Video showing upgrade of a Dell Inspiron 1525 (Please remove your battery, I forgot..)
Switching the RAM from 2 to 4GB (200-pin SODIMM), The Laptop only recognizes 3.46GB as its 32bit, but that's still a decent increase.
And the 1.73Ghz Dual Core Processor to a 2.0Ghz (which I upgraded for the Intel® Virtualization not the slight speed increase). The Processors are Socket P. Compatible Processor are Intel Celeron 540, 550 or 560, Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2370, T2390, T2330 or T4200, or Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, T5450, T5550, T5750, T7250, T8100 or T8300.
I'm getting a lot of comments and messages from people asking for advice on upgrading their (non Dell 1525) Laptops. Unfortunatly I cannot answer specific questions not related to the 1525 as thats all I own.
BUT, here is a message I sent to someone with an example of the process I used to determine what I could upgrade too.
"You'll have to do some research to see what processors the physical connection (called a socket) is compatible with, then you'll have to check and see what the software (BIOS/Motherboard) is compatible with.
The easiest way is to just google and see what other people have done.
I googled "dell M5010" upgrade and found this thread -
forum.notebookreview.com/hardw...
Someone states there that it is compatible with all Turion X2 TL series processors and recommends a TL-60, TL-64 or TL-68 processor.
Before buying a new processor you'll want to see what you have. I use CPU-Z to find this, you can download it here -
www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z....
That will give you all the information on whats currently in your Laptop if you didnt know.
Then google the three processors that the thread suggested to see how fast they are - (I search AMD TL-64)
products.amd.com/en-us/noteboo...
The TL-60 is Dual Core 2Ghz
TL-64 is Dual Core 2.2GHz
and the TL-68 is 2.4GHz
Bear in mind that processor speed isnt the only variable which makes for a better processors, a higher L2 Cache is also better, but I checked on the AMD page and they have all 1MB so that doesnt matter in this case.
Then go to eBay and search for the TL-60, 64 and 68 etc and see how much they cost and pick one in your budget, weighing up how much of an improvement it is over what you have.
I found the TL-60's around $5, the TL-62's at around $15 and the TL-68 starting at $65 and going to well over $100.
If it were me I'd likely get the TL-62 - assuming its faster than what came in your M5010 it gives the best bang for your buck.
You might also want to check into buying more RAM, CPU-Z will also tell you how much you have and in how many slots. You can follow similar steps as I outlined above to see how much ram you can put in there and what types you need."

I thought I would tell you a bit about my experiences of upgrading my Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop. I Have been using this since 2007 and have been very happy with it. It originally run Windows Vista but now Windows 10 Pro version 2004. A popular upgrade for any laptop is to fit a solid state hard disk. A lot of the slowness of any computer seems to be caused by disk access. This computer has a 160Gb hard disk which is getting pretty full, for this machine I decided on a Crucial BX500 240GB SSD. So before fitting the SSD I decided to max out RAM. There are two "slots" in this Laptop and they were both occupied with 1Gb modules. The largest size you can fit to the Inspiron 1525 is 2Gb which gives a total of 4Gb. Again I went for Crucial DDR2 RAM. I then installed the latest Windows 10 pro and Office 2019. The machine is still running well after 14 years.

I upgraded my Dell Inspiron1525 last year (2016). This laptop has Core 2 Duo T5450 1.66 GHz processor, 2x1GB DDR2 667MHz RAM and 160GB Hitachi SATA Hard Disk. First I wanted to upgrade the Processor only for speed increase. But after searching, I found that many of them advised that there won't be any speed increase. I dropped the idea of upgrading the processor but instead upgraded from 2GB (1x1)to (2x2) 4 GB DDR2 667MHs and replaced the Hitachi 160GB SATA Hard Disk to Kingston 120GB SSD. I used CloneZilla to clone the installed Windows 10 Professional 64 bit from the Hitachi Disk to the SSD and replaced the SSD as main drive. Again I bought Hard Disk Caddy and removed the DVD drive and fitted the Hitachi 160GB on the Caddy and installed it as 2nd Drive. Now my Dell Inspiron1525 running with the boosted performance of SSD and 4GB of RAM.

I would like to do the same thing, almost everything, excepting the clonning of the old hard disk. I`m forced by any components of the laptop to do the same thing like you? Please, a bit of help.. I have the same Dell Inspiron 1525, Intel core2 Duo, T7250@ 2.00 Ghz 778 mhz 1.99 GB of RAM ... I`m not into IT thing, i barely change a RAM memory, so..be gentle.:) I was running on windows 7 32 bits but it was to "heavy" for my Dell. Now, i`m running Windows xp but..i would like something else. Any advice and help would be much apreciated. Thanks!

@@dignitas1980 It seems that you have nothing to clone from the outdated Windows XP installation. Back up all your important photos, videos and files on your external hard drive or USB flash drive. Dell Inspiron 1525 is usually sold with Two 1x1 GB DDR2 RAM. If you want to speed up your laptop, you have to buy two (2x2 = 4GB) DDR2 778 MHz or 667 MHz RAM and a Kingston or any other branded 128 or 256 or 500 GB SSD. You grow your confidence level by repeatedly seeing and understanding the steps shown in the demo videos on KZfaq regarding the replacement of RAMs and SSD. Note down important points and steps in a notebook. It's very easy replacing the 2 RAMs and SSD drive. And then you have to buy Windows 10 Pro 32 bit DVD and install Windows as usual or download windows 10 Pro 32 bit iso from Microsoft website on another computer, write it on a DVD or Flash drive and install and get the product key from any source to make it permanent. Installing the Internet Security software etc are as usual. You can install the SATA Hard disk by fitting on a hard disk caddy as additional drive by removing the CD/DVD dive and replacing it.. Pl refer this link -kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kOCRfMRm1Li0gHk.html

Its called Thermal Compound and its very important as it allows the heat to conduct from the processor to the cooler. Without it the processor would overheat and likely fail pretty quickly. On the processors it would be better to go with the T9500 as the X9000's heat output is not accommodating to the design of the 1525, even with thermal paste I doubt any aftermarket cooling solutions can be used/exist for the 1525 and given that these processors are 10 years old I doubt anyone is using these laptops for anything other than office suite applications, programming or web browsing so real life performance impact would be marginal. T9500 CPUs are also far cheaper (50-60% less) to purchase online.

Different processors have different sizes and they need to match, also even if they physically match you have to make sure your motherboard will support the new processor. Generally your support page for your laptop will indicate the compatible processors and failing that online forums should be able to help. In this video I just googled "Dell 1525 processor upgrade" and that's how I made my choice.

Its heatsink compound. You can get it at most computer stores, its necessary to transfer the heat created by the processor to the heatsink so it wont overheat and get destroyed.

@n1bpd
@n1bpd 11 жыл бұрын
It's thermal paste to conduct heat across the gap between heat sink and processor so it cools effectively. Most stores that sell computer components will sell it. I apparently applied it incorrectly, you just need a tiny rice sized dab in middle and then when you press the heat sink on top that spreads it out.

For those of you who are interested to go 4GB for RAM and beyond: in order to use the full memory capacity switch to Linux and more precisely to a kernel with PAE (physical address extension; 2.3.23 and above) support thus making it possible for a 32bit OS to work with the whole thing. Currently PAE is always turned on in modern Linux distributions. Dell has also a decent Linux support (unlike Sony or Toshiba) so driver issues might not be that many as you think.

Is there a reason for this? It would seem to me that since you're in there you might as well clean it up and add new paste. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Check forums/use google (search for your laptops model number and the model number of the processor you plan on using). Contacting the manufacturer can be as simple as checking their website, going to the support page and finding your laptop in the list of products. They likely list the components it is compatible with.

Liking the vid. Look up your laptop, find what type of chip socket type it uses (CPU-Z will further inform you), buy the highest spec'ed version you can (especially if it's a pain in the **** to change), and try to get a cache upgraded version if possible. I say this as I changed my CPU yesterday on my dell Vostro 1720 and found the processor drivers to be the same for Intel P8600 and the T9900 although I had to uninstall the original drivers then reinstall fresh drivers them to have the correct chipset appear in device manager. If anything the PC runs cooler (60-65c max) but that may be also due to cleaning out the fan etc while changing the chip and the chip possibly having a better cooling algorithm, stepping regime etc. The T9900 was not a specified chip for my laptop originally but I threw caution to the wind. p.s I believe the CPU chip controls the fan to a certain extent so don't worry too much about Bios etc, most companies have a site where you can get the last/latest bios anyway.

It's good to go, the BIOS will detect the extra memory the first time it boots after the upgrade and do what it needs to do. You don't need to do anything (I'd check in the system settings to make sure if I put 2GB in, that I have 2GB showing up and not just 1GB just to be sure)

In the BIOS setup you have to activate 64 bit capability. Then it can use all of the 4 gigs of ram plus 64 bits is more efficient and has more compatibility with current software.

hello , i understand this was for a 32 bit version of the laptop (dell inspirion 1525) recently i upgraded my bios, 4 gb ram, so i have it running 64 bit win 7 system using the T5750 chipset , was wondering if you know what chipset would be better then the T8300 , as the ones you have listed are for 32 bit, not 64 bit (it would work but i want to know my options in 64 bit) much appreciated

When you turn it on the BIOS will detect the changes automatically. You might get a message that your configuration has changed and need to press a key to continue but that's it.

have you upgraded to the T8300 by any chance? by default my 1525 came 4gigs and with the T5750 (2.0GHz) I would like to know if the difference is good enough to replace.

I think I just used a case opener (for opening up electronics like a cellphone). You can use any flexible peice of plastic such as a section of a credit card etc.

what about acer travelmate p253e 8gb ram intel 1.8ghz processor. I want to upgrade it to 17 processor but am not sure what to do or if it will work as i have seen that when you buy the processor you get a huge fan with it. Obviously the fan wont fit in my laptop. do you HAVE to put the fan in or will it just explode if you dont? thanks

You can, but as I said it isn't worth it. The old paste can dry out so it wont fill in the space as well and new paste is likely better than what was on there originally from the manufacturer. It's inexpensive, you can get the stuff from nearly any store that sells computers or on eBay.

It's safe to say that ALL Laptop and Desktop Processors are not compatible, even with same series. I was just using the i7 as an example of processors that have desktop and mobile versions, I didn't mean to imply that the i5/i3 or any other processor would be compatible. You have to buy the desktop version for desktops and the mobile version for laptops etc.

That is too much thermal compound, don't you think. Wouldn't just a bead pressed in between the two surfaces should be quite sufficient? Accordingly, the thermal compound is not for aiding thermal conductivity, but for increasing surface area of contact, because even for two very flat surfaces, there are minute crevices and therefore minute areas of non-contact. The number of such minute crevices of non-contact adds up to a significant total area of non-contact. The thermal compound is not a better conductor of heat, but a somewhat good conductor of heat, whose fluidity is exploited to fill up those minute crevices. It is better not to have the thermal paste between the two surfaces, had they been completely flat, which is not possible. Because if they were perfectly flat, the molecular attractions between the two surfaces would weld/fuse them together.
