On today’s episode, we are joined by a Premier League great who started off in non-league football and went on to become PFA Player of the Year.
Les Ferdinand enjoyed a successful and varied career playing for clubs such as QPR, Tottenham Hotspur as well as being part of the ‘great entertainers’ under Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United. After retirement he returned to West London and took up the role as Director of Football at QPR, becoming the first British black player to hold that position.
After stepping down last year ‘Sir Les’ as he is affectionately known joins the show to discuss his unconventional route to superstardom, opening up on his time at Tottenham and Newcastle, his turbulent tenure at QPR and the issues black former players are facing to find jobs in football.

Les was brilliant. Great in the air. Fast. Strong. An excellent finisher. He first scored a hatful of goals in the 1992/93 season at QPR then continued to score prolifically for quite several seasons. His partnership at QPR with Kevin Gallen and then his move to Newcastle enabled Les to show us what a superb forward he truly was. I don't care about footballers' colour and I never have cos it isn't interesting what colour a person's skin is. It's what is inside a person's heart and inside their head that is important in a person. Not their skin colour. That's about as interesting as what height they are. I don't think hardly any supporters in 2024 in stadiums do either. Good.

Newcastle fan here. From what I have learned over years & heard Les say. Newcastle thought £6 million for a 30 year old was too good to turn down plus we'd be ok with Shearer/Asprilla. But Shearer got injured so they asked Les (who never wanted to leave) to stay. Les felt disrespected so went to Spurs. With Ginola, I've been told he wanted to leave and go to London. I do know Barcelona wanted him a season prior but we didn't sell him. Kenny Dalgish ruined us for 4 years by dismantling the team selling 3 of our best players in Les, Ginola, Beardsley plus Robbie Elliott and John Beresford & later Asprilla. And he replaced them with past it Barnes, Rush, & flops likes Andreas Andersson, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Pistone, Des Hamilton & his son Paul.

@@claudeanderson5966 BLM in America claims being punctual and on time is white supremacy - unfortunately, real racism is overshadowed by nonsense these days. John Barnes was the best player I ever saw with my own eyes and I was thirteen when we signed him. I was a winger too at the time. This picture of me was me around my twelfth birthday. I was a winger in the school team and in a Sunday League team that was managed by my stepdad. Did I notice Barnesy was black? Did I notice Eddie Murphy was black when we were watching his 'Raw' video with the guy who managed our Sunday League team that I was a schoolboy winger in before my stepdad took over? Yes. Did it matter? No. I'm from Liverpool and I'm lower-working-class. We didn't move to a council house until I was fifteen. So I tend to look at the world more class-wise.

Its not just a race thing though , we have women who are now commentating on football matches that shouldn't be doing the job. There are male ex players who would do the job better with more passion and knowledge who haven't got the job because they are male ! I am f/male and I find it embarrassing. I remember Darren Ambrose saying on talkSPORT once something to the effect of: "I've never been in negotiations over a move to another club and thought WOW I would love to play in this stadium every week!! A stadium is a stadium and I can only speak for myself but the size of a football stadium never had any impact or baring on where ever I ended up during my career." And I'm the same way with shirt numbers. Personally I couldn't give a toss what squad number I was given at a football club. The opportunity to play professional football would of been MORE THAN ENOUGH for me. I think AC Milan sat down with Andriy Shevchenko like YEARS ago and offered him €5 million to give up the no. 7 shirt because they were going after David Beckham at the time and they wanted to use the fact that he could have it himself during negotiations. UTTER MADNESS when you actually think about that!!

Les Ferdinand should have never given his no 9 to Shearer. They disrespected him.

I respect Simon clearly has educated himself in the area of race since he sat with Barnes.

@@fakeitalian1483 - John Barnes could never talk crap to my ears. Even if somebody rigged me up like in A Clockwork Orange and specifically ordered Barnesy to speak the most nonsensical drivel I've ever had the misfortune to hear REALLY loud in my face repeatedly, I'd love every word. Why? John Barnes was the best player that I ever saw with my own eyes and I was thirteen when we bought Barnesy. I was a winger myself when I played, so loving JB was entirely natural from a footballing perspective. And John Barnes is a nice, affable fellow when you see him on LFC TV. Hehehe. Joe Gomez has just been on LFC TV with news of a new baby boy.

*The last time Joe Gomez went to train with England, he got an injury so severe it nearly ended his career. It was 2020 and just days earlier Jordan Pickford had assaulted Virgil Van Dijk and ended his season just five games in. That left us with one centre-back. Joel Matip. Out of 38 PL games in the 2020-21 season, Joel Matip started 6 and completed 3. Twice he was withdrawn at halftime and once after sixty minutes. I'd prefer Gareth Southface to leave Joe here on Merseyside...

@@an-alternative-contrarian5047 - Agreed that Joe Gomez is better off just playing for Liverpool right now and that the news of his baby boy on that LFC TV program was good. Joe has been good lately and after last season's poor form, it is great to see cos Joe is a smashing guy. He talked about reading self-help books during the LFC TV show and gave us a little detour into his literary brain.

It was nice that LFC TV gave us a literary detour into one of LFC's black footballer's brains. I could imagine that when Jordan Henderson joined Liverpool he might have somehow previously imagined that Mr Rush by Roger Hargreaves which is one of the Mr Men series of books was about Ian Rush. Hehehe. I'd like to know more about Joe's bookshelf.

If it wasn’t for racist managers, England would have won the World Cup again by now. The amount of players England has had is unbelievable. I remember one of the Italian players saying, after beating England, when once again, Venables, didn’t pick Les and shearer had drawn a blank, saying that they were all dreading playing against Les because of his areal ability and were relieved when he wasn’t on the team sheet and never even come on.
