Great video guys. Looks to me like La Vita is a total. The kite system sounds very interesting for your cat. Loved seeing Foxy running around there in the background.

So La Vita is already stripped of all parts and was being gutted when I left Ocean World earlier this week. One of the other boats in the yard lucked out as the mast was a good fit for them and they’d been looking for one for some time. Believe they bought the boat outright, took the mast and the rest was headed for The used parts place in Luperon. Sad but a good lesson.
@BarefootTravels2 жыл бұрын
Yes those are friends of ours. We connected them fir the mast! It us sad but at least it has a use now! Are you happy to be floating again?

Pity about La Vita...and how a little foresight would've prevented so much of the damage. (I'm thinking specifically about not clearing everything out, while she lay on the beach, and access was easy...only to have a shirt get sucked into the bilge pump that was keeping her afloat....) All the best in your travels...

Such a shame that the recovery process did so much damage to La Vita. The kite sail is a good idea. What about a DIY kite project. Now there’s a challenge. I like the idea of all electric. Expensive though. I really like the Silent series of yachts. The Silent 60 is a dream boat of mine. The designer of them started out by retrofitting their boat to see what worked, and that lead to the design of their yachts.
@BarefootTravels2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Once we looked into the kite system we found them on the silent yachts 60 foot. Why not do something similar but with a smaller size vessel right!

It generates ten times the power per given area Compared to a trad Sail. I also suggest you look at diesel electric drive with a battery buffer. But the single ICE motor powers a generator that powers your electric motors full power if needed. ie at night or in cloud if required this is the way quite a few yatch builders are going. The E motors have regen under sail. One generator but you keep two electric motors with a 🐱 and its more fuel efficient as the iCE engine runs at a steady optimal generator speed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pd2dY91ercrYYKs.html Solar yachts and Windelo 55 and HH 44 . A few comments (1) Kite vs mast with sails or unconventional vs conventional. If you can afford it, I would stick with conventional- mast with sails. At some point in time you will stop sailing and will want to sell your catamaran. What % of potential buyers will want/prefer a kite propelled cat vs a mast/sail propelled cat. Unless there is some dramatic change in the cruising world, I think 25% or less so you may have eliminated 75% of potential buyers from considering your boat and it may sit unsold on the hard or on mooring ball for some time. (2) Electric - the biggest cost for going electric is usually the battery bank. I'd stick with the diesels for now and wait for sodium-ion battery development which due to its abundance on earth should be way cheaper than lithium. This plus improvements in PV efficiency and electric motor systems efficiency and lower costs, may make electric viable for cruisers.

I commented in haste, before you mentioned the kite idea. For the electrical system to work you’ll need a heap of solar, wind perhaps and also a gen set or perhaps a hybrid diesel electric motor. Anyway I do like the idea of an electric boat, just expensive.

I think it's dangerous to have only electric motors withought sails.From all the boats IV seen ,they ring every mile possible out of the sails and use the electric motors sparingly.30miles max on elec motors and any trans Atlantic their can be days withought wind.Allso and be seen were they lost all power through getting the electrics wet.Good luck whatever you do and stay safe 👍

Going electric for small distances and otherwise sailing is something entirely different than electric as main drive. It is still expensive in all components, much more than a mast and rigging, but technically possible, because much less energy must be stored and produced. Why not start with a kite and keep the engines for now?
@BarefootTravels2 жыл бұрын
That is kind of what we are thinking. Start with the kite and change out one engine at a time when we can afford to
@ukandrew2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Kite sail propulsion, brilliant idea Davy. Didn’t know this tech existed or was so advanced. Looked at this : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sL90rZNptL-7Zps.html Shows a very smart system. As you say, airflow becomes smoother and more reliable the higher you go. So having your sail, as it were, at altitude rather than at sea level, should be more efficient. Would be interesting to see the math and also how large a sail/kite you could reasonably operate. Could be as they say, the Skys the limit 😄A fully automated Kite/Sail system would make a lot more sense than remote control, saying that, remote control would be fun. Maybe not for 8 hours +, though. This project would definitely separate your channel from many of the others and would be very interesting to see the journey, install, and operation. Maybe hold off the electric motors until the sail/kite system is up and running? I’ll definitely be coming back to see this project comes off. Good luck Davy & Erica. Looking forward to this idea.
