Pundits deffo feeling the heat from their England team criticism of the last game. Yesterday they did a 180 from criticising virtually everything to being subjectively overt cheerleaders, lol. The pens were great ( for once!) but our lack of penetration (with Kane not remotely in position for the in box chances created). For sure our players are better than the tactics Safegate employs - that's where the manager has serious luck.

I dont care how we did it, 3 semis in 4 tournament is amazing. I remember the feeling after each and every every embarrassing cup performance in my lifetime- the whole country would agree that the whole structure of the FA and the men's team needed to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch. Every time, it felt not only thay we failed, but that there was no end in sight. Our performances haven't been fantastic this tournament, its fair to say, but for the first time it feels like the number 1 job of the next England manager will be to maintain, build on and progress the work done by the last guy- not to throw the whole lot out on day 1. Southgate isnt the most talented manager in the world, but he's taken the team to a point where, when he hands it to the next guy, he can be proud of what he's handing over.

@@User.adymitch OK, fine, so by that standard Southgate hasn't succeeded. @samgregory7266
@samgregory7266 8 күн бұрын
I completely agree with you. I think Southgate is getting unfairly treated, I'd agree he ain't the most talented manager out there but he's done far more than be just a manager for this England team. And you might even argue it's the philosophy behind the scenes that has been his most important achievement of all.
@samwiseshanti
@samwiseshanti 8 күн бұрын
@@samgregory7266 I think your last point is exactly right. Unfortunately for him, it's not realy possible to quantify, and even worse, it's kind of a cursed achievement because for many young people, they won't remember what it was like before Southgate, and so they can't really appreciate the change in the overall attitude. I actually think Slovakia was a great example- I mean, England play a low-ranked team, go behind, and come into the closing stages of the game behind. We know how this this story goes- the fans get on their backs, the manager throws on attacking players, the players freeze up and spend the last 15 minutes launching crosses into the box to no success, and England go out of the tournament. Just to bring the national team's mentality to the point where they can stay calm and focused, and get a late equaliser, is a huge, huge step forward. I know its borderline embarrassing because it shouldn't be that big a deal, for a professional player to act like a professional for a full 90 minutes, but the undeniable truth is that we didn't have it in us until now.

Southgate is the consumate organiser and his work ethic is exemplary, but his game management is atrocious. He surrenders the initiative and fails to see the clearly shifting momentum until it is too late. Probably, like me, millions of England fans were screaming at the tv for him to make changes ten minutes before Switzerland inevitably scored. Like many middle of the road managers he lacks spontaneity, vision and courage. He obviously has the pieces of paper and knows the coaching theory but in practice he is not an elite level coach in terms of game management.

The PR behind this Declan Rice is INSANE!!!. England's problem is staring them in the face and no-one wants to recognise it. If it was Rodri, Fabinho even Wharton playing for England in Rice's place you'd see a different much more fluid team team!! Ever since he came into the England midfield and became a regular, the midfield it been static and stiff with no playing through the thirds. One can clearly see that this guy was developed as a CB coz he lacks basics of a modern 6. -He stays hidden behind defenders & can''t open for the ball in build-up, -No passing range, -Cant take the ball on the backfoot and play on the half turn to get forward ball -During buildup he stays in Midfied even when its congested, he doesn't understand when to drop in between the CB's to push the WB's up -When he does get the ball with back facing to goal hes either gonna pass it back to a defender or pass it sideways, no forward pass to speak of Arteta is smart and realised that RIce is no 6 but he had already spent 100mil+ on him so he obviously couldn't bench him. So he decided put a decent but natural 6 in Jorginho there and moved rice to play a box to box 8 where he could use his energy. Ask yourself a question If he was world class in that position why would Arteta move him and put a player that that isnt world class? Imagine Rodri or Busquets being moved to accommodate someone???

As soon as England made their substitutions Switzerland focused on the left hand side and switched off for a second and Saka with his brilliance took his chance. Not true that this is first time England scored 5/5 in a penalty shootout in a major tournament - they scored the first 5 v Germany in 1996. It was Southgate who missed the 6th because Bryan Robson only practiced with 5 penalty takers to his eternal regret and Southgate had only taken one before and missed it.

Gary makes a great point here. When teams win games in the PL whilst not on great form, we say "that's what championship-winning teams do, they grind out results when they're not playing well". Yet somehow, when looking at international tournaments, it's never enough- there's always complaints if we're not playing fluid football and blowing teams away.

All of the pundits criticising England; Shearer, Lineker, Ferdinand etc. NONE of those guys achieved anything with England. Italia 90 - we got to the semi after squeezing past Belgium, and Cameroon. England have not played anywhere near their capabilities, but they’re getting further - 4 tournaments in a row now - than ANY of those pundits did. I think that needs to be remembered.

Kane's a CF. He just needs one good all into the box and he has a good chance of scoring. Saka needs to take some blame for the useless balls he tried to put into the box, they weren't going to worry anyone. It looks great beating the defender, but what's the point in beating his man, if he can't cross the ball? Teaching Saka how to cross the ball, isn't an easy fix. What is an easy fix, is to stop booting goal kicks away, and don't have our corners going back to the keeper, especially as he will boot the ball to the other team. These things can be fixed right now.

Harry Kane simply doesn’t fit this system of play, he puts in immense work defensively for an attacking player but he isn’t helping us in the attacking third. Toney & Watkins would be an interesting alternative for the Dutch game which will be a true test. Turkey exposed VVD & Aké are very exposed to pacey attackers, sticking with Kane is giving them a day off almost. I’m keeping the faith though for tactical changes.

It always baffled me that Hoddle said when he was the manager "we dont practise pens because you can't recreate the pressure" . very odd because in the end the muscle memory CAN be replicated in any circumstance if its practised often enough and if the players have the right mindset.
