Mr. Beard, these videos are simply magnificent! I’ve been a professional cartoonist/illustrator/artist for over 40 years, yet have never heard of many of these people. It’s such a treat to be exposed to a taste of their work. I’m excited to dig deeper into their art. I also commend you on your production....the videos are concise, informative, and your narration is fun to listen to. Your affection for all illustrators clearly comes through.

Hermann Vogel, another unknown for me, had such a fantastic style. His layouts were well thought out and the end product was nothing short of "eye candy". What beautiful inking. All I can think is the school's then were far superior. They were turning out great illustrators one after another. I had to watch a second time it was so impressive.

Hi again and pleaee restrain yourself from overdoing the videos. I like to think they're entertaining but you might get bored and I'll lose a viewer. And over on this side of the ocean the term 'professor' is reserved for only the highest level academics - and that's certainly not me. I'm deighted to say that my former students say the best thing about me was that I was an working illustrator and actually knew what I was talking about. I know in the States what we call lecturers all get called professors. Pretentious or what?

Hello and thanks a lot for the comment. Why it shoud be that the USA had so many talented representational painters, most of whom worked in oils, I have no idea. Just as a plug for the channel I'm currently working on a video devoted to the work of Parrish, which should be uploaded in a few weeks.

Thanks a lot for your coment and apprecatition. I realised some time after I'd made this video that I had squandered the opportunity to look at Wyeth's remarkable work by only giving him a few minutes of attention. So like quite a few others I've now made a video just about his life and work, which is also on the channel.

@@petebeard thanks, glad you wrote back since I forgot the thumb up. Wyeth lived not far from here and the library where I worked on LI had an original of his hanging in their lobby, a Treasure Island illustration. As a youth my friends went to art school and taught me many things in conversation. As a child I went to the Andrew W. art exhibit at the NYC Meto Museum. Theirs was a colorful life with NC as dad for sure...saw the home made film about them...

I don't think of N. C. Wyeth as unsung. Far from it. He makes Rockwell look like a cartoonist. Has to be AT LEAST the godfather of American illustration. Glad you brought him up tho, always appreciate seeing his stuff!
@petebeard
@petebeard 3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks. I would not consider Wyeth - or many other of the American greats to be unsung either. But the majority of my viewers are not American, and many of them are also young and therefore (and I mean it with sympathy) largely ignorant of anything that happened anything more than 2 days ago. I think you might be shocked at how few actually know about what you might consider household names.

Hello and you're not the first. Actually it isn't always a horse - the idea started with the first in the series which I thought made a nice 'heroic' image. Hi Peter Love John Held jr work ...i think that illustrator Russel Patterson owes a huge dept to this unsung hero ???

Hi again and that's certainly true (but just to nitpick I'm not sure I'd go as far as 'huge'). And you can see similar getting absorbed into later illustratrs vis Patterson. What baffles me is where the hell Held got his style from. I can't think of any earlier Americans pursuing that geometric approach. Maybe he was that rarest of illustrators - a true original.

@@petebeard Hello Pete I should've made the asterisk and *"kidding"* in bold type. My apology for my schist sense of 'humor'. With Wyeth's quote "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed, one cannot merge from one into the other." ... makes me curious at what point is there a difference? Is it in illustration for advertisement, the image must be read at once while painting it unfolds over time? Though, repeatly viewing your very well made videos I enjoy pausing and taking time to look at an illustration. Or, is illustration butt wipe for the masses? Uncoated paper. My sister once said you could spent days creating one frame of a 'cartoon' for a periodical yet people think it took or should have taken a minute or so to sketch it out. Same goes for the price. Some people don't understand the value of an illustration. I was interested to read Norm Saunders was initially paid $1.25 per hour for his pulp work. Roomfulls of pulp artwork were trashed by publishers thinking they were a dime a dozen. Anyway, something to wonder about as I enjoy your art presentations *Thanks*

P.s. 😏 Gonna appreciate the British understatement. Pompous to disain for a whole generation of American painters. O.k., but ... Where does that leave the expatriate John Singer Sargent, others i.e. Whistler.? Do they get a free pass? Note: respect your opinion. Best

I should have clarified - my lack of enthusiasm for representation in early 20th century illustration (and art for that matter) is without national bias. I'm no fan of the pre-raphaelites either. It's just that 'realism'I generally shows a certain lack of imagination compared to more individualistic approaches. At heart I'll always prefer a cartoon.

@@petebeard Understood from previous comments of yours representationalism isn't your ... well, cup of tea. And, yea, lot of it in those times. *Enjoy* your portfolio work. Very positive. My favorite is MotorHead guy with chihuahua. Seen heavy metalists* after a hard night in the mosh pit go home to their toy pet ... and petite girlfriend. Plug for Gahan Wilson. Hell Boy. If there is ever a fun compilation of cartoonists video. Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" is a period piece of those times but its a movie.
