More great action from the big Union Pacific steam double header with Big Boy 4014 and 4-8-4 844. Heading from Ogden to Evanston, Wyoming. Many thanks to Union Pacific for this grand interaction with the public. Good Show! To answer some of the questions about the diesel in the train: It can provide auxiliary power for some of the cars' systems, and can give dynamic braking to save wear-and-tear on the vintage equipment, and could provide some emergency motive power if needed. (And, yes -- in the late hours of the night editing this video in our hotel room, we made a mistake that we've got to own -- we made a typo in the number on the title. Dang we hate that. Sorry.) Here's a link to another UP steam video from the Airailimages Channel: • Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 ...
Please give this video a Thumbs Up!

At 3:47 4014 starts pulling. Before that she was just idling along. The black smoke comes on and the audio really picks up the interest. What a GREAT video. I was too young to see steam in person, but this video tells me a bit of what I, no, WE, all missed when the roads switched over to diesel electric and relegated steam to the hobby rides. Years ago Alan Pegler, owner of the world-famous locomotive "Flying Scotsman", Took it across the pond to our wonderful friends in the United States of America, and toured the US with it. Perhaps Union Pacific would consider reciprocating this most sporting of gestures and bring 4014 across to visit us in Britain. We have around 185 Preserved Steam railways in Britain, running over 1000's of miles of track..... just right for 4014. A big "Thank You" to Union Pacific for making 4014 run again....

Thank you for posting this video. I am enjoying the sight of 'Big Boy' from the comfort of my own home in England. Because of the short distances between our major cities, our longest passenger trainer were only ever 12 coaches, so our largest locomotives are less than half the size of Big Boy. Your video really shows the scale of this locomotive, especially against people and cars. It can't have been cheap for UP to restore this loco.

I think people have the wrong impression of the Big Boy class. They were not designed for speed, but hauling capacity during the manufacturing production boom in the 40s. Its obvious when you look at the small driving wheels, compared to the 844. They were the ultimate steam heavy hauler. I shudder to think how much oil they burned per mile under full load.

@@johnburger1681 , I served a mission for my church when I was 20. I went to South Africa and at that time they were still using steam. When I was young (3-4) in the early 50s, we lived in Bountiful UT and our home was next to the switch yards. On my mission we lived about 1/4 mile from the switch yards at The port at Port Elizabeth. Listening to the engines at night brought back memories of my childhood. When we traveled it was always by train. At that time train travel was total luxury. 7 course meals, pulman sleeper, the works all included in the ticket price. In the cities you were moved by electric or diesel, but when you got out of the city you were hooked to steam. You can't believe how nice it is to wake up in the night and listen to the sound of rails, then when you came to a curve you could hear the steam engine until the train was back in a straight line then roll over and go back to sleep. The average length of a trip was around 24 hours. On day we came across a switch engine that was waiting for some bulk cars to be filled, so we (my companion and I ) climbed up and visited with the train driver (that's what they are called over there) and he offered to let me drive the engine. I have that on a super 8 movie. That is a memory of a lifetime. I have ridden many of the narrow gage lines here, such as the Durango & Silverton, Toltec & Cumbries etc. But to be able to watch 4014 again is certainly a special treat!

I'm surprised UP didn't use one of their heritage units as the diesel backup, although perhaps they didn't want it to be too conspicuous.

I'd guess that the head office bosses wouldn't go for all three locomotives being antique. Makes sense to me - your emergency backup equipment should be known-good...

I'm actually not sure about that. Though you could make the argument that 6936 has run a bit too much as a backup engine. As for the E9m's, while that would be more than enough braking power, it's not exactly cost effective to run three passenger diesels, that only use 2/3 of their axles for traction and braking, for this job when a more modern six axle unit with AC traction and dynamics can do better

@@russellgxy2905 I would agree with your conclusion. This also may have something to do with insurance and mitigating some of the excruciating insurance costs that are associated with a steam program. Having a modern day locomotive with modern day safety systems maybe an insurance requirement.
