I can confirm pagoda in Eikando has a great view, but the whole temple is impressive. Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is also great and there is another bamboo forest within the temple. I think Arashiyama could easily get it's own episode as the whole area is extremely pleasant with long history.

On my recent trip to Japan, I followed so many of your suggestions for Kyoto and it was wonderful. Thanks a lot for this video, it definitely helped make our trip extra special. Due to the Cherry Blossom season, the routine places were excruciatingly crowded and your off beat locations offered such a great break from the crowds.

Thank you for sharing the Google maps links. Very thoughtful. As soon as you mentioned my favorite spot at Eikan-do I knew this was a good itinerary. My other favorite thing to do is walk down the philosophers path from Eikando to Kannon-do Ginkaku 👌 it’s not long (30 min long) but somehow always takes me 2 hours to finish. Can’t help myself but to stop and admire everything.

Wouldn't be much of a useful video without the links! The Philosopher's Path does seem to make you walk slowly and take everything in, I know what you mean. Actually I walked it in the snow last year and have the video. Absolutely wonderful experience!

I'm bingeing all your videos in preparation for my first trip to Japan in mid-February. Byodo-In has long been on my list of places to visit as I grew up on Oahu right next to Valley of the Temples where there is a half-sized replica of the temple. Looking forward to seeing the original!

Hello, just wanted to say thank you for these videos and bringing light to the roads less traveled. Im hoping you can make a series of underrated gems specifically for the winter season in Japan. I figured it would go well with the theme since that seems to be Japans least crowded season.

Thanks for posting this video! I just finished watching your video on Mistakes First time in Japan. Both very helpful videos! We’re visiting Japan this early April but unfortunately we only have 3 nights in Tokyo, then head to Osaka for 2 nights then Kyoto for 2 nights then lastly back to Tokyo for another 3 nights. I would like to avoid the chaos of crowds but since our time is very short at these places in Japan, could you recommend any hidden gems at these cities that won’t take too much time to traverse in between sights? I love history and nature and can’t wait to finally visit Japan! Thanks in advance for your time and recommendations! Sincerely appreciate any help!
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 4 ай бұрын
Sure! From both of the Kyoto videos: Adashino Nenbutsu-ji / Saga Torimoto and Giou-ji are all clustered in the same part of Arashiyama. You can also go to Uji by Keihan line and stop off at Fushimi-Inari on the way back. I recommend going later in the day or evening to avoid the crowds at both. Honen-in, Eikando and Tenjuan are also near to each other. With Osaka and Tokyo there's a fair bit of travel time between places, and good luck if you want to visit there without encountering crowds. Most places I recommend are day-trips from those cities, but that's not much good on a limited time schedule.

Funnily enough I've never worn a kimono, so can't recommend anywhere. Putting "kimono rental" into google maps shows most shops are around Gion in east Kyoto, although there's at least one a short walk from the Kimono Forest in Arashiyama. See which works for your plans!

Sadly i wouldn't be able to go to the flea market next month (i'm going to nagasaki on february 24). Or maybe i could go on the other date you mention. let's check these info in the description! (Edit: they are a lot of stuff, thanks you so much for the information! : ) Also i'm planning to visit the Kitano tenmangu shrine to see the Plum blossom garden of february. I think it will not be as awesome as an hanami but it seem worth a visit . Side question: Hanami is only used for sakura or can it be used for plum as well ? Thanks you for the very informative video as always!
