Black did a great job as the over ambitious director. He was the perfect choice. And he acted well. The only person miscast was Adrien Brody who felt out of place in adventure blockbuster. And as the reviewer notes his relationship with Ann feels half baked and somehow Jackson could not unite or rejoin them very convincingly at the end (spoiler). But Naomi Watts did her job. As the reviewer notes. She was the emotional heart of the film and a lot was required of her. For somebody to emote a range of emotions in a block buster featuring a lot of creatures and to ensure that her bond with Kong did not feel cheesy or ludicrous required good acting skills.

Here's something I've noticed about Peter Jackson's movies, and that the theatrical cuts of his films feel too long, but the extended cuts actually feel shorter then they are. The same holds true in the case of the Director's cut of King Kong (2005).

By far the best King Kong remake ever made and easily one of the best remakes of a classic ever put to film. Rather than being a simple cash grab made nearly identical to the original not being a completely different, and unrecognizable reimagining, peter Jackson’s King Kong strikes that perfect balance between faithfulness to the original while being an original movie with its own identity. I love how creepy and forbidding skull island is in this remake, as well as all the dinosaurs and the creatures, and the 3 hr runtime (while a little too long I’ll admit) is paced out in a way to not feel boring, as I enjoyed the first act of the movie leading up to the island as well as the human characters, who are much better than here in the original imo. Plus I didn’t mind jack black as Carl denham lol. I have a lot of fond memories of this movie and this movie was my childhood, I remember owning the toys, getting hype from the trailers and watching it in the theater at the age of 5. Don’t care what anyone says, this is my favorite remake of all time. 4/5.

no movie is too long.... why do people watch tv series and trilogies then. This movie is a MASTERPIECE! thats why its 3 hours. A longer movie is a better movie, have we been peer pressured by the stupid into thinking a movie can be too long. The longer the better i find! more pay for your buck. This movie could have easily probaly been chopped up into 3 movies, if not 3 then atleast 2. And instead we pay for one film, one materpiece and thats what this movie is. People that complain its too long i say. whens the last time you read a good book? whens the last time you saw a good story and characters unfold? this movie is a masterpiece and im glad other people thiink soo too! awsome! one of my fav first time watched films ever!

I remember a couple of years ago we were watching a movie at University. I don't remember what movie it was, but it was set in the late 80s and at some point they mentioned King Kong. Some students started to mumble to each other, and one of them clearly said "wait, did King Kong already exist in the 80s?" That's when i realized that a good chunk of the general audience probably thinks that Peter Jackson created the character with this movie, and now i'm sure that there are people out there who think that Godzilla 98 is the original Godzilla

I don't care what these uncultured swine think. This movie is a masterpiece to me. To me, every scene has a purpose, a purpose that expresses more thought than what as it appears. The music is also great along with the characters' acting. Jack Black played a great Carl Denham. And characters: Jack Driscoll, Ann Darrow, Hayes, Jimmy, Englehorn and even Lumpy just meshed together to make the story feel so organic and the actor/actress' ability to make you just sink in to the movie is breathtaking to me. When I was 5 years old in 2005 watching this on DVD, I literally had my parents skip all the "boring" scenes every time I rewatched it, [every scene that didn't involve Skull Island or Ann/Kong moments except for the V-Rex scene] But now, I have to watch the ENTIRE movie because I love it that much, every scene has a major importance to it. It was generally adult, but it didn't involve a lot of mature things except only blood and violence, which is why I loved it as a kid. The lighting, the colors, the music, the setting, the acting, the humor, the advancing plot on the Venture ship while also reminding the audience that they'll be close to Skull Island anytime soon (their impending doom) is what makes the long first act arguably the best part in my opinion with only some of Act 2 - 3 coming into the fray. Weird, I loved the "action" bits as a kid for the longest time, but once I turned 18 and rewatched it again after so many years. I love what I considered the "boring" parts as a kid. THAT'S WHY I LOVE THIS MOVIE! To me, this is a work of art. And I hate how underrated and how overly criticized it is for "peoples' preferences of the movie's runtime length, or lacking vision of the great acting."

Always loved Naomi Watts' interpretation. Ann Farrow doesn't necessarily need to be a screaming damsel in distress. She can be smart, witty and able to take care of herself. And Kong is what I always imagine to possibly only exist as a gigantic silverback gorilla. Never did understood the human obsession with a bipedal ape, which is physically impossible.

This movie is not long and boring, People just dont read books or know a good story when they see it anymore or cant take the time to let the characters develop, its gotta be fast short film with non stop action and stupid story. This movie was a MASTERPIECE in everyway, i think its a criminally underated movie especially at its time, 2005. The oldtime feel, the adventure, How crazy jack black is and disregard for peoples lives lmao. kong on camera now lol. save the camera lol. The romance, the action, tense moments, bg scene, the deleted scenes, the fucking t rexes fighting king kong. The epic atmosphere and setting and acting and sotrytelling. This was a masterpiece! What do people want from movies anymore. if your reason for not liking a movie cuz its too long, thats just. idk how to respond to that, dont watch anymore sequels to movies then cuz you can only handle the fiirst film? like huh?? yeah kingkong is like two films in one, thats why its a masterpiece, maybe some people gotta turn it off half way and continue the next day. like how u would with a book. But maan, the people that dont like this movie, either just dont like the idea of a big monkey lmao, they dont like romance shit with the monkey and the maybe older setting. Other than that, theres no reason to hate a piece of GOLD like this film. Some people just have to give it a chance, and watch it when your in the mood for watching like a trilogy. The new king kong is good, but its just monsters and fighting, quick stupid cash grab movie no actors no story no time to set anything up, and yet people who hate this film problay prefer that one, thats why most people only watch movies and dont read books anymore. Our attentions spans are gone...... I really consider this one of my fav movies and besides that, just the amoutn of work that went into this film, you can definelty tell. its one of a kind thats for sure!

In my opinion, this is the Best Movie Remake of All-Time. It hits all the correct notes from the original, while adding more unique, genuine layers to it without sacrificing the identity and heart of the original entirely. And that's not easy to do. Plus, Peter Jackson had FULL Creative Control and he's a Hardcore King Kong fan which were both excellent and quite rare bonuses. Great review.

@@orcawithdrip827 Why is it only ok to express your positive feelings about something but someone can't express their dislike of it? That's just as valid a feeling that needs to be let out as any other feeling or emotion. If we don't do that, it can stifle a person. And this movie did suck overall. The Kong was great, and to offset that idiot Jack Black, it at least had Naomi Watts! But it was too long, overblown and the Mr. Hayes/Jimmy story was absolutely unnecessary. If people needed those two characters to figure out this was a "Heart of Darkness" story, then they're not paying enough attention. The natives were inexplicably too hostile and Adrian Brody was a silly "love interest/hero". If it didn't have Jack Black and they cut it down to 90 minutes, it has a chance.

"Let me claim the Brontosaurus stampede looks dated now rather than constructively explaining how and why!" Seriously, I've seen tons of CGI today that looks worse. I think the Brontosaurus stampede looks amazing. Only "bad" things about it might be that the lightning is slightly off on the human characters, and that it's a bit covnenient that they survived (though, not really impossible). But, none of that has to do with the CGI on the actual Brontosauruses. It's nothing but a baseless claim. You clearly don't know or understand how CGI works, and you are only criticising it to jump on the bandwagon. Otherwise, you wouldn't just make that baseless claim without backing it up.

What really makes it for me is that Ann and Kong relationship is actually something more then just scared damsel and terrifying beast. I like all the side characters and their little arcs, the animation and vfx is pretty top notch. My few complaints would be the few kinda pointless or unnecessary scenes, cut the ship time a little like ann and jack awkward meeting or bruse with his postars, i do like the bronto stampede, but would have preferred the swamp attack instead.

This movie is a goddamn artistic masterpiece! I bloody love it as I have done since I was 11! This is one of my favourite movies ever and I regard it as one of the best movies ever made! Thank you Peter Jackson and co. for creating this mesmerising brilliance!

There's a fan edit on Vimeo that trims the movie down to more closely match the pacing of the original. That's how I always rewatch the movie.

I have this on DVD ever since 2006, but I just caught this film on TV last night. Man... I had no idea I needed to revisit this film. The characters, the atmosphere, the nostalgia, the V-Rex fight, the spider pit, the quieter moments, it really lifted my spirits in these harsh times. I didn't even find the first chunk in the boat boring, there was so much character interaction and build up. There's so much schlock these days, I guess I took for granted how good and genuinely enjoyable this actually was.

I remember watching this movie as a 8 year old in the theaters... fell in love with the movie and bought the 1933 and 1976 King Kong movies at Blockbuster lol. I remember thinking how real it looked but this was back in 2005 and I know a lot of comments are about the CGI but I think for a movie made 16 years ago it holds up.

Good review, I just desagree at one point, and that is something I have seen in other videos about it: the relationship of Ann and Jack and his character in general, I really like them together. I also think jack is charming and has good lines and personality. Also, the romance between them is believable for me.

By far and away the best Kong film ever made. A King Kong movie told with the same epic scale and quality of the best Lord of the Rings films. Pure perfection.

I have a lot of nostalgia for this film if I'm being honest. I had one of my best theater experiences sitting down with this movie. It wasn't anything different from the norm but it was just a lot of fun. Not only that but my high school orchestra teacher got us to play a King Kong medley which was actually pretty neat.

This movie is without a doubt one of the best remakes of a classic movie ever! Even though Kong'76 is my favorite I won't deny that this remake blows that one out of the water. Plus I think this is the best Kong film ever made aside from the Original 1933 classic. I remembered seeing it in theaters when it came out with me uncle and it was a great experience! Kind of made me wish there was a sequel aka Son of Kong remake. Unfortunately, it didn't happen and that's okay this movie didn't need a sequel because it was perfectly told as a one off film. Plus the level of detail and passion this film has was outstanding! I do agree that there shouldn't be another King Kong remake because this one is it! Not to mention the cast and crew did such an amazing job making this film! Peter Jackson is one of the best filmmakers out there and it's a shame he's not making more epics like this movie. I still think that this movie is better than Kong: Skull Island since I don't really like that film, TBH. Overall great review!

Fun fact: the spider pit was going to be in the 1933 kong, but was too complicated, so they never dit it, but I think on the DVD or Blue ray there is a video on the extra features of what it wold of looked like

I remember that when the movie came out, it didnt get very good reviews. But for me it was like a movie tailored specifically to me: 3 hours of CGI epicness one part and the other being a drama even my 14 year old self could comprehend and empathize with.

it sems to me that by extending the Carl denhan chatacter there can be NO mystery about what he wants, and his obssesive ruthlessness to get it. this can only be good making him more BELIEVABLE in this version than the minimalist wooden version seen in the 1933 classic, also if their were ever any doubt as to WHY Ann Darrow would agree to go on a dangerous voyage to an unchartered part of the world, thats laid to rest here by the depression & her love of Driscoll's work, plus when you give it some thought she uses her ...acting skills *demonstrated in the opening montage) to entertain kong in order to stay alive, unlike previous offerings to him

Something about this movie veing bloated and padded out to over 3 hours makes the ending so much more impactful, in my eyes...it felt like it took forever (and it did) but when it finally gets to the last act, you're filled with shock and awe and the payoff is tremendous. It's true much of this movie could've been trimmed down, but I honestly love it the way it is and hell, add some deleted scenes in there, heheh, I wouldn't mind (If only the swamp scene could fit in the final cut canonically)
