Upgrading a second HP Proliant ML350 G6, but... not without troubles...ugh.
Sometimes things just don't go right, well, this was one of those moments when upgrading this thing from a single CPU to a dual CPU.
This time I tried to record it in 4K, because it looks better than 1080P right? tried to make it look good on camera and, well, that didn't work out so well either. So I ended up with footage I wasn't happy with...but, if do nothing with it, well, it was a waste to record. So here it is, the clumsy upgrade of my 2nd Proliant ML350 :P
So what went wrong? Well, installing the CPU's didn't go well, tried to avoid hitting the camera and tripod, ended up using my left hand (while my handness is right) and couldn't get it right in the socket and looks horrible. Socket pins survived though.
Then one of the RAM sticks (the 'new' one I bought) had damaged pins, not too serious, but, took a while for getting it to work.
First few of my shots with the 4K camera were all corrupt, this is because of the power saving of the camera, switching it off. Starting it up again takes a few seconds, and if you press 'record' while it's not fully started...well, the video editor can't make heads or tails of it (still plays fine in a normal player, just can't edit it).
And finaly, after getting the few working files in, and make a compilation, the audio desyncs. All in all it took me 4 attempts to get the final 'acceptable' video rendered.
Heck, even uploading the video caused problems! The unlucky stike continues it seems.
Anyway, upgrading the ML350 G6 from single CPU to dual E5540. Yes, again the 5540. I wanted to go for hexacores, but it isn't very clear which version of the ML350 supports them and which doesn't. The CPU's aren't very expensive but, 25 euro's (guess about the same in USD) per CPU, not sure if it works? Nah, so played it safe and going for 2 E5540's again (3 euro each). Dispite their age and low clockspeed, in multithreaded applications it can still hold it's own (around the speed of an i7 4770K, which is still more expensive).
The memory I bought had 2 damaged pins, someone must have dropped it or something. The damaged pins made contact with eachother causing it not to work (PC still booted, just gave an error). After clearing the pins, so they didn't make contact with eachother anymore it worked fine.
In a follow up video, I place a PCI-e GPU and a soundcard to convert this server into a workstation for video editing.
Yes, it's old, but don't let the low-clockspeed fool you, as it can still hold it's own in multithreaded tasks like video editing. Ofcourse not as fast as a modern i7 8700K or Ryzen 2700x or something, but, those are also more expensive that this machine was. And besided, if not usefull, I still like the looks of these servers.
Q: What is that blue cord on your hand?
A: Anti static wristband, but elastic is long gone so I pull it over my hand
Q: Z0mg!one! you damage the socket that way!
A: I know, this is the worst ever LGA cpu installment I have ever done. Usualy I don't try to capture it on camera and so don't have to avoid hitting a camera or tripod. Better do it without camera next time I guess. CPU's and sockets did survive though.
Q: Harddisks? Pfffff
A: These 10K rpm drives are still quite fast. Not as fast as a SSD ofcourse but, in a raid config, these are way faster than conventional 7200rpm drives, a lot faster.
Q: What did you mean video corrupt? yet you can make screenshots of it!
A: Videofile itself playbacks fine in a mediaplayer, so I could make screenshots. However, in a video editor it doesn't work, audio desyncs badly, playback speed is wrong, halfway the clip it stops all together, and some files just made the editor crash. It happens when I start the camera when it's not fully 'booted', problem is, you can't see it on screen. Turned off the power saving of the camera, so it should be 'fixed' now, but a bit too late for the footage I shot for this video.
Q: It's soooo nousy! you can't possibly use that to work on can you?!
A: It's noisy, but I don't mind. Have had worse. As long as it isn't anoying resonating noise or anything I'm fine with it.
Q: ATI ES1000? Can it run Crysis?
A: No, and it can barely even run Windows. It actualy slows the PC down, that's why in the next video, I replace it with a GPU.
Q: Does it need 2 powersupplies with dual CPU?
A: No, 2nd proper supply is purely for redudancy. I haven't even connected it (the PSU is still there to fill the gap, otherwise dust and such can get into the connector of the powerboard).
Q: Do I need to place a VRM module for dual-cpu?
A: No, VRM's are on the motherboard itself.
Q: Do I need 4 fans with dual-cpu?
A: To my knowledge, yes. It most likely won't boot with 2 CPU's and only 2 fans.

Thank you. I was a bit hessitant if I should have uploaded this one (because at some points it was realy clumsy), but, not doing anything with the video would have been a waste as well so uploaded it anyway. Looking back at it, biggest mistake was using my left hand to place the processors, when Im right handed. Other than that, socket pins were fine and everything worked. I hope to make more videos of server/workstation hardware, but problem with that is the lack of space I have around here, and it's still quite a bit of money (even though they are relativly cheap). Hope to get my hands on a ML350 G8, and some server with (dual) socket G34 or C32 (those big LGA AMD Opterons), but they are hard to find.

Excellent video. Keep making them. You are wearing the anti-static hand band, and you are right, the larger the socket the easier you can mess up the pins. The CPU frame is wobbly though, I would tighten them up.

I do know that next time I will install a CPU, I will do it the normal way instead of trying to get it right on camera (watching through a small display) :P . The CPU frame (I think you mean the loadplate?) is tight enough, they are a bit wobbly when opened, but very tight when closed (which is normal).

Hello. First of all, a very nice Video! But did you know if these Proliant ml350 supports SSD‘s or Overclocking? Im Interested in buying one.
@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. The ML350 does not support overclocking, it does use the processor's turbo-boost function (the 2.53Ghz CPU's I have run pretty much at 2.66Ghz all-core all the time during load) but other than that, there are no options to overclock it. SSD's work, however it's not recommanded to use them in the front bays (that is connected to the raid controller). The raid controller lacks certain functions to handle SSD's, so it might go in a fail-safe mode and disconnect the drive or give an error, it also lacks functions like TRIM which can affect the SSD. However, it should be fine to use an SSD on the onboard SATA ports, might miss out on speed a bit, but still faster than a mechanical harddrive (it's SATA2 I believe, so that is the max speed you can get out of it). Or you can use an PCI-e > sata adapter, but not sure how the machine handles that, should work, but considering the age, no guarantees.

Good video, I just got one of these bad boys today and Ill be ordering a matching set of xeon's. Any idea on what the top speed of cpu you can add to them, one thing is I wouldn't be brave enough to sport the heavy wool sweater, I would certainly give a massive static shock to the board lol
@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The sweater wasn't wool, and I was using a wristband that prefents static discharge (it's connected to the ground of the wallplug, so any static charge gets directed to the ground). All the components still work (dispite my clumsyness during this one... ).

@Nemesizzonline Жыл бұрын
These server got quite a lot of fail-safes and can be picky with parts. So with no fans connected, it probably not start because of a fail-safe (though I've seen people using custom fans, not sure how they got that to work). Memory needs to be at least ECC, non-ECC most likely won't even work (and recommanded is to use ECC-Reg). Also, it can take a few seconds before anything shows up on the screen (at times, 30 to 50 seconds after changing hardware isn't unusual).

The NIC indicator in front panel all lid(eventhough there is none lan cable connected). Do you know how to solve it? Is it the board is broken? Thx

@Nemesizzonline 3 жыл бұрын
It almost sounds like something shorted out. It's hard to tell from what caused it, but you can always try a few things to see if it helps. First thing (easiest) is a CMOS reset, remove the small CR2032 battery for a few minutes (ofcourse, unplug the powercord first). Then put it back and try to start it again (with only the 'old' RAM, not the new ones). If you have 2 CPU's, you can try to remove 1 of them (including the RAM for 2nd CPU) and see if it comes back to live then (just to test things out). And also, check if there is anything metal that might have fallen into the case (actualy the first thing to check, but just thought of it now), a lost screw or a metal plate or something which might cause a short circuit. A boot-up after hardware change does take longer than a normal boot (screen stays black longer), but the fans should ramp up to maximum so if they don't do that at all, then there is still something wrong. That's about all the advice I can give you from here, diagnose a problem is a bit difficult if you can't work on the machine and test things out ;)

Is there a special way you managed to get the server to output video? I have one and can't seem to get it to display an image no matter what I do.
@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 5 жыл бұрын
No nothing special. I have 2 of these machines now, and I either plug a monitor to the VGA port or use a dedicated GPU, but in both cases it outputs video without doing anything special. It does take longer than a normal desktop PC to show something on screen, the pre-POST can take up 30 to 50 seconds before anything shows up on the screen.

@@NemesizzonlineThank you for the reply. Do you know if there is some kind of bios setting that disables ALL video output? The little speaker inside the computer that is supposed to give beep codes gives a very confusing sound kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8B7i9d0yJ2bnIU.html (this video has the sound and what it normally does. It may be loud). I did reset the CMOS and flipped switch 6 on the system maintenance switch inside the computer (then off after a reboot), but all that ended up doing was make the fans spin at 100% whenever I powered the computer on. At this point I am worried something happened to the motherboard.

I left a reply on your video of things you might check out. As far as I know there isn't a disable all video output (though the system can be used remotely through the iLo port). It is possible that the motherboard is dead, that does happen sometimes. But first you could check a few things I left in the comment on your video (RAM especialy).

Good one! I did the similar Project adding another processor from a HP Proliant kicking around. I didn't realize both processors are different though. E5620 and E5530. both 2.4GHz. could you suggest me a way to add both in to one HP ML 530 G6 pls?
@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 4 жыл бұрын
Both CPU's need to be the same model, so you either get another E5620, or another E5530. The 5600 and 5500 series can't work together. Safest bet is the E5530, as not all models support the 5600 series CPU's (certain mainboard revisions do not support them).

Then the service contract would be more expensive than what I paid for the server + it's upgrades. For a company / small business still using these I could understand someone would pay for the service contract. For me, for a bit of hobby and workstation work it's not realy worth it. Rather spend that money on a ML350 G8 (some are getting close to those prices now).

@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 2 жыл бұрын
It depends a bit on the specifications of the machine (1 or 2 CPU's, number of cores, clockspeed etc). Usualy, for multithreaded applications it still works fine. Games (most anyway) rely more on fast cores rather than many cores (though more and more games cleary start to benefit from 6 to 8 cores). Powerconsumption and noise are a bit of a thing too, if in 'silent mode' it's a heck of a lot more noisy than any modern PC. Put it like this, it's a nice and still capable machine to work with, but you can't expect to get (gaming) performance like a modern system.

Can a standard desktop power supply be used on this motherboard please?
@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 3 жыл бұрын
Im not sure if it will work. These servers use a powerboard, which is connected to the motherboard and PSU's (it can use 1 or 2 PSU's), so the PSU itself is not connected directly to the motherboard. And there there is the thing about the pin-out of the motherboard, not sure if it's the same as normal ATX connectors (in the past, manufacturers like HP and Dell sometimes made the pin-out different, so they weren't compatible with 'normal' or retail computer parts only their own proprietary parts, not always the case, but did happen). And then there is the array of sensors in the machine, as soon as something gives an error it might not boot at all (even the PSU has quite some sensors, how many hours it has run, the health status, load percentage etc). Also been searching around a bit and pretty much can't find anyone who got a normal ATX connected to a board like this. Did find that for the HP Z workstations, the pinout is indeed different than normal ATX, so, I wouldn't be suprised if it's the same for the Proliants.

The fan-frame (blue thing holding the fan) fits only 1 way, make sure it's alligned correctly (at times I had it the wrong way and wouldn't fit). It does require a bit of a push at times to click it into place. If you are referring to the big plastic 'wind tunnel' frame (transparant plastic frame that goes over the RAM ánd CPU's), that I do not know. I didn't have that with both Proliants, I only have the small baffles that click on the fans that go over the RAM.

Things can be a bit trickier with (old) server PC's compared to ordinary house-hold PC's (if that is the correct English term for it...). When booting, it may take some time before anything is shown on your monitor (it can take up 30 to 50 seconds), especialy after changing hardware in the machine, the pre-boot initialisation can take some time (should be shorter after that). When using 1 CPU, make sure it's in socket 1 (obviously, but you never know, sometimes people put the cpu in just a socket not looking if it's socket 1 or 2). And if using 1 CPU, make sure the RAM is only in the slots for CPU1 (and if using 2 CPU's, try to have the RAM spread evenly for CPU 1 and 2 so both have the same amount). Make sure the CPU (or CPU's) are the same type and on the support list. Tricky thing is, not all ML350 G6's support the later 5600 series Xeon, there used to be better notes about it, but HP removed that from their site and I can't find the documents for that anywhere anymore. But there was a clear difference in motherboard type which stated that one would only support the 5500 series Xeon, and the other both 5500 and 5600 (uncluding the hexacores). RAM should be ECC and preferbly ECC Reg, as far as I know normal (non-ECC) is not supported. When using non-reg modules, not all the memoryslots are usuable (should be a sticker on the inside of the sidepanel that has some instructions about memory population, also for non-Reg moduels 'unbuffered dimms' ). There should also be small leds near the mid-right side of the motherboard, which gives post-codes through some green coloured leds. Maybe that can give an indication on which point of the POST it has issues. The front of the chassis also has some simple led indicators, but they will only tell if you have power issues (PSU insufficient it will turn orange/amber, powerboard issues it wil turn red, and with normal operation it should remain green). Hope this info will help you a bit with the troubleshooting ;)

@Nemesizzonline
@Nemesizzonline 2 жыл бұрын
The Xeon X5690 is not on the support list. It goes up to the x5675. From what I can see, the highest 6-core CPU that is supported has a 95W TPD, the one you mention has a 130W TPD, so most likely the VRM's on the motherboard can't handle the high TDP. So even if you'd try, and for some reason it would boot (I seriously doubt it considering all the safety features), it most likely will thermal throttle under full load.
