This is an updated version of the video captured with OBS instead of EZ Grabber, from what I believe is the original version of the tape rather than a copy. The original upload is now unlisted here: • OBSOLETE! LINK TO BETT...

I found a VHS video cassette from August 20, 1992, when I recorded, via a full size VHS video recorder that you had to rest on your shoulder, a runaway boxcar that went through the town.
I've converted it, and after 31 years it's a bit rough to say the least. I'm not sure how much of this is age, or the fact that VHS is 480 on a good day. But the event was recorded, and if you squint really hard and set your expectations for 30 plus years ago...it's still pretty rough.
I have been experimenting with some AI upconverters, but there's just not a lot to work with. If I can find a way to clean it up more, then I promise to share.
Still it was a pretty wild event. As I recalled it eventually derailed around Dickson City, PA. As I look back, I don't even remember how we found out it was coming.

30 years ago we had heavy, bulky cameras with electromechanical systems that allowed tracking to be influenced by vibration and gyroscopic forces. If you shake and can't keep subjects in frame, that's on you. You need some practice. Today we have small, lightweight, entirely solid-state cameras with software image stabilization. Not only are people incapable of rotating their phone by 90 degrees, it's become an accepted form of incompetence, with entire websites catering to the malpractice.

Just wanted to comment that my uncle filmed this, he did the best he could. He does have some medical issues that hindered him from being the most steady. But he couldn’t miss the opportunity to film this. He passed a few years after the video and honestly being able to see something like that and have the video was a story you couldn’t not hear from him. Lol Thanks for the positivity everyone!

Also no, image stabilization back in the day.... However you could have used some modern upscaling and stabilization software before uploading

Today is getting harder to find guys that will know or remeember VHS (or Hi8) and the limitations of those days. 30 yeas ago you were fortunate if you had a camera that could record video and people would focus on the content rather than the quality, because it wasnt that great, Just enough to get things done. Great catch !

as a brakeman doing way freight work, it wasnt unusual for us to kick a car down a siding and then run around it on the main line, and catch it, thereby placing it on the other end of the engine. sometimes I'd man the switch, and other times I would ride on the car and use the hand brake after 200 yards. never had one get completely away from us, that'd be unprofessional.

This is an old VHS machine or Hi8, pure analog, no estabibilization, tape and mechanism was very sensible to vibration, .. this is why it looses tracking. But the capture is good enough to reflect the event.
