The killing of Nigeria's head of state, Major General Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi, and Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi in the July 1966 Counter Coup represents one of the darkest chapters in the nation's history. The coup and its aftermath had far-reaching consequences, deepening ethnic divisions and leading to a brutal civil war. As Nigeria continues to grapple with its past and strive for a brighter future, it is crucial to remember the events of 29 July 1966 as a reminder of the devastating consequences of political instability and the importance of building a united and inclusive nation.

These stories are uncoordinated. According to the ADC to Ironsi, they were put in a land Rover and driven to Iwo road or so, where a Captain asked him and a few others to enter the Land Rover and detain the two officers. It was the NCO's that shot him.

Fajuyi was a target of the coupists from get-go because his adherence to Awo's political ideology wasnt hidden. So the fact that Nzeogwu on his broadcast had expressed their intention to release Awo from prison and install him as the prime minister made Fajuyi a suspect. Besides, by the time the revenge coup was carried out the northern soldiers didn't trust any south officer as it wasn't clear who the January 6 ploters were apart from the ones being detained. For yet another thing, the January cuop was widely welcomed in the western region as it brought a respite to the political upheaval that bedeviled the western region. So, it's untrue that the government House Ibadan assailants were there to pick up Ironsi only, and that Fajuyi volunteered to follow them for fear that he mighty be accused of betraying Ironsi. He never was given that choice at all. And he couldn't have been able to escape even if he had attempted to.

The coup favored the West than the East. The transfer of power from Zik to Micheal Okpara was peaceful but the transfer of power from Awolowo to Akintola was marred by conflicts, power strong and control of coca-cola distributorship. This conflict led to the death of each of their first child. The conflict led to “operation wetie” and also the imprisonment of Awolowo. Many people are blind to history and facts in Nigeria

Thank you Edmund Obilor. I disagree with the position by the interviewee that Major Nzeogwu was mentored by Sir Ahmadu Bello. All the accounts on Nzeogwu I've read from Obasanjo, to Adewale Ademoyega, to Ben Gbulie, to Peter Nzeogwu to Madiebo whom I also had the rare privilege of discussing this subject debunked any prior links of Major Nzeogwu and Sir Ahmadu Bello. Why are these clowns talking like Aguiyi Ironsi did not even deserve more than what he got? If there was no coup, the foolish man called Obasanjo will not bring Federalism on board. Aguiyi Ironsi is the worst Leader in Nigeria history or i can give you OBJ. In Murtala case, he never touched the essence of Nigeria, infact Murtala is the best ruler Nigeria has ever had. When he was killed, it was not only his tribe that mourned him, the Hausa, Yoruba, some South South states e.g the then Bendel states mourned him. They came on the streets of Nigeria to mourn him. @@NonsoOkoye-pe4rfexactly, Awolowo and Akintola conflict and tussle for power led to “operation wetie” and the coup. Ironsi knew about the Jan coup so also most Igbos political leaders especially Zik. Unfortunately Ironsi became upset and had to organize a suppression of that coup for breech of understanding he had with the Coupist not to shed blood as we was made to believe. It was never an Igbo coup in planning but became an Ignorant coup in execution. Of all the victims that were murdered only Akintola resisted arrest. Their actions that night plunged this country which effect reverberates till date.

Zik was not in the country for three months before the coup happened, the West was at war, Awolowo and Akintola was at war which led to the death of Awolowo first child in a fake car accident in 1963 and retaliatory killing of Akintola first child by drug overdose in 1965. Akintola conspired with Belewa to imprison Awolowo. The military intervened to get rid of the corrupt politicians destroying the country. The East had peace, Micheal Okpara was delivering and performing amazingly and fortunately for him on the day of the coup he had a British bishop visiting at his home, so the Bishop knew about the coup?
