First off an apology for two errors. Apparently Silesia is part of Poland and Czechoslovakia is now the Czech Republic. Geography never was my subject. And another apology for stating that the image at 10.41 is by Harold Jones, when in fact it is by the very talented Ian Beck.
Another 4 illustrators for the collection, in the form of:
Alexandre de Riquer, Adolf Münzer, Ernest Hamlin Baker and Harold Jones.

I normally don't comment on videos that much but I have to write because this channel is so good. The narration, images and documentation create a enjoyable experience to listen and get inspired to, so much in fact that I started keeping up a list of artists that have been feature here and that have taken my attention to study them more in deep. As a young artist learning to draw many of the people here and their stories motivates me and give me someone to look up to, even if their artstyle is not of my taste the way you narrate their strugglers and life keeps me watching until the end. For all of that I want to congratulate you Mr. Pete for all your hard work.

Those primary and secondary vivid colours in one or two of the de Riquer are particularly appealing. But the Harold Jones book illustrations remind me of the time following the war when I was allowed to return to my home by the sea, where books from before the war were on shelves for lending out as my parents tried to recover some financial viability. But that's another story. I liked the Harold Jones drawings as I began to learn how to be an artist.
@petebeard
@petebeard 3 жыл бұрын
Hello again and thanks for your continued support for the channel. I had been quite familiar with Harold Jones' work for several decades but I must admit it didn't mean much to me, and neither did that of many of his British contemporaries. My obsession with cartoon illustration led to a bad case of tunnel vision. But since retirement he and others of a similar stylistic persuasion have come to be a source of real delight.
@michaels7889
@michaels7889 3 жыл бұрын
@@petebeard Sadly tunnel vision seems to have been a major feature anyway of design education through the '50's, though I think you were a bit after that. For me it was Bauhaus or else and though I frequently experimented with Finnish and pre Bauhaus north German ideas it was not until my final thesis that I was able to stage a major revolt. It didn't go down well but had to be accepted. Throughout it was the delightful illustrations that I had encountered rather at the end of childhood in those children's books together with the extremely beautiful landscapes by which I was surrounded after the war that gave a firm base for personal aesthetic sensibilities. Through those I was able to avoid total indoctrination because they enabled me to put into the subsidiary work of illustration and painting (not really subsidiary for me) something less formulated. The problems of minor tertiary establishments of the times! Your videos are not nostalgia though. They are revitalising Pete.

I loved the last three illustrators, the portraits by Baker were great and I see how they radically re-defined his career, but I prefer his earlier scene based stuff, these artists always seem to go into traditional painting at some point but I find that the commercial stuff is more interesting to my eyes. The last featured illustrator Jones, his work looks ageless, that look could still work today. The Spanish artist was accomplished, but for me I wasn't taken by his output, just a taste thing.

Amazing 9:31 A woman I knew met Montgomery right after the war when he did a photo op at a medical facility for children including a mural she painted on site. Turned out the large brief he carried seen in photos was actually a scrap book of newspaper clippings about himself. Reading the comments seems there are as many people who go to sleep with ... your videos as there are who wake up with them. *Thanks* for another very good video.
