The new updates include Bing Maps, a resolution slider to adjust detail, and a streamlined user interface.
SketchUp's Add Location gives real-world site context for your real-world project. Geo-locate your model for accurate shadow studies, and import satellite images to show existing context.
This SketchUp tutorial was done in SketchUp Pro 2022.

This is an amazing feature, I actually discovered it myself last night when I started my Pro 30-day trial.

I did the near map for property on the slopes of the Superstition mountains. The resolution is very good to where I can see objects like rocks a few inches wide. The altitude and topography data seems the same as google earth. This has been very useful for design as I am positioning the house between large saguaro cacti which are not being relocated. The topography data is useful for calculating the dirt I to excavate as I can raise or lower the elevation of the foundation. I have a 6% grade and require a septic system so this is useful for ensuring everything goes downhill. It cost money for this map but for the twenty something I paid it was well worth it!

Incredible. I wish NearMap had data where I am, luckily my terrain is simple enough that the low-res terrain should work fine.

I'm in France. in Marseille Digital globe is outdated, photos date early 2019 (the state of several construction sites are a good tell) Bing map looks better sure, but photos are a solid 5 year old, I can see buidlings under construction that were finished late 2017. no nearmap outside of the US as far as I can tell. These last projects, and that's what I've been teaching my students as well, I tend to work with Cadmapper + screenshots from googlemap placed and scaled by hand - if a photo context is actually needed.

I use the geo location feature quite a bit and mostly love it. However, I need to do a lot of mountain ranges and it’s very time consuming to do it without having some sort of outline of the tiles I have already imported. I’ve wasted many hours needing to go back and redo the imports due to being off kits a little bit and having gaps. Please make this feature happen for us some day!!

Asron , great video but suggest you either add a breif piece on how to actually align and set your model house etc, down into terrain. Also are existing vegetation and/or physical structures actually shown in 3 d ?

Maybe you have covered this elsewhere: I use Google Maps to determine the property lines of my sites. Then I export the property lines to Google earth to make presentation images of my properties in context. I need the property lines to register my sketchup model accurately on the topography. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks. Could you perhaps also do a piece using Heightmapper to get a more exact topography?

What if you live in the middle of nowhere and the area you live isn't validateable via the USPS? GPS doesn't work in my area. Can you specify one or more GPS coordinates in Sketchup? As an example, I own land and know the GPS coordinates for each corner of my property. Can I use this information instead to obtain terrain data to import into a sketchup model?

Interesting... Once you have the aerial map imagery downloaded, can you manipulate it on all three axes? * Can I take the straight line of a railroad and bend it into a curve? * Can I take the imagery and compress some segments at one ratio and other segments at different ratios? As a railroad modeler, I see an opportunity to take a sliver of reality and manipulate it to fit the space I have to model in. In other words, I want to take a 200' to 500' wide by a 300-mile-long strip of reality and place it into my given space with the ease of a single "wet spaghetti noodle" placed artistically on a plate. Is this possible, or am I stuck doing it by hand?
@jonomoles
@jonomoles Жыл бұрын
The answer to your last question is yes but you could at least be stuck with doing it by hand with a good photo editing package. Depending on your skills, this process could still be somewhat automated. I would recommend trying a couple of miles first!

Hey how can I take my drone straigh down shot, I know how to scale it and now want to drop driectly on to the surface so I have the best current image? I used to be able to use the paint bucket but that seems to no longer work. Any help would be greatly apprecaited

Hi From Australia, have been using Geolocation a lot during “Dream-up” sessions for a master plan on my waterski lake near Bundaberg, Queensland. I can send you some of my feeble, I have a lot of fun doing them, Unfortunately the terrain in digital globe is not good enough so I just use it to place buildings on top of to get an idea of distances to features, very happy with what I can do with limited skills… I have a request for a program… Please, please DRAPE A TERRESTRIAL GLOBE SPHERE… apart from looking at ski lakes in sat imagery I really like globes, would be cool to make my own in Sketchup 🙂🌎🌍🌐🌏

How do I geolocate a large area to include a foothill mountain range? The number of tiles are very limited. I have sketchup 2023 pro. I'm designing a house with a view and want to know the sightlines to the hills and distant mountain. Can anyone help?

This tutorial shows a workflow that should work for you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrmWnbakq5rDgXU.htmlsi=7bo6pxRYETLbOT4-. We've successfully used this method for terrain ~400,000 hectares in size. However, if you have access to the site, adding a panoramic photo backdrop may be easier (and less CPU-intensive.) This video shows you how: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jq50aqiJr7SunJs.html

LOVE it. Frustrating and unfortunate that the 30-day free trial doesnt allow the use of the higher res Bing data... I'm trying to sell my employer on a paid SketchUp Pro license. He's a civil engineer who has a harder time seeing the potential that this powerful and intuitive 3D modelling program has to offer. I need all the help I can get.

Bing only offers low to medium resolution imagery (it has nothing to do with being on a trial). That's the best their service can offer!

@@aarondietzen2995 Speaking of scale, I tried the other day to create a basic Halo ring (i.e. hundreds of kilometers in diameter), but SU had issues rendering the whole thing. Got any tips for dealing with such large, 1:1 scale models?
@aarondietzen2995
@aarondietzen2995 Жыл бұрын
SketchUp was designed to model building sized geometry. It does not live drawing things that are significantly larger (or smaller) than that. No tip there… that is something you would have to draw at a smaller scale!
