100 years ago, all mahjong tiles were made by hand. The shin bones of cattle were used for the face, and bamboo for the backing. During the American mahjong craze of 1920-24, there was so much demand for tiles that China ran out of shin bones, and the Chicago slaughterhouses had to ship bones to China to make more tiles!

卓はそんなに変わらない感じですね知り合いの中じゃ手麻雀の時に3段の山を作ってる人もいるし。。そもそも中国では河を綺麗に並ばないのも原因かな。。？故意に捨て牌を隠したりして、手持ちの危ないやつをコッソリと出すのかな。。？それとなんか日本の牌だと小さいとか言う奴もいるし。。。聞いたら中国の真ん中のくらいの内陸地方だと54ミリ牌が好ましいところもあるそうで。。逆に海に近いほど小さいサイズのがなじむ感じだそうです。。 (一説によるとその地方は牌が大きいほど運が良くなるとか、雀荘が42ミリよりも小さい牌を出したらすっげー怒られるだそうです。) (なのにローカルでは役とかハンとかのルールがあまり効かないだそうで。。) (本当に上がる時が飛んでくるデカいやつとの間違いじゃないのかな。。。)

We own a set here at home but it has a lot more stones. The set shown in this video looks like the sets for smaller automatic tables where you use fewer sets. Incredible to see how much manual labour goes into the manufacturing of these stones!

They are missing the winds, dragons, flowers and seasons. I have to say that I appreciate my old bone/bamboo tiles that are hand cut and painted over the machine made ones.

@@seus2731 Our set was a gift from my late father in law. Since he was a Kunming (China) resident I guess he purchased it there. Here in Belgium from time to time you can find them in Asian stores in Chinatown.

中國廠商從來都不會注重員工健康及安全工作環境石英砂對身體的影響：人長期吸入，會引致肺部組織受破壞，這些極微細的石棉纖維會沉積在肺氣泡內，引致肺部組織逐步纖維化，進而影響肺部氣體交換的功能。 2.石英砂的粉塵極細，比表面積達到100m2/g以上可以懸浮在空氣中，如果人長期吸入含有石英砂的粉塵，就會患肺病。

This is for auto desk which contains magnets. It's thicker so it can stand easily. Triditional Mahjong's back side part is usually green, and totally much thinner, handles much better.

製造業をしていた立場としては、粉塵が舞うならゴーグルぐらい付けさせなよとは思った。あと1セットずつ作ってから不良品を抜き取り、さらに複数ロットをごちゃまぜに研磨してから色を付けてたけど、不良品になった牌の偏りによっては着色時に1セット揃わない場合もあるのでは？　そうでなくても一度バラバラになった牌を再び1セット揃え、かつ決められた場所にセットしなおすのはかなり時間がかかりそう。

They are not that durable as you thought. Once a single tile cracked, even just a small one, you need to buy a new whole set. Otherwise every player will know which tile it is.

I play Mahjong everyday on my computer with a Finnish program called "4 Winds." I play by Chinese Official rules. These workers make the world a happier place. What a fine product they produce, but I prefer tiles with a color backing. Is this factory in China or Taiwan?

Just PSA: don’t ever play with auto shuffle / deal tables if you have even the slightly suspicion. A programmable table go as low as $400 USD and most tables come with the program function nowadays. Preset / activation by watch / phone etc etc. Even home games, host use it to lessen the pain “on those bad losing nights” … right … as if.

There will be a huge impact on our society if all processes are fully optimized - reduce human involvement. What happens to jobless people - people who really want to work ? What are the consequences ? Hungry people are angry people. Hungry and angry people will do anything to survive. That's scary.
