This is my number 1 favorite all time video on this channel. Carey explains step by step how to upgrade to an SSD drive which can save you hundreds. I just went down to my local computer repair shop and received a quote of $325.00 parts and labor to upgrade to a basic 128 gig SSD. This one procedure I can use for myself and anyone else in my family that could really utilize this service. Super impressed.

AMAZING instructional video. I just purchased a new HP laptop, with an SSD and i7 more other stuff too, but really because I wanted an HD screen, to replace my 6+ year old molasses i5 dell (which I can only use plugged in). This reminds me of years ago when I would work on my own machine. You have reinvigorated me to working on my dell to bring it back to life again. Thank you soo very much. I haven't enjoyed watching a computer repair-type video in quite some time. Also -- like you filming location, makes one feel 'right at home'!!!!! Again thanks so much.

Thank you so very much for an excellent video. My hard disk read/write speeds went from in the 80's to the 500's and 400's. I had some issues with getting the bios to boot to the flash drive and at one point it would not even come up at all. Finally it somehow cleared itself up and all was fine. All in all, it all worked itself out and again I am very thankful to you again for a great video.

I finally see why SSD's are becoming the new standard. Thanks to you Carey, I will be reviewing my laptop some time soon. It's also amazing that your channel grew 100k subs in 5 years. Thanks a ton Carey! KZfaq should have the possibility to give a thousand like for this video. Your video taught me how to optimize my old Lenovo Y510P laptop performance. My laptop was a nightmare since I updated it into Win 10. I was thinking to spend about 1000- 1500 Euros to get a new one. I followed what you said all the way to the end and all worked (other than a bit of change because of Acronis True Image). So, with below 200 euros (110 Euros for Samsung hard disk, 25 Euros for Acronis software, 10 Euros for Sabrent cable and 40 Euros for 8 GB Ram Kingston), I hope it works for another 2-3 years. I can't thank you enough Carey! One thing that took me about 6 hours was that Acronis True Image was not functioning as good as 2 years ago. There are lots of negative feedback regarding bad user experience on Amazon for version 2020. So I decided to buy 2019 version. The one I bought was also defective. I followed as you instructed here but unfortunately the .ISO file from their website was not functioning. I couldn't use the DVD as it couldn't be read by my laptop. I'm going to return the Acronis back to the vender. The solution that turn out to be working for me was that Sabrent cable comes with support of Acronis - on the box for Sabrent hard disk cable is written that Acronis True Image for Sabrent software is inclusive when one purchase this cable. In Sabrent website www.sabrent.com/downloads/ we can download it. At the time of using the software the Sabrent hard drive cable must be plugged into the laptop. The cloning can be run under Windows OS (I tried it on my Win 10). It took me about 1 hour to do the cloning job without need to wrestle with changing boot device under CMOS setting, etc.

Hi Carey, I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I just finished upgrading my Alienware 18 with a Samsung EVO SSD 500GB and an additional 16 GB of RAM. I watched your video no less than 4 times before I attempted the upgrade. I followed your procedure and it went flawlessly. The only difference was with Acronis 2020 and Rufus. But it wasn't anything that I couldn't figure out. My Alienware has new life and, dare I say, is running faster than the day I got it.

I enjoyed watching your video. Even though I am quite knowledgeable with building PC's, I was intrigued by your video title because just last week I upgraded a laptop a friend gave me that he wasn't using and hadn't used in years. The "Trashed" laptop was an old HP G6-series (17" HD Screen) with an A6 cpu, that he claimed was too slow for him. I took it home, cleaned it up, replaced the HD with a San disk 250 GB SSD ($70 @ best buy), replaced the battery ($13 on Ebay), upgraded to Win 10 and upped the memory with an additional 4 GB of RAM. This made it speedy enough for me but I did this to give as a surprise gift for my mother-in-law, who was still using a cheap laptop she had for almost 10 years (she couldn't afford to replace it). Hers ran like a snail compared to my buddy's old laptop BEFORE my upgrades! Your customers may not want to spend the kind of money (pro tech repairs) it takes to do what I did, but for us knowledgeable people it can be quite worthwhile to do, for how little it will cost us to pay for the parts alone!

I was just checking some instruction videos on replacing backlit keyboards and somehow got stuck in watching some cool dude laying out concisely and ever so laid back how to upgrade your laptop. Something I have done over a dozen times in the past, including the image build for the SSD, and all I remember from those times, is heartburn and foaming mouth syndrome because I felt there was always something up with some unintended consequence I either overlooked or the manufacturer had dressed up more than it should have. How the hell do you stay so cool and collected?! Loved every minute of it, even though I could spell out every step ahead of time, glued to the screen due to your detached yet connected (you know?!) and in control manner in which you took us along for that ride. Subscribed!

upgrading ram an hard drive is different in every laptop as far as being easy to difficult...meaning removing the back cover as well as upgrading said hardware, which could be more difficult if you have to do additional step like removing the motherboard due to harddrive/ram being under the motherboard.

The reason it wouldn't boot of the other USB socket might be because it was USB 3.0 (it's clearly blue as opposed to the other one) and some of the earlier devices with a USB 3.0 port need a driver to enable it which isn't loaded until the OS boots. So with older devices you might need to boot off a USB 2 port. These videos are excellent. This is exactly all the same stuff that I do/use (for my own kit) and I'm also picking up some tips a long the way on a tool/tip or two that I didn't know about. Nice that that laptop has all the upgradeable stuff behind just 3 screws. I wish all laptops were like this.

Carey, I watched your videos for several years, several years ago. Much of what I know, I've learned from you. In this particularl presentation I anticipated just about every step. And yet, I don't know *one other IT professional (and I know a few; that's how I too make a living) who can explain what they're doing, what needs to be done, as precisely and as eloquently as you. You should probably have mentioned that you were using the UEFI version of Acronis. That's not self-evident and perhaps needs to be explained. Still, great presentation. Thank you. I agree with Tim W. Thank you for your generosity. These videos are not just commercials. If they are, I certainly hope they work for you. But they're also just sharing and giving and spreading the word. Thank you for that. AJ

Carey, you're amazing very good instructor. Clear step by step presentation and clear like a TV announcer. Like what you've suggested I ordered a Samsung SSD 250gb and a caddy for my current 1TB mechanical HD to be relocated on the optical bay. The only different was I downloaded a Free OAMEI backupper standard instead of buying Acronis. There would be a slightly difference in procedure in creating bootable disc and everything you have shown. Following the step by step procedure is easy but I might miss some options to check mark. Would you be able to add the same but instead of Acronis use Aomei backupper. The most complying reasons to use the later is it's free and most often than not it will be use once by most. The Acronis 2018 which cost you $30 is now $35 at Amazon for one laptop while the AOMEI free, no users limit.

The bootable flash drive is the best kept secret because it allows you to upgrade to as many SSD'S as you want for no additional cost. Most people use Acronis once because they run the .exe file and never realize that if they would have created the Rufus bootable flash drive, they would retain multiple applications.

Great video. I have been a fan of Acronis for years. It is the only backup method I trust. My laptop is a Lenovo G50-45 which has an AMD A6 (yea, I know what you said in the video). I recently increased my RAM from 4GB to 16GB, and your video inspired me to order a SSD to replace the existing HDD. I expect it to be delivered later today. I hope to get a big increase in speed.
