I'm Portuguese, second generation American. Grew up in the Central valley and graduated Fresno State Civil Engineering. My family came from the Azores by ship first landing in Hawaii in the late 1800s working on sugar plantation with the promise/contract for land in exchange. After 4 years of working the promise/contract was never kept. So my family came to Bolinas CA. They ran a vineyard there, it's now part of Bolinas state park. My grandfather started a dairy in the Central valley. Both sides of my family are Portuguese dairy farmers in Central valley.

Wow! I loved this video!! Although I'm only biologically 38% Portuguese, I totally identify as "Portuguese... my ancestors came from the Azores." They entered in New England. I'm second generation born in America. My father was one of nine children. Most settled in New England. Sadly, I did not grow-up with my father or around my family. I went on a search for them in the 1980's. I found an uncle in Newport, RI, and through him I connected with my huge Portuguese family. I'm so proud of my grandparents, Jose' & Virginia, for having the courage to make the journey to America. They laid the foundation for all of us who followed. Thank you for telling their story.

Fun story: Colombus was acrually lost in sea, remember, a Journey by boats back then took months and years...he got lost and when he arrived in América he belived it was Índia (because that was the rout the portuguese were trying to find), and ended up calling the first tribes of América as Indians.

Thank you so much for these wonderful stories from a proud and courageous people. They are truly American's who have lifted themselves up by their bootstraps. Their daring, hard-work and grit continue to inspire as well as instill pride and much love in their descendants. I am a product of Portuguese -Americans who settled in New England. Their stories are quite similar although most were involved in factory work instead of the farm. Love of their homeland it's language and culture were an integral part of their legacy. Their descendants have not failed to make them proud. They are and will continue to contribute to every aspect of the American economy . They are engaged in every profession from education to law. They are also highly visible as entrepreneurs . Engaged in a myriad of businesses as well as proprietorship. Their pride, honesty, and hard work make them coveted assets in the communities in which they settle. Much love to all things Portuguese. Portugal may be a small country with a tiny population but it's contributions to the world, especially Europe, are of gargantuan proportion.

Awww man, this video is awesome. Seeing all these wonderful Portuguese people telling their stories, reminds me of my family here in Hawai'i. The two sides of my family immigrated here from the Azores and Madeiras. Even though the California and Hawai'i Portuguese lived an Ocean apart the stories are so similar. Watching these people sharing their stories, the speech patterns and mannerisms are also so similar. Makes me miss my Papa and Nana so much. Fun fact, in Hawai'i Portuguese are called Podagee. We are know for talking to much and talking with our hands! 😂

As a Canadian born from parents from Sao Miguel Azores who came to Toronto in the late sixties I'm very grateful to my aunt and uncle who were the pioneers who risked much in the fifties to start life in a cold Canadian city and eventually brought over their brother's and sister's families over.

Isabel Cabral's testimonial is that kinda golbal heritage and rite of passage that got lost in time. Parents making sure their kids know of the sacrifice they endured for their kids. You can tell by her tears and "voz embargada" that she knows exactly what her parents have gone through to make sure she would have a better life. I praise that lesson.

Than evolved in a bad way if you lost those customs! Family, traditions, identity, and God it's one of the pillars of a good society! Any society who loses their morals, values and decency are completely doomed to have only crime and depravity and that's a fact! Well you are now seeing many USA STATES choosing that road and its a complete disaster! 🤦♂️ If it's not what you mean than I apologize, maybe you are talking about immigration only! some of the Holy Ghost traditions in California aren't from the Azores for example the traditions of the Queens but it is interesting that some of those traditions have been imported back into the Azores and then again in the Azores they put their own spin on it. It is true the Catholic Church plays a much bigger role in the lives of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores and their descendants than it does in general in the Azores.
