Upgrading IKEA UTRUSTA to TRÅDFRI/Zigbee

IKEA's UTRUSTA LED series was made before IKEA standardised on Zigbee. IKEA Has made a Zigbee enabled transformed, you can connect all your eksisting 24V lights. Except the LED with build in transformer. In this video I take the control board from a TRÅDFRI/Zigbee transformer, and install it in an UTRUSTA LED with a build in transformer.

Thank you VERY VERY MUCH! You made me turn my "UTRUSTA" LED's back to life, since my remote was broken and IKEA doesn't provide a replacement remote anymore as it went off production. Actually they told me "oh, you lights can be trashed as the remote is no longer available". Very sad to hear this form a company which is so committed on giving their products a long life...anyway, thank you so much mate! Your video was really helpful. Greetings from Venice(Italy) 🇮🇹

Thanks for sharing this video as it gave me ideas and inspiration to fix my ongoing light control issues with my 2016 installed Omlopp/Ansluta and Utrusta kitchen lights due to failures (battery leakage mainly) and the non-availability of the the old Omlopp round controllers. For the Ansluta in-cabinet and under-cabinet lights, the solution was a simple matter of replacing the old Ansluta wireless lighting drivers with the new Tradfri wireless lighting drivers and then pairing them with a new Styrbar remote controller. All existing Ikea LED lights simply plugged into the Tradfri outlet as the plugs were still standard, which was great news too. For the Utrusta undercabinet LED & power units, I followed your lead and cannibalised the new wireless control boards out of three Tradfri drivers and I used them to replace the old wireless boards in each of the three Utrusta light units. All three then successfully paired with a single new Styrbar remote controller and now all three lights are operating in unison again. I also have two 220V - 250V Utrusta power outlet modules in this LED bank, and they all power outlets operated correctly after this modification with no interactions with the LED light functions. Hi, when you say battery leakage do you mean the killing of batteries in Ansluta remote? I have the very old single button white round disk remote and recently it has started killing the batteries within a week. Not ideal! Is this the reason they were replaced and once this happens they’re fit for the bin? I guess my only option is to buy the Tradfri driver and Styrbar remote? Cheers

Thanks for the video! I was looking for some information about the output plugs on the TRÅDFRI driver so I can connect normal 12v osram dimmable LEDs to it. Would you say those plugs are standard that can be bought from Ikea or third party or do I have to solder this unit to a "normal" light cable in my lamp?

The TRÅDFRI driver with its own PSU outputs 24V, and dims with PWM. The PSU can be replaced with a 12V, which you want in your case. The plugs have a non-standard tap to polarize the connection.

In this system there is a 220v circuit to the electrical plugs of usb and dc , do you know how do you injected that voltage in system ? If you have a cluster of a few lamps do you have to change the board in all of them ? Many thanks

Awesome video, thanks! I actually don’t need the dimmer and dimming function, but the power supply/driver! Utrusta is not in the market anymore and thought maybe I can use your hack for one light and a connected power socket so I can turn them on when I use the old remote. You said the old remote worked fine, right? Or it got fried? Do you think it would work? I have 5 light units and 3 power sockets on the other side of the kitchen, so would be great if I could connect these two to that remote with trådfri driver.

@@PerMejdal oh, sorry, my bad description! So I have the old utrusta system: light unit + power block on one side of the kitchen, like this www.ikeaddict.com/ikeapedia/en/Product/60287589/be-fr/utrusta-bloc-2prises-et-port-usb-blanc/Entry/ And the same setting on the other side of the kitchen, all chained to one adapter. Now, I need to unchain the first part due to redesigning the space. So I will need an extra adapter to connect them back to electricity, and then pair them with the old remote. Problem is Utrusta adapters don’t exist anymore otherwise everything could be super easy. I thought to use your hack, that part that you use trådfri adapter for the light to bring those two part back to life in a way that extra socket work for kettle and the old remote is usable for everything! Sorry for a super long text :p

Yes, you must buy an LED driver for each of units showed in this video. But you can attach additional IKEA LEDs designed to used the plug at the back.

Thay are unaffected by thi hack. I ham using the power sockets.

Could I use the driver with the Godmorgon bathroom light by replacing the control circuit board like you did?

The UTRUSTA driver works with 12V and 24V LEDs, but the GODMORGON lights might be 30V. Which is untested. All I can say is that there is a good change it will work.

Do you have the remote that works with this system for purchase? Our remote is no longer working. Otherwise, how can we turn the lighting off without the remote? There does not seem to be a touch control on the Utrusta.

You need the remote to control the lights.

The original round Omlopp remote controller has not been available from Ikea for at least 3 years from my experience, and the ebay ones have long sold out. As you have found out, there is no other way to switch the Utrusta LEDs on/off, and they will come on and stay on when there is a power surge/outage. Fortunately, I found this video and followed its guidance to modify/replace the wireless controllers to work with the new Tradfri/Styrbar components.

Does it matter if it differnt size of the lamp. Some of them is longer.

I have only tested with the 40 cm version. Longer versions will draw more watts. The module is rated for 30 watts.

Hvad har du præcist gjort? ER det en 40cm lampe du modder? Som jeg skrev ved 3:37, så kom jeg til at ødelægge kontrol-boardet på lampen, og det var først da jeg fik gang i loddekolben at det kom til at fungere godt.

Yes, I have 4 in production ever since I made the video. No issues. They still work.
