What is even more interesting to me is that behind that fear of "they will do to us what we did to them" is the clear aknowledgement and recognition that what was done to other cultures and races and civilizations by western whites was sooooo deeply disturbing.

FFS, I wish he *would* "expose the truth." Because he's obsessing over the race issue, when he clearly doesn't know who he's defending. Rishi Sunak isn't some brand new, unknown quantity. He's a known, public figure, a conservative Tory, and a Brexiteer. If Trevor actually wants to focus on his policies, qualifications, and views, then he should do it. Then we can be done with this whole "leave poor Rishi Rich alone."

We're not, we don't care. Sunak IS already extremely powerful. So is his equally insanely rich wife. Daily Show clearly doesn't know this. He is approaching billionaire status. He also had the most elite, prestigious British education imaginable. No one stopped him attaining any power, he was elected to office and is a very established politician here in the UK. It's between the scenes where you can see him for the thoughtful and well-traveled person he really is. Interesting moreso because, even with what little I've seen of him, it seemed that the script meshed much more with Jon Stewart's personal style and expressions during his time with the show.

I am English and the irony is that Rishi absolutely stands for the same system of racism towards minorities and BME (POC) in Britain as his white colleagues. He created the policy of deporting refugees who seek asylum in Britain to Rwanda (even if they have no connection there). He also wanted to illegally detain refugees on barges offshore instead of allowing them to land when their applications are processed, as is required by international law. His party literally said they will create a "Hostile Environment" (the official name of the policy) for immigrants in Britain
@joniharrison9492
@joniharrison9492 Жыл бұрын
I would just like to offer another British perspective on this issue. I grew up on a council estate in the UK. One of the things I have loved about my childhood in the UK was the exposure to a variety of cultural backgrounds. I went to school with British people who had heritages from India, Pakistan, China and Jamaica. I considered it to be an enriching part of my life since, in our poverty, it was unlikely I was ever going to be able to visit these nations and experience their culture for myself. As a white British woman I got to experience being at day gigs with my friends who had to plan gigs during the day because they weren't allowed out at night, we attended Indian weddings, and I personally got to observe some of the most studious and hard-working women succeed in their education. I would gladly endorse anyone of these women, who happened to have an Indian heritage, for Prime Minister of the UK. Unfortunately, what I dislike about the latest Prime Minister (and I will be happy to be proven wrong), is his continuation of the class oppression that has been in existence in the UK for centuries now. There are many minority groups in the UK that will not benefit from the rise of Sunak because he doesn't represent them. He represents the system that has been in place oppressing other nations and the poor within the UK for hundreds of years. If Rishi Sunak has in fact redistributed 'wealth' from the poor areas of the country to his wealthier constituents then he is doing very little that is different from the colonial UK that Trevor Noah speaks against. The Conservative Party in the UK has a history of representing the interests of the aristocracy and the wealthy in the UK. They are also the ones who built the empire. www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/05/video-emerges-of-rishi-sunak-admitting-to-taking-money-from-deprived-areas

I don't live in the UK but in a neighbouring country, one which has lots of cultural ties to the UK, so we do follow their news very closely, and most people have family & friends that live there (including myself). I haven't seen that many people react negatively to Rishi Sunak because he has Indian heritage, and those that do are only a small, if vocal, minority (and interestingly enough, they seem to be people who would more naturally lean Tory, which is his party). Most people who are reacting negatively to him are citing his background as an investment banker for Goldman Sachs, his status as a multimillionnaire (and married to a woman whose father is a billionnaire), his general out-of-touch-ness with the average person's everyday struggles and the fact that his policies lean very capitalist. Oh, and that scandal with his wife's tax evasion.

As Indians we are proud that Rishi Sunak became the PM of UK especially considering the history only 75 years back. But we also know that he is a British citizen and will have the UK and its people at the top of his priority, which is absolutely correct. We are not at all concerned about what domestic policies and plans he implements.

Take with a grain of salt: I'm an American. Since our Robber Baron backing Ronnie Raygun was best buddies with Margaret Thatcher the milk snatcher, I'll Never trust a Tory. They stand for nothing but stealing from the poor to give tax breaks to their rich buddies who bribe them to steal from our hard won benefits. I'm so glad I got to tour the UK with a BritRail pass the summer of 1976 & got to speak with a railroad engineer to whom I expressed my wonderment at the great rail service I was experiencing. He said, just wait. The Tories are going to close lots of the local lines: they could care less about rural people's business & personal travel that supports small businesses. When I returned in the early 1980s I was shocked at the poor service I experienced.

On one hand Sunak seems like an extremely intelligent person and its somewhat promising that he was in conflict with Johnson. But he's from a conservative party that has been cleansed of basically anyone but Brexit extremist. He seems more likely to be another Priti Patel instead of a Sadiq Khan. But I guess we'll see.

Indian here: I have little hopes of Sunak being any different from the likes of Johnson and Theresa May. I also fear he'll make some of the same mistakes as Truss. There is also the fact that Sunak isn't some son of poor immigrants who worked his way up; he comes from a very (almost revoltingly) privileged background not too different from that of any upper class white British conservative. He's worth almost 850 million USD for goodness sake and is the son-in-law of one of India's wealthiest people (who, by the way, built his IT empire on the backs of young college grads being paid poverty wages). We shouldn't be quick to dismiss any and all criticism of Sunak as racist, especially if they come from the left in the west and in India. Far right leanings and appreciation of or even links to the RSS are worryingly common among PIOs in the US and UK. We shouldn't also forget that Sunak holds many of the same views as the very UK conservatives we love to bash here (and he has voted along their lines).

I’m not sure I agree with Trevor on this one as an Indonesian American myself I can say yes there are some people whom are very racist against Rishi Sunak and those people should be ashamed of themselves. However in my opinion most people have valid criticisms towards him. He was one of the people who joined Boris’ covid party he was also the one that cut the NHS not to mention the fact that his wife’s families are involved in several controversies in India and around the world because of their shoddy business conduct as well as tax evasions in the UK and the US. So I think I am gonna judge him based on his character rather than the color of his skin. Just because he’s not white doesn’t mean he’s gonna be the British Obama.
