Ok ok, three months later, I finally finish this crazy project. But hey, at least I finished it! Unlike some of my other projects...So we're finishing up the mini 3D printer by adding a cheap ($15) 3D printing pen! I did some simple prints for the demo, but technically you could do much more complicated prints once you see the basics of how to tweak the gcode. Alright, now that this project's done, I think I'm going to take a nap. And then move on to maybe some simpler projects for a while. Thanks everyone for tuning in!

Why are you using cnc software when you can get a ramps board and use actual 3d printer software

@@Sketchy_Dood I mean he could probably get away with ditching the CNC shield all together and just implementing a custom solution...

great series dude! You are like the only dude who has made this sort of thing that: A. speaks English as his first language, B. isn't the completely silent "Easy DIY build" channels C. explains each part of this process in depth, and provides personal experience and arduino code! 1 question though, is it possible to get your extrusion layers thinner? Or is it because either the structural integrity of the build or the limits of the pen? seemed like your layers are very thicc

I made (sort of) one from the previous series. The issues I had were with the transistor that gave the command to start extruding which I circumvented buy using a relay(!) and the fact that the motor moving the z axis was not powerful enough to lift the pen. I cut the pen in pieces to lighten the load, but eventually I quit the project. I did manage to print some stars one one layer though :)

Same here, i used a counter weight because the pen was to heavy. Sad to see the 3d printer was useless at the end...

Tip for anyone who's doing this project I found that you can generate the g code for the 3d model with sli3r and remove all the words in notepad and select all then copy and download the .nc file from thinkernut and select all then cut and paste the g code and open it on grbl controller you can change all the extruder commands to what thinkernut said but I just turn on the 3d pen and set the speed to what is appropriate

Is there a way to use actual 3D printing software with this but still use a arduino uno with the individual spark fun drivers. Trying to build one.

It mentioned a ramp board, or 3D printing arudino shield in the last few vids, not sure if it would work with an uno you might need a different one

Not at all. The basics are usually the exact same. But any design based on disk drive stepper motors work best on small scales
