UP 8444 in Film

A recent viewer request prompted this effort, a compilation of Red Moser's footage and scenes from the Ebay vault, taken between 1976 and 1980, covering a number of Denver-Laramie trips with UP 8444. Included are several light engine moves which were routine at the time, shuffling the engine between Cheyenne and Denver. Also included is a brief cameo of Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr making its stop at Laramie WY. Sounds are from contemporary recordings as well as more recent runs of the 844. Enjoy!

One of the most beautiful locomotives on the UP roster and the only American locomotive to never be retired from her original owner.

Some excellent footage accompanied by equally excellent sound effects. I have always liked the fact that she was able to outlast the class of GP30 diesels that forced her number change in 1962 allowing her to resume with her original cab number in 1989. Thanks so much for all your efforts.

When I visit travel town in Bubank Ca. It just makes me sad that all these incredible engines are stuffed and mounted. Good to see 8444 alive and in her glory !

Amazing video!! So, 8444 got renumbered to UP 844? If that's right then I saw this engine, when it came to Memphis for the "Big River Crossing" opening.. The Big River Crossing, is a pedestrian walkway bridge over the Mississippi from Memphis TN to Marion AR and was built off of the Union Pacific Harahan Bridge. When UP 844 came to Memphis, it stopped, on the bridge, and then moved forward into town, when it came through, some official peoples let pedestrians (for the first time ever) onto the Big River Crossing pedestrian bridge.

The locomotive was originally numbered 844. In 1962, the UP bought a batch of GP30's in the 800 series, one of which was 844. To avoid the conflict of 2 locos with the same number, the steam engine was renumbered 8444 until 1989, when the GP30 844 was retired and the steam loco reverted to its original number.

@@norfolksouthernmemphiswest5978 Fun fact: Union Pacific has an SD70ACe on their roster with the 8444 number. You can find video of it here on TubeYou on regular freights and with the 844 on an excursion in Oregon in, I think, 2010.

How times have changed. No auxiliary water tender, Diesel helper, or crew car. Mostly standard coaches, maybe one premium seating car/dome, and you could buy a ticket for under $50.

No, that’s just sounds from the 844 in more recent times being used as filler due to the absence of the audio that would go with the film had there been any recorded. From what I know, so the possibility of error is present, the 844(4) had the same whistle from the 70’s on through to when that whistle was plum worn out in 2011.

My Uncle Dave was engineer for U.P. in Idaho. He got to run her to Boisie, and said he was head to toe sooty after that run. He liked SD 40-2 better. I told him he was f'ing crazy. He got to run steam in the ma Modern age. He was a salty dude 😝
