Looking good leon, i like the idea of different sized bases to represent different command levels, for ease i just kept all mine on 30mm bases, and will put the commanders name and level on the name bases i've 3d printed. :)

Nice idea on the command base size. The issue about going ‘no orders’ for several turns is an interesting one, but I must admit that I sit on the side of chaos and the hand of restraint always being placed on the gamers shoulder ….. so I quite like the failed order system, but think it should be a bit weaker. If tweaking, I would probably allow it to occur naturally, but give re-rolls if any fails on 2 consecutive turns or auto give them 1 order. I know it is part of the system that divides player opinion. I tend to paint two bases at a time, I should do 3 really, but anything more does feel tedious, to me at least.
@leont66wargaming31
@leont66wargaming31 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Norm. I do sometimes like the chaos of failed orders, great for pick up games where a few beers are involved, adds to the merriment lol. However if I want to play a bit more competitively I do find it a bit annoying and frustrating, as it happens far to much. I’ve found using a slightly higher lvl command helps with less fails and the limited re-rolls means you can’t use them all the time but have to be selective with them. Yep I’m finding trying to paint a whole Brigade at a time is actually taking me longer than just doing them one at a time, as I get bored quicker, so don’t paint for long lol

@@leont66wargaming31 I am working on a modification of Black Powder to include a card driven system of leaders and their specific attributes. Still in the early stages. I have begun my rebasing by; 3 figures on a round base for Army Commanders, 2 figures on a round base for Corps Commanders, 1 figure on a round base for Division commanders, and 1 mounted figure on squares bases for Bde and/or Rgt commanders as needed. I like your ideas for commanders, including the relation of figures and number of rerolls. Your bases look great. I have just started added some additional terrain like a broken/loose cannon barrels. Looking forward to your continued progress! Be well.

Great update. I like your C&C idea, adds some variety, plus I think it's better overall than just choosing command levels yourself as, unless you're playing a specific battle where there was some evidence of the command capability, in order to be fair you just end up defaulting to 8 or all 8 with one 9 each etc. Meh. Overall, the two things I'm not keen on with BP are 1) too frequent command failures and 2) Disorder caused on a 6. Yes command failures happened and units got badly disrupted by fire and / or combat. The problem for me is that these were arguably more the exception than the norm and it seems to happen way more often in BP games than one might expect historically. Even if in certain armies it did happen often, we're playing a game that we want to enjoy. Not just stand there for 2 turns when your entire army just stands there. I've been pondering the same type of amendments as you for my Epic Napoleonic. What I think I might trial is: 1) As you suggest, everyone starts at an 8. 2) Roll a D6 and on a 1, that commander drops to a 7. 2, 3 or 4 he stays at an 8, 5 or a 6 and he goes to a 9. then Rolling a 5 or 6 (or maybe even just a 6), he goes to a 10. 3) For command: Level 7 (no re-rolls); Level 8 (1 re-roll); Level 9 (1 re-roll at +1); Level 10 (2 re-rolls with max one in any given phase, not sure about that yet, not allowing two in the move phase may hamper a Level 10 too much). For disorder I think adopting what seems to be a common house rule - on the attacker (shooting or combat) rolling a 6 you only have a chance of becoming disordered) but you only become disordered if you then roll a 1 with any of your Saves.
@leont66wargaming31
@leont66wargaming31 Жыл бұрын
Some great idea. I agree about the disorder. Happens way to often. I think the save idea is a good one. I might adapt it have it occur one a1-2. Plus you can always use a re-roll on it. All the ideas will definitely make the game flow better and as you said, stop you from standing around doing nothing for a couple of turns. I’ve found increasing the command lvls really helps. Hadn’t thought of the annoying disorder on a 6 lol. So I’ll definitely be adding that in
@Edward-Plantagenet
@Edward-Plantagenet Жыл бұрын
@@leont66wargaming31 Yes, becoming Disordered on a 1 or 2 is another option. you can always drop it back to a 1 if it still happens too often. I find that with Disorder, too many battalions just end up not being able to get orders, way more than one would expect in a real battle. 6-8 Disordered units is not uncommon. It really interrupts the flow and ends up just being random chaos IMO, as opposed to command friction. The other thing we've been pondering is command distances. I find 12" a bit too short (we play in 15mm and use straight inch to cm so 12 cm for us) and leads to excessive bunching of units simply because you can't deploy as you want and retain control. I know that's the whole idea and I'm not thinking of much of a change but maybe 15 cm. I often find brigades deployed in a cube formation (2 front / 2 back) simply to accommodate the command distances, even getting 3 in line can be difficult. That in itself then leads to all sorts of problems. It doesn't help the common criticism of BP where folks say every game feels like a game of BP, mot a game of Napoleonics etc. Command movement we might modify too, 48 for mounted commanders is an awfully long way and can lead to not needing to be bothered that much about placement. making that 24 or even 36 cm may require more careful planning. Yes Napoleon COULD move out the the left flank of the army but it would take him some time to get over to the right flank if things were going pear shaped. As it is, it's just zap zap done. Teleporting Napoleon.
@leont66wargaming31
@leont66wargaming31 Жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting thought about command distances? Especially if you have large brigades of 5 units or fast moving troops like cavalry. 12” is definitely not enough. I agree it just leads to units all being bunched up. I’ll give 18” a go and -1 for distances over 18” up to 36”. Then -2 over 36”. I tend to use my own rules for Napoleonic wargaming. So I already have these rules in place for them. But will definitely try these ideas for BP ACW and Pike and Shotte.
@Edward-Plantagenet
@Edward-Plantagenet Жыл бұрын
@@leont66wargaming31 Exactly. Command and Control mechanisms should enable historical deployment, not hamper it! I have a feeling that 18 is what we will go to as well (IF we stick with BP), going from 12 to 15 is likely to only tinker with what is quite a significant problem. We use Black Powder heavily modified with many of the Nap supplement special rules and numerous house rules (such as those we have discussed) but my word, it took a HELL of a lot of work to get it to a playable state that feels anything like Napoleonic. Much as I like BP (probably once liked is a more accurate term now) the sheer amount of work we had to put into it, along with cost of supplements, has pushed me more towards rule sets that have been specifically written for Napoleonic warfare, in my case General D'Armee (v2 nearing release, the author has a very good ACW rule set too, Pickett's Charge), and even Soldiers of Napoleon. That the rules are all in one book, (a book a third of the size of BP and devoid of clutter text) and are easy to reference is so refreshing! TOTALLY unlike Warlord with rules buried in pages of faux Edwardian flavour text, combined with abysmal proof reading and a largely useless index! I've also seen so many times people make comments along the lines of every game of Black Powder just feels like a game of Black Powder, regardless of the armies being played or the period. I'm slowly coming round to the same way of thinking! ☹
@leont66wargaming31

I think that’s the thing, you’ve hit the nail on the head. No matter what period you play it just ends up being BP rather than the specific period you want to be playing. I don’t know if you’d be interested but I use my own rules for Napoleonic wargaming. I made a series of videos on them. I have tweaked them a bit since making the videos. Here’s a link to the playlist kzfaq.info/sun/PLE3mPEqNnrT8Bb3oxQ1oazmttc_LHVy_B I’ve been watching a few bat reps for General D’armee and agree it’s much better than BP for Napoleonics. I’ve heard Pickett’s charge is good too
