H.J. Ward.....how much he drew in his short life....may be if -with his art - he'd made iconics americans....he would be really famous...but drawing cover novels and magazines, sadly has been forgiven....but now we have Pete Bear videos to turn to life these "unsung heroes of illustration". Fabulous, as always. Apart from the quality of these videos, the sheer quantity is astonishing - over 360 Unsung Heroes and 60 singletons. Among the few you haven't gotten around to as yet are such wonders as Joseph Clement Coll and Hal Foster. And, from my love of the Pulp magazines, such artists as J Allen St John, Edd Cartier, and Frank Kelly Freas - though I seem to recall you mentioning the latter in passing. Whatever you come up with, it will be savoured as all such delights should be.

Thank you my good sir. These have been amazing. Love always learning and viewing many new art styles is mind blowing for me. I know it may sound like I am lying but please believe me. I’ve loved art ever since I was a younger lad :,) I wish many of these talented artists got the recognition they deserve today. Without your wonderful videos I would never of known this history of art. Apologies for not taking the time on commenting much.

This is wonderful! I may have seen MacKinstry's work and I'm sure I've seen Ward's (I've seen a lot of mystery magazine covers including the Spicys!) but the other two were unfamiliar to me! Thanks again for doing these, Pete---I hope you are having as much fun as your rapt audience is!

I must have known one of your videos was due as I had just sat down with a coffee. I find it fascinating that such beautiful art can be produced with such a limited palate.

Some excellent Heroes here. "The promise of Titillation" Funny! I've always enjoyed your turn of phrase, Pete.. and though, yes; there are sometimes sad endings to recount: you infuse an obvious celebration of each Artist presented, with but subtle humour when appropriate, and besides, I always sense your delight in them, too.

While Ward's "gone too soon" is sad the work he produced is anything but! Sensationalist and eye catching, the Pulp's best combination!!

Another fine foursome, and what a range! From the innocence of MacKinstry to the slighlty-too-cynical slickness of Ward! But HOW was Verscheuren's "Hippie" overlooked in the grand era of psychedelic concert poster art?!!!

I do wish that in the far distant future, a similar narrator will inform art lovers that the revered Artist and Art Historian, Pete Beard, "lived a long, prolific and happy life."

I have viewed, with immense pleasure and gratitude, all 91 videos in this series. I echo the extremely complimentary comments by your loyal viewers. While you have proven that video is a perfect medium for your work here, I can't help but wonder if the thought of expanding your vision to include the authoring of books hasn't occurred to you.

The New York Times reported today that celebrated Hungarian-born illustrator Istvan Banyai died in December. His work was published in the New Yorker, Atlantic Magazine, New York magazine and others. You probably have profiled him - I don’t recall - but in any event he may be worth revisiting.

Mr. Beard, you are definitely spoiling us! One more wonderful video with great research and beautifull images! May I make a sugestion, though? How about videos showing golden age newspaper comics strips artists, like Roy Crane and Al Williamson? Just an idea...

at about 03:20 you say she may have added crayon. When you say crayon are you meaning like crayola or crayon as in colored pencil?

It is good to see two women illustrators (Elizabeth Mackinstry and Herry Perry) holding their own, each with a distinct style, in an art world that was dominated by men. Although many might say that the work of Charles Verschuuren is dated, I find it refreshingly original by any standard of any age. I am captivated by the man's imaginative humor in even smallest detail. Take a look at the devilish grin on the face of the crescent moon in the illustration at 4:51. The creativity involved in the anthropomorphic flies in the two advertising posters at 5:03 is truly inspiring. And I wonder what H.J. Ward would would have produced if he hadn't died so young? Those pulp covers makes one regret that that form of literature is no more, but then men would still wearing snap-brimmed fedoras and women stockings and garters, which seem to have ben a staple of that genre. Well done, Pete. Nice work.

Can one truly plagiarize themselves, or is this humor?

I know I'll get flack for this but I can't help but wonder how accepting the artworks of "pulp" illustrators would be these days if the women were instead people of color. The illustrations would certainly be justifiably deemed as mostly unacceptable to be viewed as some kind of 'artwork'. At least in the public dome. Plus the artists' skills of these images don't appear to be all that unique to the overall genre of using women as sources of titillation via violence, though some (like here) may have had more experience at composition, but eventually they all appear to be created by the same hand. It's not just boring, it's frustrating to see these artworks as something 'special' when in fact they did little else but increase the misogyny and ongoing real time permission of abuse of women that just doesn't stop. I hope you are almost rid of all of them by now, Pete. At least you added Ward at the end and so my usual second (or third) review of the video can just stop before his dull, pathetic works come up. I thank you for that small favor but I'll also ask that you please think more about including more of this kind from the standpoint of how women are still mostly exempt from today's attempts at pointing out injustices and abusive bigotry of others deemed as 'secondary' humans. If these had been stories of pure racial hatred and denigration, would you have included the artists as 'unsung'? Thanks for your consideration.
