Can you talk a little more about how you tied into the main? What transfer switch did you use? I have a 3 ton and 2 ton AC on the main, the furnace and everything else is on the sub panel, I’d like to go portable over whole house standby to save on cost.

Howdy! I specifically avoided that in the video as I'm a mechanical engineer and not a licensed electrician. I'll give a general description of what I did, but I will always recommend that you at a minimum consult with a licensed electrician prior to modifying your electrical system. I used a setup that would typically be used to power a 50A RV. The generator has the same 4-prong 50A outlet that would be required to plug in a 50A RV so I installed the receptacle that would normally be on the RV itself into my external junction box. This allowed me to run each of the hot wires from the generator to one side each of the mains in the junction box. The neutral and grounds from the generator were then run to the main ground bus. (Conveniently, all my GFCIs in the house worked perfectly on generator power.) There is no transfer switch in this system. In order to not create a hazard, the 200A breaker directly under the meter must be disconnected prior to attaching the generator to ensure isolation from the mains. I'm using a relatively short (15') RV power cable for this system. It is 6ga wire. For RV use it is rated to 10000W and looking at the power pulled during my testing I do not believe I will exceed that so I'm not worried about heat. The only slight concern I have is the camper outlet on the junction box is effectively a recessed male plug. It has a good weatherproof cover on it, but at the moment it cannot be locked closed. When the house is running normally off the mains, the exposed prongs inside this plug are hot 220V 1ph. I'll be installing something to keep that secure. That's about it. Good luck with your system. Please bring in some good electrical experience before making any changes. Thanks again!

Depends if you live where you can lose power frequently, or if you have a certain service at your house that must run in the event of even a short-term outage. I owned a house that was well below street grade and had an ejector pit in the basement that pumped all the sewer up to the street. It was only about 50 gallons so if we lost power, you basically couldn't flush a toilet. That's when I bought my first home generator setup. Now, living near the gulf coast, it's a necessity for obvious other reasons.

Very similar situations…had a 5500/8500 generator for years. Upgraded to a 12k / 15k about 2 years ago. The new generator runs our 6 ton and our 2 ton heat pumps simultaneously. Installed soft starts on both. Can now run everything in the house. Can’t run the electric dryer and the pool pumps / hot tub all at the same time but often see it pulling 52 amps at 240v. I backfeed the panel and use my main breaker to isolate from the grid. Thx for the video

Nice video. Thanks. Received my 100111 in June 2018. Did the 5 hours break in time...Doesn't have to be 5 hours continuous but did several runs and keep tabs on a spread sheet. Have just over 15 hours run time now..Had a 3 hour outage summer 2019. Genny works great. Powered the whole house including a 3.5 ton / 14 seer AC unit. Ac and all lights and ceiling fans also running, the bar style power meter --on the control panel--only lighted 2 of the available lights. Awesome. Purchased the matching Gen Tent. Very nice. Using AMSOIL for the crankcase. 100% synthetic..I keep this one in the garage and just wheel it outside once a month and run it for a few minutes. I also swap out the gas every 4 to 6 weeks. Just bought a new battery powered fuel transfer pump from AMZ for 76.00..Tera brand (?) with a long hose. Makes moving fuel around a lot easier..Even tho i swap the fuel out regularly I use the Star*Tron Enzyme Fuel treatment in all stored gas. The portable fuel pump makes it easier to fill and remove gas from the Gen with the Gen Tent installed..especially during foul weather. Been living in central Florida for 31 years. This is the best solution yet for loss of power during hurricanes, etc..Sorry for the length of this note..Hope u have a nice Covid Free day. over and out.

The thing this big Champion needs besides a sound box to run in, is if natural gas is delivered to your neighborhood is to convert the engine to also run on natural gas. The engine will almost run forever on natural gas and you won't have to get gas when the station is closed because of a hurricane.

You need to understand that the typical non-inverter generator puts out a total harmonic distortion (THD) in the 10-25% range. Conversely, inverter generators typically put out less than 3% THD. So, if want to run a high efficency (read computer driven) furnace, tankless hot water heater, smart TV, computer, or UPS, 10-25% THD from a non-inverter generator can reak havoc and sometimes even damage the computer controls of your high efficency furnace or computer driven devices. So, if you want to run sensitive electronics, be sure to get an inverter-generator.

I was hoping to find an inverter unit this large but there aren't any even close. I suppose I could parallel a pair of 9k inverters, though that would be pretty costly for initial investment. (Maybe not bad f it did save my electronics) In any case, so far, I've powered the house for probably 100 hours with this one and had no issues at all. Thanks!

Just install a whole home surge protector to your panel and you'll be fine. I installed a good size one that need to be wired into a double pole 50amp breaker and it's been great. I originally had a generac guy come by to give me an estimate on doing a whole home generator on my home tied into my natural gas but he wanted like 20k to do everything and I got some info off him before telling him I'll pass, a couple things he told me they would do would be to add a whole home surge protector and compressor saver so with a little research I found everything they would use and same brands they would install and did it myself and bought this big boy generator. It's been great.

The only thing I never liked about champion generators is their governer mechanisms are wacky, like towards the end of your video your close to a half load and the frequency was 58hz when it needs to be 60hz when you tune the governer, and you can with a phillips screwdriver, put about a 8000watt load on it and turn the gov screw in till its 60hz but when you take the load off it will run to fast and be around 64hz to 68hz I've noticed on alot of champion models, other than that never had an issue with champion

Aaron, I'd like to know if you were able to run your 5-Ton AC on this Champion generator. Please let us know your results. I'm looking to accomplish the same at my house in AZ, and I've been looking at this model, along with another Westinghouse generator. Updated: Looks the the video answered my question at 14:48. Nice. With a hard-start kit my 60,000 btu unit should run fine. Only 3 green bars on the load meter. I just need to run the AC and a 13 cu ft freezer and a refrigerator/ freezer combo in a power outage.

Thanks. I apologize for the delayed response. Yes the unit can run about everything. Though I've found that you don't want to be running something else with a big load, like a dryer, when the ac tries to start. Otherwise it's been great.

This thing is massive and will DRINK fuel. Fuel that could be hard to get and nonexistent in an emergency. Plus, its not really safe to store 30-50 gallons of fuel (this thing probably uses 20+ gallons of fuel a day). At todays price, this generator sells for about $2300. I think it would be MUCH better to buy two smaller units that can be paralleled together, for less money. Run one generator most of the time when the load is less, and two generators when the load is high.

I do have a soft start kit on the unit. Not sure which one, but it did make a difference under normal power. The house lights don't dim anymore. I'm looking at an even softer start setup but it's pretty pricey and the unit is still under warranty so I don't really want to give them an opportunity to say I broke it. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! My AC is a 4 ton, and I'm thinking this generator is just what I need. Sounds like a soft start kit is a good idea, though. I was hesitant about a Chinese generator, which, with the possible exception of Honda, they're ALL Chinese. But the Hond equivalent was nearly 5x the price. But, I have to say my 7500 running watt Champion has been a great machine. High build quality, good materials, and even good fit and finish. Gotta admit, I'm kinda hooked on Champion generators now.

My electrician said that I couldn’t power my Trane AC unit because my generator is 50amp and my AC is 60amp
@aaronsrose
@aaronsrose 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I'm not an electrician, but the way I think about that is, my generator outlet is rated at 50 Amos per leg, and I'm running my entire house with it. The house is rated at 200 amps. You just can't use that much at once. It will depend on the start up current draw of your ac unit and the generator's capacity to handle that. Once the compressor is running it's probably drawing 15-20 amps total. Good capacitors and correct wire sizes are important. I can run the ac, the dryer and both double ovens on the generator at the same time with no issues, but if the ac tries to start when something else big is operating, it may trip the breaker.
