Upcoming LUNAR Event May Prove STONEHENGE’S Alignment With The MOON

The station stones at Stonehenge are known to align with the moon, but was this intentional? An upcoming rare lunar event will give archaeoastronomers the opportunity to study these alignments in more depth and hopefully answer this long-held question. In this week's ancient history news I discuss this story, as well as the discovery of a tomb belonging to a royal official and a priestess in Egypt, how machine learning is digitising the Indus Valley Script and what fossilised plants can tell us about the Iron Age Philistine culture.

It makes perfect sense Stonehenge would also be in sync with the Moon. And probably several other celestial bodies. But I know just a theory at this point and needs to be proven scientifically. I'm all for

These were all intriguing news bites. I believe Stonehenge has alignments with the sun and the moon. They dominate our sky and their movements would have been more noticeable in ages past. When humans were, hopefully, less preoccupied. Thanks for the info Laura! Much appreciated!

Cahokia is aligned with the moon cycle as well. The mounds placement mirror Orion

I read a few months ago that a massive new study of Cahokia was completed recently and the authors show it spanned over 1/2 the continental U.S. I didn't read the study at the time, just saved the link, and now I can't find the study though.

I mean, Stonehenge has been rebuilt in modern times.. How accurately can one assume it is in same constellation now as it was back when it was built?

Restoration is not the same as being rebuilt in the manner you may be suggesting. The stones are being reset in their original positions, which has little impact on how these sites would have worked. As for a different sky, the Earth's tilt varies between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees over a 41,000-year cycle. The last change occurred around 10,000 years ago, so people from the Neolithic period would have been looking at a sky similar to ours today. Nothing radically different in terms of constellations or the rise and set of both the sun and the moon. The only difference may be the angle in which these cosmic occurrences hit the stones. Off by a degree or two at best.

Astro-archaeology apparently is encoded in the distances between monuments,they should try studying moon calculations from averbury circle and the distances and angles from it to other monuments. carnack (france)would be interesting for these astro studies,and understanding how man first tried to measure/guestamate the size of the earth relative to moon swings and latitudes

dagnabit!!! missed the chat😢 how are you, Laura? and family? livin' the life, i'm sure😊 most likely the builders of Stonehenge were aware of the solar AND lunar alignments.....people were always looking to the sky, for all sorts of clues.....when to do this or that or when's the baby due or when to make one......charting those things was as important, or more so, as today......they just had to come up with ways to do so....."if we put this rock hear, line it up with that other one and the hill behind, we can always know when to plant our seed"......or something and, hallucinogens have been used by many cultures throughout history so, not surprising to find indications at any ancient site.....would be more surprising to have a lack of evidence for their use....heck, i remember reading about a stash of cannabis sativa seeds dating to 30,000 yrs ago, or something like that....the ancients seem like some pretty hep cats✌❤🕊 anyhoo, i guess i'm done flappin' my jaws.....er.....fingers.....so, a big "howdy do" to all and to all a good day😉

My question exactly. It continues to amaze me how nearly everyone overlooks Precession of the Equinoxes, etc. I am also now (finally) trying to study Western Sidereal Astrology after learning of its existence in high-school decades ago. I want to learn about it because of how it relates to archeoastronomy, but I never had the time or resources until recently.

I feel sad; Stonehenge has been rebuild at least three times in the past century (1901, 1914 and 1958), the last included the lay out of the stones according to what we thought they would be like . . . not where they have been found etc. Stonehenge today is a sick joke scientificaly. (View YT: "Stonehenge: Stones being repositioned during restoration work (1914)" for example or "Stonehenge Rebuild 1958") Again, I feel sad.

The geometry of Stonehenge and the details of the lunar orbit are very well known. here is no need to wait for a lunar standstill to see if Stomehenge has any alignment with it. The whole thing is can easily be encapsulated in a mathematical model that you can run forwards or backwards in time to your heart's content. Nothing new here.

Don't forget Precession. The Sun's motion in the sky loses (falls back) approximately 1 degree every 78 years. Precession of the Equinoxes is a fascinating phenomenon.

False premise. A current event that shows any alignment cannot be attributed to the peoples that built it as you cannot use current events to provide motive for past human endeavors. Nothing about this can prove anything in regards to Stonehenge, attempting to do so is subjective not objective.

Stonehenge has had numerous "restorations" and re-erections of stones over the last few hundred years. Reading significance into the "alignments" is not something to be undertaken lightly. (Forgive the pun: -)
