UP&BNSF Street Running in Jack London Square, CA

Multiple Freight Trains going through Jack London Square on the street with other cars. If you like hearing trains give horn, then this is the the right video for you. Ive always wanted to go here and i finally went and had a blast! Lots of trains go through Jack London Square CA every day i caught 3 freight trains and 4 Amtrak trains within 2 hours. This Video only shows the Freight Trains i caught, while my next video will show all the Amtrak Trains i caught Street Running.

When I lived in San Francisco 1980-84, I went to Jack London Square once. I think I took BART. Don't remember any trains or Street Running, though. If I'd known, I would have gone back!

One or two blocks east of here the Western Pacific ran trains in the middle of the street. The original WP California Zephyr had a station at Jack London Square and the building is still there.

I am fascinated by these trains running along main streets where cars run too. This is not something that happens in Britain, except for trams

@GEES44DC I work for the UP. UP never runs with the long hood as the front, it's always short hood is front. So I see a train making a reverse move. Like I said, maybe dispatcher give them authority to make such a move or conductor or brakeman is down at the other end of the move. Either way, some type of protection is needed

@sydneysmooth21 There are actually quite a lot of streets like this in the U.S that allow freight & passenger trains to use the road just like cars. Try searching "Fort Collins Street Running" thats another great spot to catch large freight trains with cars driving right next to each other.

Not especially so, since there's plenty of warning before trains come along with their speed being limited to 15 MPH, and lowering barriers prevent traffic from entering the road at the wrong time. The street running segment of track is only next to the touristy waterfront Jack London Square and a few condo buildings. A tunnel would be unfeasible and locals have voted against turning it into an over-road viaduct.

@GEES44DC Maybe it's different on the main line. I work at a servicing facility where if a cab is facing in the opposite direction of movement, you need a shove protection. After posting this, I thought the train might have had protection from the dispatcher. If your an engineer/conductor/manager, thanks for the insight

Its legal to run long hood forward as long as you've got all your warning devices n crap. Some railroads might have restricted it further but I know its legal where I work

Im shocked that you have trains running through the middle of a city street like a tram does, yet a tram ( streetcar is designed for the street) unlike a massive long freight train!

"UP never runs with the long hood as the front" You don't work for up... Up here in Washington state locals S41, S43, and S49 will run longhood forwards depending on there workorder. And were talking about 60 miles from Seattle to Tacoma... Longhood Forward......
