Originally scheduled for Two Harbors. Somewhere along the line they changed to Duluth! Great for us! Their First arrival this new year! Coming into Port @ 12:32 PM Sailed up river, have video of this as well, without tug assistance. That V-bow really does slice through the ice better than the bull nose ships! I just about guarantee if it was a bull nose, they would have had tug assistance along the way.
All the info today, it seems most people do not know how to read beyond the Title, decided to check and see if anyone misses the info. If not, it will save a lot of my time not worrying about it!

Of all the freighters this truly deserves to be a floating museum once she can't haul anymore, not only because of the Edmund Fitzgerald partnership obviously, but considering it's served for 70 years.

Hi Paul. In answer to your question re the information, a suggestion. Do a full write up with each first arrival next season, and subsequent arrivals add a link so that you don't have write each time, unless you have something new to add. Not all of the information will be understood by those not in the know, like me, but is interesting anyway. The history of some ships is really interesting, such as change of owners, names, etc. and reflects the changing working environment of the lakes. Thanks for all the effort you put into recording and sharing the life of the lakes. 😀😀👍👍🇬🇧

It was incredibly brave for them to go back out. The seas were insane that day, and Capt. Bernie Cooper was understandably reluctant when the Coast Guard asked him to go back out and search. They left the decision entirely up to him, and I tend to believe he decided he'd never forgive himself if he didn't at least try. Cooper to Coast Guard: "Well, I’ll go back and take a look, but God, I’m afraid I’m going to take a hell of a beating out there… I’ll turn around and give ‘er a whirl, but God, I don’t know. I’ll give it a try. Do you realize what the conditions are out there?" Coast Guard: “Affirmative. From what your reports are I can appreciate the conditions. Again, though, I have to leave that decision up to you as to whether it would be hazarding your vessel or not. If you think you can safely go back up to the area, I would request that you do so. But I have to leave the decision up to you.” Cooper: “I’ll give it a try, but that’s all I can do.” The Anderson did find 2 empty lifeboats and debris, but no other sign of the Fitz or her crew.

I live in Windsor,Ontario,Canada🇨🇦 which is right across the river from Detroit for those who don’t know. My house isn’t to far from the Windsor/Detroit river & i live close to “Hiram Walkers” a.k.a. “Canadian Club Whisky”🥃 I have a bird's eye view of the river & can look straight down the river & past the “Ambassador Bridge” & watch the big ships coming in or going which is really cool & the odd time i’ll catch a big ship turning around or sideways so they can maneuver it into port to start unloading or loading at the one port that is just past the “Ambassador Bridge” on the Detroit side. + another neat thing i get to see is when a tug boat pulls up to the big ships side to deliver their mail & some guys on the ship & no word of a lie will order pizza from one of their favourite pizza joints in Detroit & the tug boat delivers it to the ship as the ship is moving lol 😂 … & sometimes the ships will drop anchor right in the middle of the river & a few times i’ve seen 3-4 ships drop anchor in the middle of the river, for what ever reason(s) i have no idea. I drank with a few of the ships crewman back in the late 90’s in Windsor at the “Rock Bottoms” bar right by the “Ambassador Bridge” & we had some good conversations & drank a few pops lol.

Both the bull nose and all quarters in the stern are compromises to minimize costs and maximize the amount of cargo that can be carried within the length, width, and depth limits of the Poe lock and still be reasonably seaworthy.

They raise the bridge a half hour before it gets there what do they use jacks and blocks to raise that bridge

LOL! Usually lift when the ship is 1.5 miles out. They have 4 motors, 2 on each side that lift and lower the bridge.

How can a ship like that arrive unscheduled? I mean, aren't they tracked?

So ships divert from their original destination often? This seems unusual. Any reason as to why the diversion?
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca Жыл бұрын
This time of the season, yes. If there is too much of a backlog at a certain dock, with time limited to get off the lake before the locks close, they will divert to a quicker "line".

Keep the info. It's great and pays another level of respect to the mariners and bridgetenders. Huge ships traveling through narrow passages doesn't get the credit it should without the info. Thx.
