UPDATE | FZR1000 Restoration - EP6

Just a quick update as to where I am with the restoration. Before I can start on the engine work, I need to get all the cosmetic stuff done and out of the way.
The fairing brackets and windshield stays were all bent, as were most of the brackets that hold just about everything on. A lot of time spent fixing all that stuff. Nice to see the new subframe and all body panels fitting as they should now.
Sourced a new overflow tank, repaired all the plastic parts, finished the radiator and fan assembly, and repaired the centre fairing and tabs on the side panels.
Got hundreds of parts (bolts, etc) from Impex Japan and a full engine gasket kit from Yambits.
Once all the cosmetic stuff is ready for paint, I'll put it all away and get started on the engine work.
Decal kit is now available at moto-sticker.com in Bulgaria. Great products at great prices. My graphics look nearly identical to the OEM ones and are made from top-quality 3M vinyl.

Love this update Ken, appreciate you sharing it. I could happily watch this for a while, those gauges came out great! I always find gauge clusters really satisfying to restore and they’re such a “looked at” part of the bike when riding. Keep it up!

Thanks Tom!! Sorry it wasn’t more stuff. Just seems like I’ve been toiling away at nothing but little bits in preparation for something bigger. The panels are a train wreck. They look ok from a distance but they’re all broken and the left side was repaired, repainted and cleared. Awful job and hard to get all that off. I was lucky with the gauges - the headlight took three separate assemblies to get one good one, the instruments just two. Thanks for the nice comment and I hope you’re doing well. Cheers!

Thanks!! But it's not done yet! I've got a lot of work to do yet on the panels and I'll probably be painting them before I work on the engine.

I had heard of different brands of plastic paint and this one was available on Amazon for about $20CAD. I bought 2 cans and that’s enough to do all of the plastic parts with lots left over. I tried scratching it and bending the most flexible parts and it’s extremely resilient to marking and doesn’t crack at all. I’m going to repaint the plastic backing on the gauges with it so that all the plastic matches. Really happy with the results!!

Hey Doug!! Busy busy with work - job change - I’m no longer going out to NL anymore. Travelling was killing me. Working in AB now and will have some free time this summer finally and looking forward to getting some miles on the Virago! Great progress! The instruments, plastic parts look like new. Nice job on repairing the upper fairing. Don’t have any experience with that myself, good to see it’s possible to bring them back. I really like how this is going. A question about the stickers, no one actually reproduces these?

Thanks! Someone recommended the fabric paint because it's flexible and won't chip or flake off. The fairings are ABS plastic so they're acetone based. I used a combination of ABS cement and my own concoction of ABS filings and acetone. Yes, RD Decals sells reproduction decals but with the Canadian dollar exchange, duties, shipping & taxes, I'm probably looking at over $500 CAD. I was just shopping around and came across Moto-Sticker in Bulgaria and the selection was amazing...they had hundreds of bikes - except mine. I emailed him and he said that he needed some specific details and that he'd be able to create a full 1987 Genesis set of graphics if I helped him out. I agreed to do all the work to outline and scan the files for him and he sent me a prototype set free of charge. I'm his guinea pig so to speak. The full set are now available on his website for about $150 USD.

Theres also classicmotorcycledecals in the UK, who makes a set for this bike in the red/white/blue and the white/blue colours, they also make all the warning stickers and tyre pressure stickers that have usually peeled off by now.

@@uhtred7860 I searched through Google and didn't find them. Thanks for the info - I'll go check them out now. I've done most of my decal work myself with a local vinyl graphics guy. But these ones ended up being free so I'm pretty happy with what I got.

@@KensWorldRestorations Yeah I’m very interested to see how your decals turn out, it would be nice to get a set for a good price. Classicmotorcycledecals sells on eBay, I’ve bought off him before, he does odd little decals like the on/off/lock on the ignition that always wears off, and sticker on the windscreen telling you how to clean it, switchgear lettering, etc, as well as full sets.

Hello Ken I have been following your restoration of the FZR1000. Love the videos I have the exact same bike ( in blue ). It only has 10,970 miles on it. I am also in the beginning stages of restoration. I stopped riding it when the clutch went out about 10yrs ago. After seeing your YT videos, it inspired me to drag it out of the garage and get going on it. I'm rebuilding the carbs right now. What service manual are you using ( i also sent you an email )

Hey Brian!!! That’s soooo cool! Small world and I’m glad you found my videos. I’ve got the Haynes manual (bought a used paper one) but I also use the IMPEX Japan website for more accurate drawings and assembly views. I’ve noted a number of errors in the shop manual when it comes to drawings and references. I’ve got a couple carb videos but also search for JH-Tech - he’s got some really good videos rebuilding an FZ750 and the carbs are nearly identical and his videos are really good. I’ll be doing the engine work here pretty soon. It mostly needs some top-end work but I’ll also be rebuilding the clutch, water pump and alternator (if required). Glad to see you getting back into the bike!!! I’ll check my email in the next few days - I’m at work and work 3 week shifts.
