Raymond Burr is the only reason I actively seek out to watch the American dubs he's a part of. His character, even if awkwardly placed at time, is compelling and his willingness to commit to the role to add to instead of attempting to lessen these movies, when a lot of people still held extreme anti-japanese sentiments, is something I am grateful for.
@garyreid6165

I remember seeing his interview on Entertainment Tonight and he said that he likes Godzilla because Godzilla represents peace. The Japanese version was different and darker than Godzilla 1985. There was more with the reporter and more scenes of destruction by Godzilla in Tokyo. The scene aboard the Russian tracking ship was different and the meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister was even more intense with the American representative shouting in agreement with the Russian representative, “Yes. Exactly what he said!” Godzilla 1985 was a fun trip down memory lane as a fan. The inclusion of Raymond Burr was a great idea and it gave it a reference point, though it was limited. There was quite a bit of comedy on the American version. In either version, Godzilla was badder than before. The scene in Tokyo Bay before he walks on land after the Japanese military fire on him was classic. When we see the closeup on Godzilla’s eye, I began to say to myself, uh-oh. Godzilla’s ray was improved, too. Very impressive. Among other products that were being shown were Sony radios and Toyota and Nissan automobiles. Good times.

Excellent review. I've read Burr chewed out the developers for wanting to lighten things up, because Godzilla's an anti-nuclear allegory and _must_ be taken seriously. He gets _loads_ of respect from me for that. While some consider it cheesy, Martin's final speech is easily one of the most famous parts of the series for American fans, and it left one heck of an impression on me even though I was 5 when I first watched the film.

I thought that Steve Martin’s ending dialogue was very appropriate for this version because of what Godzilla represents. And Godzilla/Gojira represents many things. He is a force of nature, a nuclear weapon, a result of nuclear testing, and the shadow of death. These things are not to be tampered with. Man has to live with nature. But nature doesn’t have to live with man. I also remember seeing at the theater the classic animated short Bambi Meets Godzilla(it came on before the movie)by Marv Newland(I think that was his name).

NWP originally wanted this film to have more a of a comedy feel to it than the seriousness of a kaiju horror. Burr remained adamant that if NWP didn't take the source material seriously, he was ready to walk out on them. You can somewhat tell that the American scenes still have bits and pieces of that original comedic theme that they originally wanted to do.

It really is, we’ve heard him roar plenty of times but we’ve never heard a sound like that from him. Fun fact: the reason the american footage had that comedic tone was due to new world pictures desire to turn Godzilla into a comedy because they didn't take the movie itself serious. It was only due to Raymond Burr INSISTING they stay true to the core message of what Godzilla represents and keep the tone serious, ALSO there is a scene where one of the military officers cracks a joke about an urban renewal plan as godzilla goes on his rampage, to which Steve Martin turns and is clearly not amused, that isn't acting, that was Raymond Burr's genuine response to said joke.

Some stuff is good in the 1985 cut and I hope it gets a DVD release someday. -Soviet sub destruction is slick. -Sea louse attack is scarier. -I like the fire burning into the Godzilla title. -Steve Martin's closer is great. Really I do like Steve Martin in this in general. With lines like 'Major, I hope you succeed. But no matter what happens...Godzilla will live.' -I really like how in the U.S. cut it seems like Tokyo is somehow reduced to a ghost town. I mean I love in the Japanese cut people are fleeing for their lives during the Super X final battle but there is something to be said about damn lonely it seems for the remaining cast in Tokyo.

It was used in the original theatrical version, from what I’ve gathered, but someone at Toho said “Godzilla shouldn’t scream”. And thus, all home video releases use the showa roar instead. The only versions that do have the scream were the 1985 drama LP (basically the whole film but in record label format), certain versions of the export dub, and 1985.

This was my first time seeing a Godzilla movie in a theater when I was 11-years old. It was a weekend, so not many people were there, ironically. It was just me, my friend and maybe one other person in the entire theater? I thoroughly enjoyed it, probably more than my friend. There is something magical about seeing a G-Film in theaters. Fast forward some 30+ years and "King Kong vs. Godzilla" is due out at the end of the month, and I can't wait to stream it in 4K, on my HDR HDTV due to Covid. This was my first Godzilla film when I was a wee lad the year it came out. It's always been my favorite G film. Oh, sure there are better G films, but this is always going to be my favorite. I love the original '84 version as well, but this cut edited out a fair amount of Godzilla just standing and staring as well as those awful red shots of the giant foot they made. This film *is* missing the beautiful shot of Godzilla's reflection in that one building, but it's not like that made or broke the film for me. Also, I think the soundtrack for this film is one of the most underrated out of all the films. It's not Ifukube, but damn does it fit the film.

I found this movie at a rental store shortly after discovering Godzilla with the 1998 film. While I loved 98, this movie showed me what Godzilla is REALLY all about. It's my favorite movie (well, maybe the Japanese version now but still) and I doubt any movie will affect me that strongly ever again. What is really frustrating is that this version actually does have some better editing and sound that makes it a bit more complicated as to which version is actually the best watch. That Dr. Pepper stuff is pretty awful though.

Overall, I much prefer the original Japanese version. However, there are a few little things I like better about 1985. I think Raymond Burr's narration (particularly during the climax) makes for a much more potent ending. I also like a little detail that not a lot of people seem to mention from the scene where the main characters try the bird frequency on Godzilla while he's standing outside their window. In the Japanese version, Godzilla just turns around and stairs at them awkwardly while in the American version, it's edited in such a way that it seems like Godzilla is about to attack them. It seems to fit better in terms of what the device actually does and Godzilla's personality. Obviously this is all just my opinion, but it's interesting to talk about :)

I’d would literally rent this movie out reach time at my local library as a child. It was my first true Godzilla film, granted Burr-version, but it felt much more respectful of American audiences. Every week I’d watch the movie, return it, wait again and rent, repeat. This is how I got into Godzilla, how 84 Goji’s roar is my favorite and was ecstatic when they used it for Shin-Goji’s “death-scene”. I appreciated the animatronics used and the increase in scale, really brought him back to his roots with the gritty tone. The opening scene where he attacks the nuclear power plant will be burned into my memory forever, it was truly bad ass hearing his giant footsteps (RUMBLE..RUMBLE...RUMBLE), then as the camera panned up to his face, slowly creeped up and revealed how big this Goji is, then BLAM!!!!! “Skreeeeeoooonnkkkk!!!!” I really love the ending bit of his roar too, super cool how they went back and remade the roar using the old technique. I still own a few VHS copies of the Hesei movies too!

Where did you find the footage of 1985 in this quality? I've only ever been able to find awful VHS rips of it. This version was the first Godzilla movie I remember seeing all the way through, my orignal exposure being snippets of Mothra vs Godzilla on weekday TV occasionally. I wouldn't mind seeing this version again, I do have a lot of fond memories of this cut, and actually prefer the ending a bit to the Japanese original. Between Raymond Burr's narration and that utterly haunting, literally nightmare-inducing scream they give Godzilla as he falls into the lava, it's honestly a nice edit and probably the only time I'll ever concede a dub improved something.

I want someone to make a supercut that's basically the Return of Godzilla but with Raymond Burr

Here I thought I saw every Gojira movie, I've seen the original 1984 film but I had no idea there was an ''85'' version with an American subplot.

It has a much tighter and better edit if you notice, scenes cut to better order and the music restructured to help the scenes flow well.

It's a shame the American DVD/Bluray didn't include the American cut the way DVDs of the original movie did.

Hey Omni! 👋😁 Supposedly Kraken originally wanted to include it, but was prevented by “ongoing copyright issues concerning music cues that New World Pictures borrowed from [the film] _Def-Con 4_ “

@@Gappasaurus Figured it was a rights thing. Maybe if Criterion ever snatches up the Heisei movies, they do the whole "including it as a bonus feature" thing they did with King Kong vs. Godzilla...assuming that would apply.

@@omniviewer2115 That could certainly be a viable workaround 🤔 And I for one would definitely be down with that collection 😁

It a shame that we'll probably never see this version on DVD or Blu-Ray since the original film edit for this film is still lost after New World Pictures got bought out after going defunct. Some believe 20th Century Fox has it misplaced somewhere in their film archives when they purchase the assets from NWP but most agree that the original edit is most likely lost. There also the issue that even if the film was found, 20th Century Fox who bought NWP would still need to get Toho's permission.

I honestly thought he was going to review Godzilla vs. the Thing a.k.a. the American version of Mothra vs. Godzilla after he reviewed the American version of King Kong vs. Godzilla since it included a additional scene in the film involving battleships but whatever Godzilla 1985 is a nice surprise.

In hindsight. I think the 1984 film would have been an easier sell as a full-on reboot of the franchise and not a 'new direct sequel' to the 1954 film. A total clean slate retelling/re-imagining of the original story. I also think that the new version having a title along the lines of "Godzilla Returns" or the proposed "Godzilla Lives" would have made it more marketable over here than the rather odd "Godzilla 1985"

In my opinion: this version of the return of Godzilla 1984 I think it’s better because there some scenes in godzilla 1984 that are to useless and slow paste and Raymond burr is a great actor probably the best version of godzilla 1984

Until Shin Godzilla and Minus One this was my favorite Godzilla movie and in some ways it still is. I credit this movie, and Godzilla King of the Monsters 1956 as the films that made me a Godzilla fan. I've seen the original Japanese cuts which are arguably better, but the americanized versions are the reason I even know what Godzilla is.
