This is NOT a Tutorial... nor is it my favorite part of a Guitar build.
Mistakes were made and overcome trying to do a high gloss rattle can guitar finish.
In this video I go through my attempt(s) in doing a high gloss guitar finish using stains and rattle cans.
I probably made every mistake in the book and had to start over several times and almost gave up and trashed the guitar.
However, in the end I persevered and ended up with a very decent glossy finish and new found knowledge about finishing a guitar.
Disclaimer:
- My frustration does show in the overall quality of this video, but I didn't want to hide it because problems and frustration are also a big part of guitar making. -

Fabulous effort, I love the Westone brand and have had sooo many over the years, and this is a beautiful tribute to the x390, congrats! I was praying you didn't burn through with that polisher, especially when I see you not using water with the compound 😮 A great tip for keeping the orange peel to a minimum when applying from rattle cans is... while you're warming the can, take a hairdryer to the body immediately before spraying to raise the temperature of your project slightly, a warm spray onto a colder base enhances orangepeel ;)

Building a guitar is one thing. However, finishing is an art of its own and you can only perfect it by making mistakes. Great work and a beautiful looking instrument.

This was one of your BEST videos! You are one of the most detailed and patient people on KZfaq. To see you be challenged but succeed was so much fun to watch. I was cheering you on the time. I watch videos rom alot of builders and I always say to myself- Come on, there is no way you did this so perfectly and so easy with no problems. Great to see real reality "TV"

I only recently found you on KZfaq and started watching your videos within the last few months. I truly appreciate you sharing your frustrations/insecurities/mistakes in this video. So often people only show their very best work and everything going "right". We all know practice makes perfect and "failing upwards" is how we grow. However, our culture tends to prefer perfection over reality. From magazines, to Instagram, to youtube - it's everywhere. By adding that human element into your video, you inspire people like me who are still cutting their teeth to keep at it until I am truly satisfied with my work. On top of that, the end result was AMAZING and I hope to do something similar at some point. Thank you very much for sharing your progress, and I can't wait to see the final result!

This video will be more useful than any other simply demonstrating the steps. Thanks to you, anyone will understand that finishing a guitar is not a quick and easy job. They will know that frustration is a normal step in the process, and that they shouldn't give up! Time and patience is key, I learnt it the hard way as well :) That finish looks perfect to me btw ;)

It's unusual to see you looking apprehensive. When we've seen you doing incredibly detailed and complex inlays like they were a walk in the park. I hope you enjoyed building this model, because I wouldn't be surprised if people reach out to you to build more. It looks like an absolutely first class instrument, the way it shines and catches the light reminds me of polished stone.

I felt so bad when you did the first take and then started over...you put in so much effort and time up until that point and when it didn't turn out like you wanted I could tell you were just crestfallen. I'm so happy for you that you turned around and just pushed through till the end and you came out with that spectacular finish. Congrats 👏 All your hard work and diligence payed off! When you're spraying clear over a color, there's really no need to do much sanding at all. Just level it a bit with 1500 grit, and spray they clear right over it, and then sand the clear level. This will prevent you from sanding through the color and having to redo it....also I wouldn't recommend wet sanding a color coat. It can cause moisture to get into the wood, and raise the grain....also if you like that 1k clear in a can, try out the 2k. It dries incredibly fast because it contains a catalyst.

Hi BennyG, Thank you very much. Yes, I had to find out how much polish to use. Too little and there is a chance of burning through the finish. And to much and the compound spray is all over the shop.

I spray painted for 3 years professionally. Wet sanding is fine, I've refinished a few strats and always wet sanded with around 1200, then soft pads at 2000, then buffing compounds for a finish that was flawless.
@EntropiaGuitars
@EntropiaGuitars Жыл бұрын
FYI, it's temperature that may burn through the finish. While it may not be practical in your workshop, I would only polish with water and the compound. The key to keeping burns away is appropriate speed, water and taking it easy on hard edges like cavities, or on the sides. Start off with a cutting compound with a hard pad, work your way up to a glaze compound and a super soft pad.

Your spray passes should ALWAYS start with a dust coat; the purpose of the dusting coat is to dry a little and then provide more for the coat to grab onto. From one coat to the next, ALWAYS alternate horizontal then vertical passes. The following coat with then be horizontal again and so it continues to alternate every other coat. The purpose of alternating the direction of the coat passes (strokes) is weaving the paint layers fir strength; it is similar to construction with composite layers, alternating horizontal (strokes) layer followed by a vertical layer; this is also good for leveling. Your sprayer needs to have rotating nozzle or the work item must itself be rotated 90° instead of changing the plane of stroke.

I get it. I agonize over the finish as well. I'm still not happy with my GGBO build. It ended up much more green than I wanted. But I didn't have time to sand it off and redo it. But in the end you got there. As we say in Texas, it's shining like a diamond in a goat's ass.

As long as you wait a couple days to let water dry out wet sanding works well and has been done for decades. Your handicap is using a rattle can ,but its a slo process either way and is looking great.

Pro tip: Apply a Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner (Minwax is the most popular brand) to avoid splotching. P.S. Make sure you match an oil-based conditioner with oil-based stains and a water-based conditioner with water-based stains.
