor is more resistant to wear and tear, water penetration, and staining. It means that by paying attention to the details now, I'm ensuring that your floor will last longer and require less maintenance over time. A well-executed finish with a power trowel compacts the surface, making it stronger and more resilient.
Safety: A floor with uneven spots or a rough finish can be a tripping hazard. By meticulously smoothing and leveling the floor, I'm not just working on its appearance but also making it safer for everyone who walks on it. A smooth, well-finished floor reduces the risk of accidents in your home.
Economic Value: A beautifully finished concrete floor can increase the value of your property. It's a feature that potential buyers look for because it signifies quality and attention to detail. If the floor is finished poorly, it could lead to costly repairs or refinishing jobs in the future, decreasing the property's value.
Satisfaction and Comfort: Living with a floor that has imperfections can be frustrating. It's not just about how it looks but also how it feels underfoot. A smoothly finished floor provides a more comfortable surface to walk on. It's also easier to clean and maintain, making your living space more enjoyable and hygienic.
As you watch me glide the power trowel across the concrete, know that every pass is made with intention. I'm not just smoothing out the concrete; I'm crafting a surface that meets all these critical criteria. The goal is to leave behind a floor that's not only beautiful to look at but also durable, safe, and valuable. Paying attention to the details in this process is what differentiates a good job from a great one. And that's what you want in your home: a floor that reflects craftsmanship and care, providing a solid foundation for everything else you build upon it.

Mike you and your guys do such nice work and take so much pride in the job Most people don’t realize how important it is to have a flat floor with a proper finish, it makes such a difference in the finished product.

I miss running the edges with mine five inch burner, that popcorn crack sound when your pressing with a define angle, criss crossing my passes. Got damn good at blending that black glass look.

Mike, I don't ever recall one time where I saw your crew taking active steps to address curing the concrete slab. Why is that? Understand that spraying a curing compound could possibly interfere with certain flooring finishing choices but why not use another alternative?

With the radiant heat in the slab, the entire house will be plenty warm.

I believe a company made a battery powered sofcut saw. It was at world of concrete. Apparently it gets 2000 linear feet of cutting before you'll need to charge up the battery.

I remember doing a big warehouse slab that the owner was looking for crazy f numbers. F’s of level and F’s of flat. It was going to be a completely automated warehouse that laser guided robots would traverse and retrieve and stock supplies. We used a laser screed and pulled it off. Never got a call back so I guess it was good enough for the robots.

Concrete driveways aren't a thing here in Maine. We used to do a lot of them about 20 years ago but not now.

I would love to see a video where you don't just shine it a little bit, You take it all the way to glass. For my own homes when I do a finish floor I want it burned all the way, So I have a gloss surface with no need for coatings. not just somewhat flat with a sheen waiting for epoxy. I try to avoid doing my own flatwork, But only a couple outfits have been able to get the surface anywhere close to as smooth and glass I want it. So I have to come back with a slow speed machine and take the grit into the several thousands. Taking the surface to that level of shine is not something I hardly ever see done.

Used to do this with Alpha Concrete out of Vermont. Did a ton of home depots and Lowe's all over the Northeast. Long finish cycle might not have been in this budget.
