UpdownAir Gen 2 Review: Does The New Gen 4 Tire Inflation System Improve? Let’s Do A Timed Test!

Looking back, I gave the Gen 1 UpDownAir unit a decent review-but did it really deserve it? The more I thought about it, the more I realized it had more shortcomings than I originally claimed-apparently I was blinded by convenience. Seeing a "new" and updated Generation 2 version come out, I quickly jumped on it and swapped the systems out. Did UpDownAir really improve on the design, or will I still be waiting on the side of the road as my tires fill up?
The products mentioned can be found on amazon:
UpDownAir Gen 2: amzn.to/3euAUqW
Coyote Deflators: amzn.to/3etyb12
Voswitch Programmable Switch Panel: amzn.to/3qCnQlQ
Tire Pressure Gauge: amzn.to/30wLq8P
Extreme Outback Compressor: www.extremeout...
Now it should be noted that UpDownAir says to raise the regulator pressure a little bit if you have pulsing of the compressor (as shown in the video) but the Magnum air compressor pumps out so much air that I would have to set the regulator at nearly full output to prevent that. Doing so would make the Updownair/central air controller useless-I’d essentially have my air compressor just hooked up to the tires and it wouldn’t automatically shut off anywhere close to the psi I want.
It might seem ridiculous, but removing 8 valve stem air caps and going around and hooking up each tire whip took longer than expected. That extra minute or two could have been used actually airing up the tires rather than walking around and hooking everything up.
I did not show the unit speed for airing down, as it took a lot longer for me to inflate that I simply forgot! You’ll have to trust me, but it takes a lot longer to deflate the tires vs using coyote/staun deflators. If not, ask around-someone out there has the Updownair setup and they’ll tell you the same thing-it takes forever! In between the video when I change inflation tests, I disconnect the air whips and hook up my Coyote deflators instead. When using the controller for airing down all 4 tires, the air coming out of the controller felt like the air coming out of 1 tire, not 4! You’d think there would be a massive blast of air coming out of the air down valve, but there just wasn’t.
Thanks to Bensound for the music!

Thanks for the honest and thorough review on this system. I've thought about buying one of these type of systems in the past, but it isn't the first time I have heard this uneveness in pressure. Might also have to due with weight distribution in the truck as well as how it sits on the ground. I'm too anal with the tire pressures being spot on. Plus I run 45 front and 35 rear on my Power Wagon on the road.

In a lab or a stack of wheels on the ground with no vehicle weight the air would be evenly distributed but once on the vehicle all bets are off. Even then how you load up for the trip and what side of the rack your box is on or your food is stored will affect the weight distribution and therefore tire pressure. We are only talking a few PSI here. Many lift kits even have different strength springs for different corners of a vehicle to keep it flat. I don't see a practical way to get equalized pressure across tires with an unequal loading. You would need a separate line for each corner with its own regulator or valve.

I think certain vehicles just work better for this (more evenly weighted?) than others-I felt the same way as far as load distribution in real life. I switched to a single tire filling system, a little more monitoring but much faster and very accurate.

The great problem with air or fluid are angle, so T connection and 90° transitions dont allow speed but make flow like a slot! Better you diy a home made cable with Y split cable, give a try ...

You paid for convenience with the system and all you got was a big hassle. Go figure... Maybe up down will see this and make some improvements. Can't wait to see what you have in the next vid 🧐

In theory the tires should equalize, but weight distribution will play a part of course. I guess this system wasn't designed to be perfect. I think they were designed to get you home after a trail. Problem is people are lazy and decided they just wanted to do them all at once. Now we want perfect psi. Next we'll wonder why these systems didn't come with chairs and beer.

That system is terrible. Way faster to do 1 tire at a time with the compressor and a long single line to reach each tire.
