From Hamilton’s devastating crash, to Verstappen’s dramatic incident… which even destroyed a F1 driver’s career, these are the terrible crashes that changed F1 forever!
And we gotta start with Fernando Alonso.
In 2016, Alonso crashed badly as he went flying against a wall in Australian gp. He went flipping through the air before coming to rest upside down at 200 mph. Luckily, he wasn't seriously injured and was capable of escaping his McLaren. But trust me guys, that’s nothing. Cuz what Max’s father Jos Verstappen suffered from was one of the most infamous fire incidents in F1 history.

The most horrific crash in F1 I've seen on film is from 1977 South African GP when Welsh driver Tom Pryce hits a well meaning fire marshal who was running across the straight to attend to a car on fire on the other side of the track. What followed was quite gruesome when Pryce hits him head on doing around 180mph resulting in the disintegration of the fire marshal and the death of Pryce as his head hit the fire extinguisher of the marshal. This is on KZfaq and is not for the faint hearted, the race was won by Niki Lauda.

What’s worse was Gordon Smiley’s Indianapolis 500 crash. This is what the CART Medical Director said: “While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact ... I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma."

The cars of th 1960's were nothing but an engine with Wheels there were no Safety features at all, It normal to have 5 drivers die in a Race season. There is a problem with making the cars too safe it makes drivers feel that they can be over careless. NASCAR is a proven case for that.

@@kiri8601 Since the introduction of the halo there have been dozens of cases where if it were absent, it would mean certain death. Yet considering the years 2004-2009 for instance. Before it's implementation, there was not a single death nor career breaking injury resultant from the lack of a halo.

@@elitiller8623I’m not sure what you’re implying here. Are you saying that the halo has increased the likelihood of these crashes? Are you saying that there’s some sort of conspiracy to increase the number of these crashes in order to justify the halo? Obviously both of these are completely ridiculous, and you’ve picked an incredibly small timespan to make that assertion. What’s more, safety developments are made to reduce the likelihood not only of death, but of injury to the drivers. Just because nobody died in the few years before the halo in a manner that the halo would helped, doesn’t mean that it was not a worthwhile introduction. Also, since the halo was a bit of a hot button topic, and when it saves death or injury it’s very visible and obvious to the audience, it is lauded every time it does that. Without the halo the drivers in these crashes could’ve been fine, but we don’t know. The point is that the halo could’ve saved their lives, but we don’t know, all we know is that it certainly helped. Also dozens is a massive exaggeration. Probably less than a dozen where you could reasonably make the claim that the crash could’ve been fatal without the halo.

Senna didn’t lose control, the steering column failed.

Devastating to watch this video. The sport i love so much is (not so much now) was so so dangerous. Every Belgium GP I pray everyone survives. Suzuka is as bad. Breaks my heart, but I can't stop watching 😏

History? I only see from 90s and beyond for 4 minutes, that much i lasted with such theatrical commentary.

Lauda himself has said that the changes that happened after his accident were already planned and would have happened anyway. Nurburgring was already too dangerous, had come to the end of it's contract and drivers had refused to continue racing there on that circuit.

Too many annoying random headlines popping up in this video so didn’t make it beyond Senna’s crash. Is there a version of this video without all the annoying text that keeps popping up?

Grosjean's Crash was in 2020 not in 2018. Mistakes happen to all of us, so don't worry, I don't judge you because of that.

1:25 was a bit of cheap segway. Jos Verstappen wasn't in a crash, he was in the pits. Also Senna didn't have a fiery crash.

I assume Mazepin and Latifi are on the list for comic relief because neither of them had more than a minor shunt in F1.

By the way in Grosjean’s crash he was stuck in the car for 2 minuets and 43 seconds not 27 seconds.
