Ikea Tradfri bulb Teardown

Hi guys,
In this video I look inside an Ikea Trådfri light bulb, which recently failed on me.
I wanted to see if it was a quality issue causing the bulb to fail.
However I got quite surprised by the inner workings.
Would I buy the Ikea Trådfri bulbs in the future. Yes, yes I would :D

It would have been nice to see closeups of the boards and to know the part numbers on the zigbee board.

Nice video, they don't make it easy to hack these! I plan to take one apart for the ZigBee board to control a strip of LEDs

Did you succeed with this? Did you measure what voltage that smaller PCB can run?

I have a very similar bulb (if not exactly the same) and it died on me too. It is an RGB 600lm E27 bulb. Perhaps also bad luck for me.

Quality issues also with ikea tradfri GU10 2.5w 80lm for each 2 years 5 defective, now 10 bought at 2018

You could have checked if one of the led diodes is dead. This might have been an easy fix. It is not possible to judge it just by looking at it.

Tank you for a nice video, I have two Trådfri lights that just stopped working, one while turned off and one while I was using it, the room got dark all of a sudden. I've tried to contact Ikea but haven't gotten any replies. With the boards being modular like they are it would be interesting to see the insides of a none Trådfri Ikea led light

If you remove the zigbee controllboard and just take it and use it in a 12v installation, how many watts of led lamps is it able to handle?

So I guess the big PCB is the mains to dc power supply and the smaller PCB is working low voltage dc to control the smart / wifi functions. Did you check what voltage that smaller PCB takes as input and also what it sends out to the led board?

Informative yes, but if you want to repair a bulb search for led bulb repair, there you can see why some led-bulbs bust. It can be easy to measure an fix it.

Seing this design gives me headaches... Power Electronics potted in Resin, and capacitors back to back with the hot running LEDs... thats designed to fail...

The potting compound might be thermally conductive
