Upgrade your old Dyna gauges - Dakota Digital combo gauge & easy wiring

In this video I show you how to easily wire up a Dakota Digital MLX 3000 Speedo/Tach combo gauge (or even Autometer or almost any universal gauges).
Also, I use an 06+ harness which you can still buy, it will give you LED indicator lights and it plugs right into the factory harness.
My main focus throughout this video is to make the wiring painless and keep everything clean and factory like.
This video mainly applies to 1999-2003 Harley Dyna FXD, FXDX, and FXDXT models.
(In 2004+ Harley switched the communication signal for the gauges to a BUS digital signal for those years, so you will need to use a gauge that will support that. And yes Dakota Digital and Koso both make plug-n-play gauges for those years.)

I originally bought a koso hd multifunction gauge, it wasn’t compatible with 99-03 dynas due to no speed sensor wiring in the gauge to wire to. Don’t waste the time on koso. Spend the extra money on the Dakota digital and is the easiest install with the help of this video!

Koso wouldn’t work on the older stuff but for the newer bikes it’s pretty badass I think. I’m running a Koso on a 2017 Sportster, a sweeping tach is nice to have.

It’s custom ordered from Saddlemen with tuck-roll using gripper material for front. MyGarageVentura had this one in stock a while back

Could this be done with a 1997 dyna superglide fxd ? I was able to do it with the fuel gauge with some differences than yours

Good stuff man, glad you got the fuel gauge working. And yes this Dakota digital gauge will work with older bikes as well. You just have to figure out wiring by looking at your factory wiring diagram.. it’s seems intimidating but is simple once you get working on it

I have a 2004 FXD, it does not have a tach, will I be able to wire the tach up to work or will my harness not have a tach wire in it? Also I seen the numbers across the top 1 2 3 4 5 6 are those gear indicators and do they work?

You won't be able to use this exact gauge..this video mainly applies to pre-04 bikes. The numbers at the top are the tach (bar graph style). In 2004 Harley switched to Serial BUS digital signal to the gauges. Dakota and Koso both make gauges that are plug-n-play for 04+ FXDs and they gave a tach built in but you may have have to add 1 wire as it may be blank on your connector.

Wait, you mean to say you got the pre 04 Harley to a combo speedo and Tach ? They have a gauge on 04 and up but they say it cant work for 03 and earlier harleys

Yup.. there’s a version of this gauge that’s basically a “universal” type and that’s how you can wire it up for the older ones. The 04-11 style is a plug-n-play that needs a digital BUS signal; very different from pre-04 bike wiring

Actually pretty easy to mount and wire up with no extra parts. Some fairings have slight clearance issues. Otherwise, brightest and best pattern light on the road period!
