I'm looking to do a day trip there (don't think there's enough time unfortunately to do an overnight stay - schedule's pretty packed, maybe on a future trip where I return there), but will take your tips on board, thanks Andrew.

I can confirm pagoda in Eikando has a great view, but the whole temple is impressive. Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is also great and there is another bamboo forest within the temple. I think Arashiyama could easily get it's own episode as the whole area is extremely pleasant with long history.

Wow Andrew another exceptionally informative Japan travel video to a special location ... the bike rental option between the two ropeways on each side of the peninsula is a great low-cost very pleasurable option, recommended ... Take the bus (or ebike) to Ine bay it's a fantastic destination and a 'must do' in the area ... Book an overnight stay in a Funaya (boat house) in Ine to experience the real feel of this unique area, or at least take the bay boat trip ... There are FREE use bicycles at the bus stop in Ine, don't overlook them like we did and wished we had known prior ... Andrew's bento from the supermarket is a SUPER tip 👍 ... No matter which options you go with just get to this area, it will remain as one of your best experiences in Japan. I have had it in my mind to return to and make it a multiple day stay.

Now I yearn to visit Amanohashidate......

I completely agree that we need to rethink preconceived notions about the best time to visit Japan. When it comes to Tokyo, there are two periods to avoid at all costs for me : the cherry blossom season and the period from July 15 to September 15. Focusing a trip solely around cherry blossoms is very risky, as we don't know exactly when they will bloom. For example, this year there was a three-week delay, and I felt sorry for the travelers who paid exorbitant hotel prices and saw nothing. As for summer in Tokyo, it's getting worse and worse. Last summer was awful. Indeed, during that time, one can go to the northern regions, but recently, even in Hokkaido, it can be very hot, with frequent temperatures above 35°C. For me, the best time to visit is indeed the end of the year, especially in Tokyo with the Christmas illuminations. Plus, the weather is guaranteed to be 100% good. June is fine as well.

Love your content. We’ll be in Kyoto in November, there’s a chance it’ll be during peak foliage- which isn’t the main draw for us it just happened to be when we could make the trip work. I read that tofukuji is actually super crowded during this time? Well only have 3 full days in Kyoto and it’s our first trip. we’re debating skipping kiyomizu-dera/surrounding areas for some of the less popular sights but I’ve had people say it’s a must and worth it even if crowded. Any thoughts on this? (We’re traveling with kids who usually travel well and we’ve already started training for long walks with them around our home city haha - I’m just worried if big crowds specifically in tight spaces might be overwhelming or make it difficult for them to literally see anything).

Another Great piece of information!! I'm actually gona go with the JR National for 3 weeks, because it will be roughly the same as individual tickets. Still, I prefer to have the flexibility to change plans if needed anyway. 😊

Klook doesn't work for me. I need tickets for August (when no discounts are available) and it's ¥200 more expensive per ticket than on SmartEX + additionally they charge a fulfillment fee. It may be convenient for people whose credit cards don't work in Japan, but for me it's a total waste of money.

The non-automatic captions seem to be broken, but I still greatly enjoyed the video! I've always dreamed of traveling to Japan, but as an autistic person, the sheer idea of crowds is terrifying enough to keep me home. If only there were more guides on traveling while disabled 😅

Thanks for the great advice. Is there a limit on the number of days your basic fare ticket is valid for? I want to go from Tokyo to Kyoto then Hiroshima via Himeji over 12 days then back to Tokyo. I tried the JR rail pass calculator and it's cheaper without the 14 day pass. Thank you.

Any suggestions for the golden route? Tokyo to Kyoto to Osaka? Does any regional passes covers the shinkasen between those cities?

Good advice for the cost conscious but for me I wanted worry free travel with as much planning and booking before my trip as possible. That meant Smart EX paired with virtual SUICA booked from home before I left for my trip. I arrived at my station, beeped my phone in and got on my train No standing in line with the other confused Americans trying to figure out how to buy tickets. I also didn't buy any JR passes and just did SUICA the whole time. This let me concentrate on enjoying my stay instead of babysitting a paper ticket and feeling pressure to spend more time planning JR train use rather than just getting to where I wanted to go. Yes, it was probably a bit more money, but time is money and I wanted to enjoy as much of it as possible on my trip without distraction. Enjoy the channel!

Hi Andrew,I am visiting Japan with my son for the first this October. I contacted another you tuber who lives there and was criticised for booking a hotel in Kyoto and was told it's cheaper to stay in Osaka. Well we want to stay inn Kyoto and despite booking early I found cheap accommodation in Kyoto. It's not like we're going to sit in the hotel all day! We booked a hotel close to the centre for £405 for 5 nights including breakfast. I think this is pretty reasonable. I agree with what you say about too many people saying don't go here and there but a couple of other good you tubers like yourself have really helped us with really good advice which has helped us plan our itinerary. As we're on a budget we have 5 nights in Tokyo for about £500 and two nights in a capsule hotel in Hiroshima for £60. Thanks for the great videos and advice. The planning ahead makes things so easy and removes a lot of hassle.😊
