15 and learning to speak: Imagine living without being able to communicate with anyone around you. That's the reality for many deaf people living in the developing world who've never been taught sign language. Kiki King went to rural Uganda in 2014 to meet some of the countries most isolated children and the people helping them find their voice for the first time. This episode first aired on 21/11/2014.

It wasn't a single person. There are many different sign languages and they each have a different history. They develop naturally any time enough deaf people are together. E.g. some sign languages actually started in schools for the deaf where there were no teachers that knew any kind of sign language. They would try to teach deaf kids to speak or to read and write or to do trades, but the deaf kids spent so much time together they started sharing their own gestures and eventually everyone in the school was using them and younger kids would learn them from older kids when they started school. Other sign languages evolved when there was a community that had a very high percentage of deaf people. It's like spoken languages though in that no one really 'invents' a language usually. It's just something that happens when humans spend time together.

There used to be a video in YT edited to include only the Patrick parts, plus a clip where he signed (very clumsily and with narrow vocabulary, though, as he had been in the Sign Language course only for couple of days yet) that he wants to become a teacher when he grows up so he can teach deaf children

His skin is just so flawlessly beautiful!! I cannot stop looking at him how beautiful he is.. After seeing his first smile, my heart just opened even wider... I would LOVE to learn sign language.. Really thought about teaching myself.. After watching this, I'm definitely going to do it... This is why I want my husband to win the lottery.. He plays those ones with the numbers.. I don't care about living a life of luxury or carrying around a damn Prada.. I just want to help.. I just want to help so many people because I would just take their suffering so that they didn't have too! I've always been this way, my husband says that's what he loves so much about me but, I get so frustrated because I really can't do anything because MONEY is EVERYTHING!!!
@BriannaTerese
@BriannaTerese 5 жыл бұрын
Swnsasy _ you could always run a fundraiser. Name something you’re good at. Hold an event to teach people what you’re good at or have a “ladies night” doing something you enjoy. Donate the proceeds to a legitimate non-profit organization that gives money to these kids for education.
@BriannaTerese
@BriannaTerese 5 жыл бұрын
Or as an alternative (idk how finances work in your household lol) you could tell your husband that for a year, instead of buying lottery tickets (like if he bought one every day on his lunch break), instead put that money into a donation jar. You could do that to. Like instead of buying your favorite soda everyday or something, put that money into the donation jar instead. 💁🏽‍♀️ Just some ideas! Every single penny counts. I think people get overwhelmed by the idea of charity and feeling inadequate to these rich people who write a $50,000 check. We all cant do that and it’s okay. And if money is still that tight, you could always reach out to the organizations to ask how you can help if you can’t give financially!
@BriannaTerese
@BriannaTerese 5 жыл бұрын
Oh also you can write off donations on your taxes too. That shouldn’t be an incentive but it helps for some lol.

There everyone gets very good care of but still I think everyone in Uganda has the same level of stunning points just as these kids and teachers in Sweden.

im so emotional.. from the sadness of them living all those years no communication and now smiles and signing away :) i love this. our world needs to come together no matter the country we live in and culture and be there for each other. every deaf person where ever they live deserves to learn to communicate and express themselves. Ty all of you are angels and ty for reporting on this

I work at a Chipotle and a deaf man came in and ordered food today. Luckily (for the people who can’t sign- including me), he could point at what he wanted for most of his order, and I somehow understood that he wanted chips and queso? I’m the cashier, so you ask them for chips, drinks, sides, etc.The chips were easy, but It took a little longer for the queso. He wanted something to dip the chips in, and I only understood that he wanted queso when I saw him mouth “cheese”. I told my co worker to get queso, but she still pointed at the guac, and both the man and I shook our heads. He got his order and thanked us, we apologized to him, and he gave us a thumbs up. I downloaded an ASL app when I got home.

I cry every time I see this. Not just because of Patrick's transformation from a boy who was lost and trapped inside his own head, who was sad and defeated, to a boy whose face lights up with happiness and excitement and renewed hope where before there had been none. But for ALL of these students who not only gained the ability to communicate, who finally got a voice, but they also gained a community of people they could talk to and people like them who could understand each other. None of them had probably ever met someone else who was like them. Before this, Patrick and the other students were effectively alone in the world, and with gaining a voice and a community and being given, really for the first time, a name, they were no longer alone, shut off from everyone around them, they were a part of something.

No it doesn't. It has auto-generated captions which are buggy and weirdly timed. A show coming from Channel 4 should have the budget to add subtitles to its youtube uploads.

This channel is one of the best channels I've discovered on KZfaq. The documentaries are well made. You get to discover parts of the world that's rarely talked about in mainstream US news on a micro level. I was a little shocked it only has 133,000 subscribers. I think it should be 10 times that number. Loved this documentary. Keep up the great work.

Arie Fraiser this Channel is reposting things from a big U.K. TV station (channel 4). That is why it is high end and low followings. This station is the best of the U.K. imo.

My son is blind and has learning problems including autism which contributed to him being non verbal (he mumbles and make noises) but has no communication skills or understanding of what we are saying to him, which is really hard and frustrating for him. but seeing this boy who actually has the normal intelligence and abilities of your average person is very sad indeed. Knowing they'd (his caretakers/parents etc) would of been able to teach him is actually awful and just sad. His whole life not being able to translate or talk to anyone nor explain how he feels or what he needs etc I can't begin to imagine how hard that would be for him.
