Unpaid internships and the future of work | Documentary
Unpaid internships are a worldwide phenomenon radically changing the way young people enter the labor market. In many countries, unpaid internships are illegal but enforcement remains scant and rare.
Young people are facing three parallel economic problems: unpaid work, student debt and the gig economy. The casualization of the workforce has led to an unprecedent strain on the economic situation of youth, leading to high youth unemployment and one of the biggest cost transfers between generations in modern history.
In an attempt to raise awareness of these issues, David Leo Hyde camped in a tent on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, during his unpaid internship at the United Nations. Six years later, activists around the world are still struggling to grapple with how to tackle this crucial issue.
