I finally decided to splurge and get the planer that I have wanted for years, the DeWalt 735x! I have used it now a few times and wanted to share some tips on dust collection, what I learned about installing a helical head, and its overall use!
I bought this planer from Busy Bee Tools. Although their advertised price is over $900, I only paid $669 for the planer and $120 for the tables and blades! Here is the link:

here is where the idea came from for the dust collection, and likely what I will be upgrading mine to: • Easy to Make Dust Coll...

A lot of years ago I bought a 734 and used it a lot! It did the job at the time and gave me great results. During downsizing I sold it and went through several other lunchbox planers with mixed results till I found a 735 for a good price on kijiji. It worked well but I was using more hard maple in my work and found the blade wear becoming a problem. That and the nasty screaming noise it produced and the lack of power caused me to look around for an alternative. I found an old Delta from the Invicta series for cheap; sold the 735 for a good profit and never looked back. The Delta (2 HP, same capacity as the 735) will take a full 1/8" bite in wide hard maple without breaking a sweat. Noise level is comfortable and blades can be resharpened. The 735 is a good machine for hobby use and the dust blower is a big help but please recognize its limitations.

Absolutely there are some limitations to it, but it is perfect for hobbyists. I also added aftermarket high end blades instead of the DeWalt brand and they made a huge difference. Thanks for watching!

Btw whoever told you that you’re “not supposed to hook a shop vac up” at the store was wrong. They probably meant that you don’t HAVE to hook one up because it has a blower already in the dust chute, BUT, that will only get you so far, I’d still recommend hooking it up to a dust collector or shop vac (pulling is better than pushing).

They had mentioned something about the shop vac not keeping up, but good to know for sure. I may actually try it to see what happens 😁

From what I've seen on other KZfaq channels, the difference is hooking up to a shop vac and a dust collector. The shop vac won't keep up with it but a dust collector will. I recently got this planer and love it. I first hooked it up to my dust collector and it worked fine, but filled up the can fast! I watched several KZfaq channels to see what others were doing and ended up getting the Rockler dust bag and hooking it up to that and it works great. Thanks for your video and I'm a new subscriber! 😊

I love my DeWalt planer, but I think the dust collection fan on the inside is a little to strong. The first time I used it it blew the Dustopper off my bucket LOL. I really like your setup. Subscribed.

Thanks! I ended up adding a dust bag inside as well to minimize the dust even more! It is a powerful blower, crazy that it blew the lid off the bucket!

I noticed how much air flow there was at power up. Now was the dust I saw fly out at the T-shirt from inside the bin or was that something that had settled on top. Just a suggestion but how about another piece of t-shirt on topside of the frame to reduce that ,maybe even a removable slide type filter. Nice to know someone other than me goes nuts on a weekend. Enjoy the new machine looks like you have some fun ahead of you.

Hi John, I have lots of fun ahead for sure (kid in a candy store lol)! The dust actually came out in-between the can and top, had an open spot. I will be redoing the dust collection, may try a foam door seal around the can so I can compress it a bit to seal properly. I will also at some point upgrade the filter too, thanks for the tips!

Be careful of the fine dust leaving the T-shirt and negatively affecting your lungs. You might want to get at least a DIY air purifier close to the planer when you use it.

Thanks for the tip! I did think of this and in talking with another woodworker I may upgrade the T-shirt to an actual filter. Until then, I will wear my RZ Mask when using the planer 😁

@@TimberDesignsI had the RZ mask and it was terrible. At first I thought it was my face, but beyond all of the sponsored endorsements from YTers, it really has a bad fit. There are accounts of people using it and getting very sick after sanding a ton with it. Get the 3M with a true rubber seal. There's a reason why RZ doesn't have any regulatory approvals... I mean I guess it's still better than nothing or surgical masks.

@@hobbes3 I actually have a half face respirator as well that I use when needed, I only use the RZ Mask for nuisance dusts basically. Also, they now have one that fits around you ears or above your head, so a much better fit overall
