Another in the series, and this one features another 4 fairly diverse illustrators from 4 different countries. They are:
Sidney Sime, Ferdinand von Řezníček, René Giffey and Cyrus Leroy Baldridge.

I so love these Unsung videos. I'm a big Sime fan, his monochromes were classic in the Beardsley tradition. I visited Santa Fe a few times and Baldridge is featured in several local galleries and museums as part of the O'Keefe school of American desert illustration. Santa Fe is worth a visit, but bring lots of money! Thanks Pete for another fine video. I wish the rest of YT was up to your standards.

Before your fantastic series I never knew the real width and depth of the Western illustration. It is an unbelievable journey for me, and I guess the great reference point for the younger illustrators. I use your series as such when talking with my children and children's friends -- to show them what they, in a sense, are destined to compete with -- or, from the other point of view, what they are able to borrow from. Thank you very much, and please do not stop. :)

I am a great admirer of your videos and was pleased to see Mr Baldridge among your subjects. Cyrus Leroy Baldridge has been a secret favorite of mine for many years (secret because nobody else seemed to have heard about him) since I found a copy of his 1947 illustrated autobiography "Time and Chance." It's a must-read for anyone interested in classic American illustration. Baldrige was an excellent writer. His description of the life of the newspaper sketch artist in pre-photography days has stuck with me all these years. The story of his globe-trotting life with Caroline Singer is a treat to read. Baldridge was quite open-minded for his time and his travelogue is free from the pettiness and prejudice so common in old-time travel books. On top of all this is an unforgettable gallery of illustrations and sketches.

Another great foursome from the heyday of illustration! Well done, Pete. I can well imagine the Manchester-born Sidney Sime is a favorite of yours. Today's internet is dripping with illustrations of all kinds, but those glorious illustrated magazines and books of the past can still hold their own. You seem to have perfected the presentation of these artists, with the combination of examples of their work, the spoken commentary and the tasteful background music (which stays in the background!). You have earned the praise most commentators offer.

Hi Pete, I've just had the pleasure of discovering your channel - came accross it in my research on old advertising mat books of stock illustrations, but alas, your focus is more on an earlier time period. I'm impressed with your breadth of knowledge, and calm and easy presentation style - not to mention your prodigious output! If I may offer one piece of advice - your audio recordings seem to have an intermittent, high frequency buzzing sound. It's likely someone may have brought this up before - but as hearing loss affects high frequencies as we advance in age, it's quite possible that you are unable to hear it - I can hear it distinctly, but people who are younger would find it even more distracting. It's a shame since it detracts from your otherwise excellent voiceover. This can easily be remedied with free software like Audacity. Knowing that KZfaq often filters comments with links, instead of linking you to a tutorial, if you search for "removing high pitched whine using audacity" the top result is a very straightforward tutorial. I only share this with you encourage you to make your videos even more appealing and accesible to reach an even broader audience. I wish you all luck and success with this very admirable project to shine a light on the under appreciated artists of our past. Many thanks, Linus

Hello and thanks for your appreciation. Sorry about the noise problem. The weird thing is that the great majority of viewers just don't hear it Whether that;s due to listening on inferior kit I really don't know. @@LinusBoman I can hear it too, I was looking for a comment that referenced it. It sounds like when a mosquito is buzzing next to your ear. @@petebeard :) I categorize the pun as understated British humor, i.e. once in a studio of a painter of British descent we respectfully listened to an acquaintance writer carry on how depressed he was about his work and was thinking of buying a gun to end it all. After a long silent pause the painter asked if it wouldn't be cheaper to rent a gun ? The topic was never bought up again and the writer lived for years after (probably passed away in his house full of cats and was consequently eaten. But that's another story).

hi, thank you for your videos. I had been thinking about exploring a concept of visual essays on youtube (visual art related). I was wondering for your video subjects, do you focus on illustrators whose works are in public domain? if their works are not in public domain then is it still ok to show their works on video bc it is for educational purposes? I would like to be a museum docent one day but right now cannot. so was considering doing visual essays if an exhibit was moving. however, I was wondering if I would face copyright issues. even if it was eventually promoting the artist/museum. thank you.

Hello and thanks for the question. The key aspect of doing work such as this is in the legal phrase 'fair use'. You can look it up for greater understanding. Essentially I can show amything I like whether it's in the public domain or not, providing I don't attempt to pass it off as my own, and that I use it for the purposes of analysis, review or satire. I hope that helps.

'HM (Herbert Merrill) Wilder (1864-1915) was born and raised in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, where he was a member of the library committee for many years. His father was a blacksmith in Hinsdale, who later became a banker and Justice of the Peace. HM Wilder contributed to many of the top publications of the day. He produced work for Harper's Weekly for many years, and the magazine sent Wilder to the Paris Exposition in 1900. He was also a frequent contributor to Life and Puck, among other publications. Wilder also illustrated "The Voyage of the Rattletrap", an 1897 book written by Hayden Carruth.'
