I got a Tortem, it put out its first leaf in my care finalllllly. I named her Charmaine because the top broke off but it's still amazing. Formally a headless KZfaqr I thought it was the perfect name!

I love these little discussion things whilst you repot Especially on some plant myths or plant tips 👍 It’s so interesting On the theme of splash variegation especially on Hoyas I think it’s a combination of environment plus Like some Hoyas might be more prone to it then others Just a thought don’t know I think the trick is when you’re buying Hoyas online especially the “splash” to not fall into the trap of paying a higher sum of money because someone has sold a two three leaf cutting of Hoya that has some splash because it might be a sporadic thing

Totally agree!! I have plants in my own collection that have leaves that look totally different even growing in the same environment. Genetics plays a big part I feel. But the reason I don’t really buy Hoyas is because I don’t know much about them and don’t want to get sucked into paying a lot of money for something that’ll end up looking different later, so I usually just purchase from friends!

I love the look of your new leca. I bought a bag of cheap landscape lava stone at a big box store. There are many sizes in the bag so I choose what I need. It has similar properties as you describe liking in the new leca if anyone looking for a cheap alternative. I learn so much from this channel and comments from other subscribers.

46:51 I once heard that fungus gnats are attracted to nose breath!!! Something to do with the carbon dioxide we breath out attracts them towards our faces! 😂 I can’t remember where I heard it but it was a planty KZfaqrs many many years ago, such a random thing that’s stayed with me 🙈

i don't have the ability to put houseplants outside, but i know from when i used to do vegetable gardening you do have to acclimate vegetables when its time to take them outside, starting by bringing them out for an hour or so and increasing over the course of a week or two. i would assume that would also be the case for houseplants

I was thinking the same thing when I saw a that part! I have both indoor plants and an outdoor garden. I live in Texas so I have a big part of the year where i can put my houseplants outside but I usually only put my big plants out for the summer…FLF, bird of paradise, monsteras…. I also throw any plants outside that are giving my hell and let them fend for themselves! Lol It seems to work out…like they do better left on their own without me hovering over them all the time! Then I bring them in for the winter and we get along again! Haha!

The thai constellation is stable in its variegation and it won’t revert - if you have “one” that has done that, it’s not a Thai, but probably a large form monstrea variegata 🙈 And then your new favorite hand “shovel” - I found a smaller one, in the kids section at our local garden center, and it’s perfect for repotting 🤩👌🏼

Eradicating fungus gnats takes multiple methods at the same time. Use the sticky traps, use mosquito bits, and bottom water so the top layer of soil is never wet. For plants in no drainage that can't be bottom watered, use moss, leca, rocks, or sand on top. If your consistent with all 3 steps for a few weeks it is effective. You need the traps to catch the adults, the bits to kill the larvae, and the dry top layer to deter them from laying more eggs. It takes awhile but it works.

As to the plants I am enjoying using this recipe of tree fern, perlite and soil that you and Alice use. It has helped my anthuriums so much. Enjoyed this video so much. Dealing with fungus gnats myself. The sticky traps i hate seeing them with my plants but is the only way catching them. And i change them when they start to look ugly. Thank you for answering that any substrates you use you still get them. I find citronella helps with flying pests the scent. They hate smoke in the air so i am using alot of incense. I totally agree neem oil stinks and any insecticide sprays so i mix lemon dish washing liquid with it so is not so strong. Also there are some scents that insects dislikes. Some people put sand on top of there soil and decorative stones or clay balls on top of there substrates helps to prevent pests lay eggs inside the soil.

My “plant room” is also my office so I am working in there 8-9 hours a day and I burn incense a lot because it is calming for me….and no issues with gnats in there. Gnats are a problem in the rest of my house where there are only plants here and there. I use mosquito bits tea and some sticky traps for those….but there is definitely something about the incense burning in the plant room/office that keeps them away!

I read that since cinnamon is antifungal, and fungus is what the gnats feed on, that is why it can cut back on them. I would love a video on the products you use, and how you use them, for fertilizing, soil mixes, rooting, pest control, etc. For example, I know you mentioned in another video that silica is tricky in the order you use it with other products in water, and I would like further explanation of things like that.

dough scraper is mostly used for scraping the dough off of the surface you are working on after or during kneading! Such I good idea for cleaning up soil!!

Love these two hour vids on a rainy day 😊. I own only Hoya plants and find they love the assistance of grow lights, and leca. None are in soil. And they all thrive. I’ll admit tho. Reverting back to soil worries me. So I stick to what works best for them. I’d love to venture into antherms to

1:48:32 resident person who moves all their plants outside during the summer here 👋🏼 i definitely want to emphasize the fact that it takes transition. all my cacti and succs and hoyas that can take full sun sit next to south facing windows during the winter / cold months. i live in the US Midwest so we have a long cold season and they live there for a while, anyways the point is they still get a LOT of sun. but natural sun that isn’t hitting them through the window is literally just built different, the UV is so much stronger. even all those plants that get so much sun during the winter still need a couple weeks until i move them into full, blazing sun all day. imo most plants will grow so much better outside because the temperature fluctuation from night to day helps their rhythm and they grow well with the increased ambient light and humidity. but also take that with a grain of salt because i have a large screened porch and a tree in my backyard that really makes my outdoor setup ideal. just don’t scorch your plants y’all!

Have you tried the electric bug catcher? I've seen people swear by katchy but I bought a noname mosquito catcher (i just used the yellow sticky paper inside) for fungus gnats and it seems to work.

Question for the hoya people: I am an underwaterer. So I naturally let most of my plants dry out maybe a bit too much. However, when I let my hoya dry out, I lose all baby leaves and I end up with long tendrils with no leaves. AND they get root rot easily from the dry/wet cycle. Yet the popular opinion is what Charmaine said here. Am I doing something wrong? Also, I live in Miami so even indoors our humidity levels are higher than average.

Fungus Gnats are attracted to CO2, while Plants produce O2 during photosynthesis they also breathe like we do, CO2 diffuses out in the process. The gnats aim for this CO2 to find the plants, but they get attracted by our breath as well.

I tried mozzie bit tea for months and it would reduce the number of gnats but it never competely got rid of them and it was SO much work to brew it up. I found a liquid form of BTI called Tanlin CX drops and it was not cheap but it wiped the gnats out completely in about a month. I just put a drop in 2L of water and then added my nutrients as usual. I stopped using it when I released stratiolaelaps mites into my pots instead and they have also been amazing. I don't know if you can get Tanlin drops in Canada, but you might be able to find an equivalent. If not, stratiolaelaps mites are brilliant for not only fungus gnat prevention but they also eat thrips larvae and spider mites diapausing in the soil. They live for ages, too. Even if they run out of bugs to eat, they can survive on decaying organic matter. I don't recommend using hydrogen peroxide for gnat control because it kills the beneficial bacteria in your soil as well as the gnat larvae.

My only experience using tobacco was that the greenhouse I worked at in high school used smoke bombs to get rid of almost everything. It actually worked well on thrips, aphids, and fungus gnats, but it was something that you light and leave the premises, so I've never thought to look at other applications!

You can try making a DIy Version of the gardening trowel by cutting a water bottle on an angle, the opening/ Part of it can be sort of the handle side. At least temporarily until you find a metal one you like

I lost my P lynamii so i understand the gigas mystery. Mostly when i lose plants, i find them in my prop boxes but this one is just gone and it wasnt small either.

Dealing with fungus gnats too. I was going heavy with mosquito bits tea/dunks but wasn't working. I found a plant that I recently upotted slowly rotting and so the soil was super wet. The gnats that were coming out of this plant wss next level 🤢🤢🤢😳. I quickly put it outside. Another plant that was staying too moist was another contributor even tho it was getting treated. Finally I did a diluted hydrogen peroxide spray to the top 2 inches of the soil. Seems to have done the trick.

I highly recommend drosera plants for fungus gnats, particularly those with longer stems that stick out. Drosera capensis, nidiformis or intermedia for instance. I had a couple of those in my cabinet and within a day I couldn’t see any more gnats. And neem oil is actually much more effective as a soil drench. There is solid research on it and aziradactin is taken up by the roots and works as a systemic when used regularly, so it can be used as a preventative measure and treatment ☺️ I agree, the smell is awful! And a mask should be worn when using it, because even though it’s natural, it doesn’t mean that it’s safe.

more light brings more variegation but only if it actually gets to the part of the plant that's growing. It's has a direct effect on growing cells. So if the plant is very bushy and only the leaves get the light it will not matter at all. With alocasias it's hard as the stem is so tight but I did get a half-moon on my black stem alocasia that was almost reverted after shining a very strong directed growth light on the crown. I do recommend it as a treatment to increase variegation if needed. As for vining plants I've seen the thickness of the stripe get literally wider and narrower depending on the intensity of the light hitting the stem. But I still have no idea how to manipulate the non-chmieric plants. My ilsemanii is growing almost all white and I've tried so many things to bring more green, no success so far... anyone has any ideas...?

Would spraying alcohol on plants work for spider mites & thrips? I know it works for mealies.

I’ve actually used alcohol spray for spider mites but I found it left some marks on my newer / emergent leaves, so I’ve only been doing it with my Hoyas since they have no reaction to it!

People who don't like tissue culture are either smaller sellers or people who blame the death of their plant on being tc. Meanwhile, like you said, over 80% off the market is tc.

How can your pon dry out? Don't you keep your plants in pon in a water resevoir? Especially when they're in glass with no drainage.. There must be water at the bottom.

Fungus gnats omg number 1 enemy, but I have won this battle, I have over 300 house plants so it was a major problem, my solution was mosquito bits, much like the mosquito dunks you can make a tea, but I don't, I actually sprinkle the bits directly on top of the plants soil and every time I water after that they get treated, I only had to do this once and that was over a year ago and I haven't had a problem since,but if those suckers decide to return I'm armed a dangerous with my box of mosquito bites lol ready and waiting

I come from family of smokers and yes, my mom always collected butts, soaked them, and sprayed garden plants against aphids. It does work :) nicotine is a pesticide. Actually imidacloprid (the chemical in systemics) is a derivative of nicotine. But I can't use that as a pest treatment, if I buy cigarettes to treat pests I would just smoke them... oh well. btw bonide killed all my fungus gnats, I know you're avoiding it due to mites but if you get too annoyed and willing to risk it, it does work. Probably nicotine would work too.

I only water with mosquito dunk water, I fill 2 litre bottles with 1/2 a dunk per week & just keep refilling them & steeping overnight, I have 3 bottles. 99% gone for months-plants fine getting only this water. X

@unplantparenthood I would definitely do some research on the tobacco thing. In most nurseries I’ve been to they have signs😮 no tobacco products allowed. I asked one time and they said there was some type of virus or something that comes from tobacco. It can wipe out the whole greenhouse if contracted. I want to say it was a type of blight but don’t quote me on that.

If you were going to do the tobacco trick, you’d want actual raw tobacco, not from a cigarette, because those chemicals would still leach into your plants. You could buy tobacco seeds and grow the plant, but I wouldn’t use cigarettes for it 😅

The leca looks to be pre washed. It’s not dusty like other leca.

I don't own any hoya but I do own dischidia (a non-variegated ruscifolia). If you don't rely on the taco test, how do you tell when they need water?

All of my hoya and dischidia actually begin to wrinkle and I can just tell visually they’re thirsty!
