Fe, an American Kestrel and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, showing off her small size!
North America's smallest and most common falcon species, the American Kestrel, packs a predator’s fierce intensity into a small body! American Kestrels eat insects and other invertebrates, as well as small rodents and birds. Common foods include grasshoppers, cicadas, beetles, and dragonflies; scorpions and spiders; butterflies and moths; voles, mice, shrews, bats, and small songbirds. American Kestrels also sometimes eat small snakes, lizards, and frogs. And some people have reported seeing American Kestrels take larger prey, including red squirrels and Northern Flickers.

It is not a hawk. Kestrels are falcons, the difference being falcons are generally smaller, with more slender wings and a short, rounded head. This body shape makes falcons better as insane speed maneuvering in the air that we associate with falconry. Hawks are much, much less agile.
@John-pk3oh
@John-pk3oh Жыл бұрын
Even though they are also called Sparrow Hawks, they. are indeed FALCONS ! I have identified them as falcons with their very pointed wings, and a very snappy downward thrust of their wings when they fly ! Marlins are the next larger falcons, and their top side is a blue slate color 🥰

@@tertiusdurham oh definitely disagreeing if you’re saying it’s commonly used today. Certainly not in birding/bird watching, falconry, wildlife rehabbing, or nature enthusiast circles. Maybe old farmers still refer to them as that. But sparrowhawk is an old misnomer that confuses people into thinking the tiny raptor is a bird hunting accipiter, not the mostly rodent, and insect, hunting falcon it truly is.

Yeah, both species are lovely birds. I've visited North America before, spotted these guys a few times and yes, they can hover. I'm not sure if they do it as much as ours though? Whenever you see one here, it's always A) hovering or B) flying to a spot where it wants to hover lol. That wasn't always the case when I spotted the American ones, but obviously I have limited experience so could be wrong.

the war has lasted twenty years... the dragonets will come. When the land is soaked in blood and tears... the dragonets will come. Find the SeaWing egg of deepest blue. Wings of night shall come to you. The largest egg in mountain high will give to you the wings of sky. For wings of earth, search through the mud for an egg the color of dragon blood. And hidden alone from the rival queens, the SandWing egg awaits unseen. Of three queens who blister and blaze and burn, two shall die and one shall learn if she bows to a fate that is stronger and higher, she'll have the power of wings of fire. Five eggs to hatch on brightest night, five dragons born to end the fight. Darkness will rise to bring the light. The dragonets are coming.
