Two weeks after a his bicycle accident Larry is back in the studio. We’ll talk about what happened, how he’s feeling, and the doctor’s prognosis. We’ll also discuss from a frugal perspective - what we did right and what we did wrong. There are some very specific ways you can prepare for the unexpected. Financial setbacks can be better navigated through having an emergency fund and a plan of action.

My husband has dealt with medical issues for a number of years. He recently went into cardiac arrest in the ER (Praise Be To God it was there and not at home). He came home this Wednesday, exactly one month from when he went in, after ER, ICU, regular room, and PT/OT in a rehab center. No brain or heart damage. God is So Good! Very thankful that we both still have our husbands with us. God Bless and Prayers continue, Debbie

Larry, it is good to see you☺️ Hope, I can 100% understand everything you said about being an advocate! My husband was very I’ll in 2013 and I did not leave his side for one second. I slept in his room, I wouldn’t leave and they couldn’t force me. 11 days the first time, 8 days the second time. I took care of all the minor things (getting ice chips, changed his bedding, took him to the bathroom, got him in and out of bed to the chair, got him up & walking. The staff was beyond grateful for that. He had a left hip replacement in 2019, same thing, I spent the night & learned the PT with him. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, a reoccurrence in 2022, and I am the door every doctor must pass through lol. I am the keeper of all records, the knower of all medications, tracker of all side effects. It’s just what we do ❤

I’m a retired nurse. I told my patients to keep a binder way back then…2000’s. I also told them to keep copies of blood work and X-rays…not to leave the Dr Office without copies. Then, every office visit take your binder. Many people have 2-3 Dr’s and say “I don’t know what he did, I don’t know what the X-ray said”…..people must take charge of their health!

I live in the UK, and we are very fortunate to have the NHS in times like this, no worrying about insurance costs or paying for ambulances. Yes, people moan about getting Drs appointments when needed (we are very lucky where we live, as we don't have that problem) and waiting lists etc., but when you really need it, it's there. So glad Larry is on the road to recovery and is up and about 🙂

When I first heard about the bike accident, my first thought was, "at least we (all us viewers) don't have to worry whether you two have an emergency fund!" You have some brain injury, similar when I got hit in the head with a metal garage door. It will take some time for you to get as well as you will get. After 14 years, I still have holes in my memory. My speech got much better because of my singing instructor, which the neuropsychologist who tested me didn't think singing would help me to relearn to talk. Your increased sleeping is your brain's response to healing. Sleep whenever you feel sleepy. Your brain is healing. You may have some small problems later, but remember, you may not be exactly the same as you were, but you will reach your NEW normal. I am very happy that you two are getting through this so well. Thank you for letting others know what to expect in a medical emergency.

Have to say- how good is God and omnipresent, providing that helmet ahead of time. I had a friend that talked about the worst day she’d had in years, she came home and found she’d received a handmade quilt, for no reason, from an old friend, and that she felt so loved on by God. I pointed out that God prepared that friend to work on it weeks in advance for this hard day. So amazing having a God that exists outside of time. ❤

Congratulations on your son's marriage. My thoughts and prayers are with you Larry. A medical binder is so important. I am a caregiver for my daughter who has an incurable lung/heart disease and we created a one page medical history with all her doctor's; emergency contacts; prescriptions she's on; her medical conditions; surgery dates... she is on IV medication and so the dosage and such of that is on the sheet; insurance information as well; also don't forget any OTC medications you may be taking. If/when my daughter is in the hospital I will stay with her for the duration and she is an adult. I carry this sheet in a binder with all her latest (from the year) after visit summaries; any tests; the power of attorney I have for her etc.

There were times when the medical team did not have correct information, or my husband didn't. I did, however, have to leave his side regularly. It sounds like you did a great job. On the therapy, you will be discharged from PT. if you want to pick it up later, his doctor will need to write another order for it. You get so many per year. I had many prayer warriors, which ii was grateful for.

I agree with the binder, and do an abbreviated version using plastic photo sleeve....with a printout of medicine allergies at the top in red, my medicines, doctors, pharmacy, insurance cards, ect. I keep this with me all the time in my purse with a tab at the top labeled: Medical Info. I've had times where I needed to go to urgent care or the hospital and I feel so bad I can't think clearly and hand the info to the doctor, nurse, or EMT. They appreciate having info put together.

With the brain injury, did Larry get a speech cognitive eval? Speech therapy helps with cognition and brain exercises post brain injury--he could go to outpatient appointments for this service. I am so glad Larry is doing well.

Medical records, i.e., charts, were much more accurate prior to the advent of EHR, IMHO. I worked in healthcare back in the days of paper charts. Now, all it takes is one wrong click and you have a wrong diagnosis and you're taking a medication you have never taken. People really need to keep track of what is in their medical record, if possible. They had me positive for HIV at one point, which was completely erroneous. Anyhow, very happy to see that Larry is making progress!

I was in the hospital in 2017, for about 14 days, and the nursing staff were ANGELS!! I felt so well taken care of and when I got out of the hospital, I sent both sets of staff (was at two different hospitals) thank you cards and heard that it was so appreciated! Thank goodness Larry is on the mend!!

My helmet saved my life. I was at a stand still and my stepson’s bike hit my from behind and our wheels locked together as he caught my wheel’s quick release. The shattered my shoulder, one pin and 8 screws later over a few months I healed. It was 4 years ago. I have been on bike tours and etc. since then. I still can’t go fast down any hill, but I can enjoy being on a bike. A few things I learned along the way; stay in physical therapy, get support with PTSD if you even think you might need it, and be ok with just getting through a day. Hope care for the caregiver is also needed. Please look up what you need to do for yourself as a caregiver. Also know the an accident in the road can cause insurance confusion. My insurance company tried to put it against my car. You my have to talk to medical records to see how they coded the accident. Thank you both for the video. Larry it is ok to just rest. Take the pain medicine, recover, be kind to yourself.

Praise the Lord. I am so glad to hear youre on the mend, Larry. Continued prayer for healing and rest. My husband was in a minor car accident last november that could have ended so much worse. We blcked out or fell asleep at the wheel and veered through uncoming traffic, and then into a tree. Thabkfully he did not hit the car that was coming just a second later...she had a couple of young kids in the car with her, and im just so thankful that God spared them from any involvement beyond calling an ambulance for him, and thankful that He spared my husband from possibly living with the guilt of unintentionally hurting someone.
