I bought Intel's very best Ivy Bridge processor from 2013, the Xeon E5-2697V2 with, at the time unbelievable, 12 Cores, 24 Threads and a launch price of a whopping $2614! Now this CPU can be had for around $40, but how does it handle newer games and is it worth getting?

I think these remanufactured motherboards bundled with a CPU and RAM are fantastic entry points for a lot of people. It also significantly reduces e-waste to reuse old parts and give them new life.

Agreed on e-waste, on value I'll argue, you can get a B450 for 70$ that supports 5000 series CPU's and 5600 on a B450 is great value, not to speak that DDR4 is as cheap as DDR3 since they don't make it anymore.

@@PatalJunior True, you can also build a decent, modern, and new PC with a 5600G APU for under $400. That is normally with a B450 or A520 (depending on availability and discounts), 16GB DDR4 3200, 256GB M.2, 500W PSU and a glass sided case. Plus it is readily upgradable with modern parts.

All depends a bit on the price you can find the parts at and what you want to do with them. Just for youtube and light gaming I would be pretty happy with my Core 2 build. It reaches the baseline for a machine that is still usable today. I could see many people being fine with something like a Q6600, Phenom 955, i7-920 and the like. They all have enough cores and fast enough cores to stem such tasks and their boards support enough memory to not run into issues even today. That is obviously not for modern AAA gaming, but if everything you do is youtube and maybe some lighter games up until maybe 2016-17, they will do. I can run Witcher 3 and Doom 2016 on that Core 2 well enough to be able to survive if that were all I had.

@@HappyBeezerStudios When you think about it, the fact that a Core 2 Quad from january 2007 is still able to perform very well in everyday tasks like web browsing and pretty damn well in games up until 2017/2018 is insane and a testament to the greatness of the Core architecture used for Conroe/Kentsfield CPUs.

What a cute panda! I love it! Thanks for reviving the interest into the X79 platform, specially because just as you said there are a lot of Dell Precision, Lenovo Thinkstations or even better HP Z Workstations that can be bought for as little as sub $ 150 USD and can be nice machines to recycle and upgrade. I guess it all boils down to availability and need for AVX2 instructions for any given application, but if someone can get those workstations in their local market then the Chinese X99 platforms musn't be always a better recommendation. Lastly, I don't remember if you already covered the Pentium EE 965 before, but having such interest in revisitng the old "Performance Kings" or "Maxed out" platforms of yore then it could be fun to tinker with one of these just for the joy of doing it. Best regards!

Those particular PlexHD boards are surprisingly solid. I used one with a 1650 v2 as my main setup for about a year and never had much cause for complaint. Even had it overclocked to 4.2GHz and it handled that just fine, though the 1650 v2 is only six cores so easier on the VRM. Paired with quad-channel DDR3 1866 it was a pretty decent setup.

Just to add my thoughts, still using this same CPU to this day, on an Asus p9x79 board, 8 sticks of 32GB gskill RAM, and a GTX 1060. Runs my games just fine, not into the latest AAA games anyway. As a budget PC and slight workstation build, this works for me. Was able to save a lot, since I already have most components, and just needed to add a motherboard, cpu, and 4 sticks of ram (already had 4 before starting my build coming from an i7 2600 build). It is a considerable upgrade from the system I had.

Would you recommend X79 platform for retro windows xp gaming
@PorscheRacer14
@PorscheRacer14 Жыл бұрын
@@Jaroartx Possibly. Whatever motherboard you are looking at, check that you can find drivers. That said, you would need to use Windows XP Professional 64-bit which might not play nice with some games and devices like audio cards or video drivers. Regular XP 32-bit really won't take advantage of the hardware to the max. It's quad channel, so you're probably going to have 8GB at the very least, most likely 16GB. I'm not quite sure if Intel needs a special driver to recognize more than dual-core properly. I never used XP on my X79 system, I only ever used Server 2012, Vista Ultimate X64, Windows 7 Ultimate X64 and Debian. I know when I did use XP way back when I needed a special dual-core driver for XP so games would run properly on my FX-60. I have an Asus TUF X79 motherboard and I see it has chipset, RAID and controller drivers for many OSes so I'd say that mobo, works. Though, it was a phase where you had BIOS or you could flash it to UEFI with a tool. I'd assume you'd want the regular BIOS for XP but I don't know if you can downgrade once it's moved over to UEFI. X79 would be really powerful for XP for sure, but be prepared to do some tinkering. I've been tinkering for a decade and only recently figured out how to get Fast Boot working with my hardware. Also, there's consumer RAID and enterprise RAID on these systems. Never mix the drivers and stick with one. If you want RAID-0 and TRIM (Vista and above) you need enterprise. XP you'd need to manage TRIM on your own. If you want full slot bandwidth with SLI or Crossfire, you need to check the specs of the CPU. Some only handle 28 PCIe lanes and not the full 40. Honestly, Windows 10 is really fast and modern on this system and I play old games like BF2, Blood Rayne, Ghost Recon, R63:RS on there without any issues. Very stable system as long as you have good matched memory and mount your CPU properly. Bad mounting usually manifests itself by dropping memory channels. The only thing I wish it has was an NVMe slot, but that mobo was just before that started showing up. It will not boot a PCIe RAID drive. My X99 system will, but my X79 system will not or maybe it's just this particular flavour of X79 that can't do it; not too sure. Hope this helps!

I don't think there is anything that want's XP and makes use of that much hardware. You'd be fine getting a used 2500K or 3570K, clock it to the roof and throw a beefy 780 Ti in. All of them have driver support for XP and any game that really needs more than 4 GB RAM or 4 cores should run fine on 7/8/8.1/10 as well. And with how many people bought them back in the day, they'll be sold like crazy. I'm actually planning to move my 3570K to homeserver duties once I finally retire it.

The Chinese also make X99 motherboards with DDR3 slots, so you can enjoy native 4k video playback too using cheap DDR3 Reg ECC without a decode capable graphics card (like R9 390). The catch is that only a handful of CPUs (originally released for OEMs) supporting DDR3, and also only the v3 (Haswell) models can do the "all core turbo unlock" hack.

@@bzuidgeest game studios make games that can run on a ps5, (that is basically a 2070 system) because of this people who have extra horsepower, (on a fancy 3080ti system) can't do much more beyond increasing the resolution. this means they are stuck where they are with useless muscles and expensive promises. At least until the mainstream gamer catches up and games become more immersive with AI.

Picked up a Sabertooth X79 w/i7-3930k, ...years ago. Replaced the 3930 with a E5-2690v2 about 2 years ago. Ivy supports pcie-3 while sandy does not. And I like the idle temps in the high teens and low twenties instead of mid-thirties with the 3930. Miss the 45 Mhz OC though. Note: Saber with E5 does not support ecc/registered. So memory is still non-ecc/unregistered. Have not found/tried ecc/unbuffered with the saber. Nice vid....... ; )

The other day I retested an i5 10400 and the multicore score (3127) is quite similar to that of the E5 2697 v2 . I believe that for some workstation tasks these old xeons are quite capable but for gaming their saving grace is their larger cache.

His single core scores are about the same as those on my overclocked Core 2 based Xeon. And my i5 from the same gen is about 30% faster, simply due to the higher clocks (which also gets630 R15 multi and 1345 R20 multi, so about 40% the performance with 33% the cores and 16% the threads)

I've still got my old Dell Precision T7500 dual Xeon X5690 setup. Its got 32 GB ECC and a Vega 64. It still does a good job for most purposes. Of course I've got a modern gaming PC for high end stuff but really for anything pre 2018 it runs fairly well on high settings. Its basically the family gaming computer now. That being said, I've had to add QUITE a few daughter boards to bring it up to date. I've added cards to give it USB3.0, 10Gb and Wifi networking card, a SATA III PCI RAID card. Its quite a large chassis.

It's hit-or-miss with those motherboards. There are some really bad ones that have only half the USB ports working, for example. Some have really cheap and noisy fans cooling the VRMs that will eventually fail. You're stuck with whatever BIOS is on those motherboards, too.

For £71 you can go down just a notch with a 2650, X79 board and 16gb of ram which is a damned good deal, its on Aliexpress. The 2650 is only 8 physical cores, 16 threads but if you factor in the price of a board and ram easily can exceed £70. I have long wished for the £200ish dual socket X79 that comes with 2x2670's, 128gb of ram... I mean those sort of specs are unholy badass and run a formidable GPU and I bet it could prob do quite well in much of todays games.

The original MSRP on that thing is kind of interesting considering the recently released 12 core Xeon W5 2455X is just over 1000$ MSRP. It goes up to 3,9 GHz when all cores are loaded (4,6 GHz maximum turbo). And it is completely unlocked. So you can overclock it even higher. Edit: I got 3437 in Cinebench R15 with my Xeon, (4,6 GHz all core overclock) with Wine overhead because I am using Linux. :)
