So this is my wifes 1946 Ford 2N tractor that she bought for $250. We where told that it was originally equipped with a street sweeper attachment for the state. We made a will it start video on this tractor a year ago and it has been our most popular video so far with 1,000,000 views as of now. With the upgrades we do in this video it should work much better for us on the farm.

Working across the face of the component is always the best practice for install. For removal, it doesn't make a difference for wheels, in particular. If it was a valve cover, intake or cylinder head, yes, Id be looking to a removal pattern. In this application, for wheels, Ralphie is right, it doesn't matter,

It definitely matters when installing a hoop that you do it in a star pattern. Otherwise, the torque will be unevenly distributed, which will lead to distortion of the surfaces, plus the hoops won't seat properly. The information is in service manuals.

@@PlasmaStorm73-N5EVV a car is not a tractor. there is a weight diference, and a tractor is pulling equipment, while a car is extremely light, has a smaller axel, goes faster, and the tires wear out faster, so it won't matter too much.

16 psi is plenty for a small tractor tire. Higher air pressure just tears up the ground. And yes they are called self clearing because they push the mud to the side to get down to fresh earth. If you run them backwards it piles the mud under tire. Great content!

Dad is always right Ralphie... always. P.S. If you want to add weight back into the new tubes/tires, you can use RV anti-freeze instead of the more expensive options. It can usually be found cheap at the end of winter (I got some recently for $2 gallon at Menards). It also provides some rust protection too. I've had it in one of my old Cub Cadet garden tractors for over 30 years. P.S.S. You can use talcum powder on the tube/tire to help the tube slip in and align easier. "Any job worth doing... is always worth doing right."

RV antifreeze works great. You can mix it about 30% with water and it will be good. You can buy a fitting to go from a water hose to the tube on Amazon or eBay. I used a barrel and sump pump to fill the ones on mine.

Yes it most definitely matters when installing any fasteners, To do the cross/Star pattern helps to bring what ever your tighten flush to the base. If you go in a circle it could get pinched and not set flush and cause more damage later on.

With respect to the tread, my Minnesota farmer grandfather told me the point on the tire points in the direction your working. This meant if the tractor was doing most of the work in reverse like a snow blade or backing up during cultivating in the wet spring the tires would be mounted in reverse. He mounted the tires on my old pedal John Deere tractor backwards and I got to hear it explained every time a farmer would notice.
@zachbrewer6889

Great job, i think you should be ok with 10-15 psi. In those rears though, the tractor will have a much smoother ride than if you run 25-30 psi in them and may actually get a bit more traction. Its kind of a catch putting new rubber on old tractors as you often spend more than the equipment is worth on the tires/rims/tubes. But at least you don't have a tractor payment and you still got a good little workhorse to use on your property. You can get/fabricate many useful attachments for that three point and these little fords seem to be tough as nails and last a long time with little maintenance. Regards from Western IL, Zach B.

Doing wheelies is something you want to avoid on a tractor :) We welded a large piece of angle iron and some thick plate steel to the nose of our old John Deere A and then chained and bolted a steel nail keg barrel to the nose and filled it with plate steel, sand and even some oil to weigh it down good as it's very hilly here. Even then I often found myself riding on the nose of the tractor sitting astraddle of the radiator cap with my feet in that barrel for my extra weight when we'd be baling hay on these hills and still occasionally felt the front end leave the ground. I sure don't miss changing out those big tires though and beating the wheels off and then back onto the cogged axles but, when it's gotta be done it's gotta be done. We used to use two sledges as well, but on the same wheel, one hitting the back side the other matching blows on the front side of the wheel. Clearance might be an issue on yours for doing that though. If you can patch up those old tubes they make fun sleds on the hills in the winter time, or for floating around on in the lake. I sure do like how much easier it looks like Ford made changing the tires out as opposed to the old JD's :) It's funny you mentioned the model A engines as folks used to build their own tractors in WWII out of old Ford model A's. Some day if you can, I'd suggest getting a corded Kobalt impact gun. I have yet to run across a nut one of those can't break loose! We used to fill our tractor tubes with what we called "brine" instead of air for the added weight. It was some sort of solution that wouldn't freeze in the Winter, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was in it...but it wasn't actual brine, lol. I put a small drop of it on my tongue once and it set my tongue to burning like crazy, LOL! Good job on that soap! We never thought of that back in the day. Then again, it was always us kids changing tires and no one really ever did show us how, we were just told to do it. Live and learn :)

If You face the tread where it scoops, the mud/dirt will pack into the tread and basically make a slick, the tread in the “v” fashion makes for the tire to “self-clean so when it hits the mud/dirt it pushes the old out and let’s it grab new.

What's important is that you remove the top lug nut last... I always tighten diagonally and incrementally just because it's the sad nerdy way to do it... But let's face it, you're not going to get wheel vibration on a tractor... So, Ralphie, in this instance it doesn't matter... (Listen to your dad, though, and humour him. It's the easiest way)...

There is some wisdom in using a star pattern when installing wheels but sometimes it is unnecessary on rough, slow things like the tractor--but it is a good habit for young kids to learn. Don't stress over it.

Tractor drive tires are directional. When installed properly the track left will point the way it went in forward direction. In mud you want the tread to gather and bunch rather than push out and dig holes. Generally, you want the direction of greatest ground traction to be in forward direction. It's amazing to me the number of smart people on youtube that do this exactly backwards.

Those old Ford tractors are pretty cool. In the 60's I rebuilt our 1948 engine with new pistons, rings, bearings and valves that you had to grind the ends in order to get prober valve gaps. There were no hydraulic valves back then and it ran awesome and lasted forever. Painted it blue and red and it looked awesome. Great tractors for what they were made for.

I love y’all working together on the old tractor. We have had a few ourselves and I think I can make your life easier. Loosen the lug nuts and make them finger tight on one side of the tractor. Ride around the yard. Then do the same for the other side. You turn the tires around for snow traction. They will load up with mud that way though. Get the old girl some steps to put your feet on.

Yes the tyres... there I go again... Casings face that way because they push the mud out to let the casings get down to the hard ground for traction. Thanks Stew

I have an 8n and a jubilee. Love both tractors. When you have to replace tires and rims it costs more than a good running tractor with good tires and rims. Sounds like it's a strong runner.
