If you were a fan of a sports car or formula car racing in the 1970’s one of the magical names was Shadow. Led by the enigmatic Don Nichols, Shadow was an iconic American race team.
Raised as an orphan in Missouri, Nichols left high school before graduation for a long career with the US Army. As a Pathfinder paratrooper, he jumped into Normandy before dawn on D-Day, whereupon he promptly sustained wounds -- the first of many.
In later years Captain Nichols served in the Far East as a counterintelligence officer (and a CIA operative, some say, but the man himself refused to say). He went on to make a fortune in Japanese auto racing … only to spend it all on his American team.
This born-to-battle man developed a series of competition machines, from the original, startlingly radical “Tiny Tire” Can-Am car through to the beautiful 1974 championship-winning DN4, along with a dozen Formula 1 model. Shadow also competed in F5000 and Center-Seat Can-Am.
Shadow's best cars were winners: in Can-Am (four races in 1974 along with the championship), in F1 (1977 Grand Prix of Austria), and F5000 (1976 Road America). The cars deserved more, but even the many models that missed victories are memorable. Shadows typically presented a certain distinctive, elegant style, and often their gifted designers introduced new concepts that were quickly copied by rivals. Nor must it be forgotten that the results the team did achieve actually rank it alongside other US rivals who contested those same 3 series: Chaparral, Eagle, and Penske. But Shadow never achieved the same acclaim. In this 50th anniversary year of the marque’s debut, the time has come to give Shadow the honor that’s long been due, says author Lyons.

I've seen these cars at Road America since I was a little kid. I lived two miles from turn 1 and could hear these chevy big blocks clearly from my bedroom.

Thanks for sharing this excellent presentation. The original Mk1 with the crazy tiny wheel and strange pedals was just bonkers.

This was absolutely awesome as it answered questions that I had about the origin of this car for half a century! When I was a little kid I bought a clear lexan replica of the original body style with rear radiators for my 1/24th scale slot car, but at the time could never find any information about it, or even what colour I was supposed to paint it. Whenever I read a racing magazine showing the Shadow in action, (or Pete's Can-am book many years later) they only showed the version with the wing mounted radiators and open wheel wells. For many years I wondered whether the body style of my slot car was a real race car, or it was something totally made up by the slot car company. Fifty years later I now understand that the car was indeed real, and the reasons why the original version never appeared in any of the racing magazines at the time. I found this video by chance as for some reason it appeared in my side bar, and watching it totally made my day.

I have the greatest admiration for George Follmer for DARING to race the original Shadow. Going 200 mph in a car where your feet will get to the accident before the front wheels, and depending on 8" front brake discs to keep the accident from happening takes an extreme amount of bravery. The initial mockups and pictures don't do the original car justice. The picture of the full-up red car on the track makes one think that the goal of the designer was to put a big-block Chevy on a go-kart.

I wonder if Brian Bowlesby was inspired by this crazy machine. Please bring Pete back to talk about the later CanAm Shadows and F1 Shadows.

I just finished the Shadow book, and it was the most enjoyable read I've had in a long time. I saw those cars race many times at Mid-Ohio, Mosport, and Watkins Glen, and it was great to get the inside scoop.

Talk about reinventing the wheel. The only Shadow cars I remember were the 74’ models, a real sweet design. I got this recommendation after watching watching a 2020 CanAm Challenge race at Long Beach just a few days ago. They were UOP #101 &102.

I can tell just by looking at the chassis that it would have the torsional stiffness of a wet lettuce. SO many compromises for a smallish frontal area. It was totally, utterly wonderfully insane but obviously doomed to failure. Loved the talk.

I am from Missouri and had success in road racing in California. Missouri can be a boring place resulting in a longing to do something more significant. Focus, determination, common sense and practical creativity are all traits contributing to the extra- ordinary qualities of a man from Missouri. We even build the fastest boats in Miami Beach, Florida known as the Lamborghini as well as The Black Diamond just west of St. Louis by MTI. Yes, Missouri is a boring place, but it sure forces one to think outside of the box in order to compete at a higher level and eventually achieve one's objective. G.
