Leather upholstery can be intimidating for a DIY crafter, but it doesn't have to be. Whether you're a crafter, woodworker, or absolute newbie, getting a first hand look at the upholstery process will help you learn all the techniques. Is leather harder to work than fabric re-upholstery jobs? How much leather do I need to buy? These are the types of questions I will be answering in my upholstery videos. From a chair to a whole dining room full of chairs, slip seat upholstery is fun and easy! Once you learn how to cover a dining chair, you'll want to learn how to upholster a round stool too. For now the focus is dining chair upholstery. Watch to see how!

There are a gazillion videos out there on how to do this. I really appreciate the detail of using the heat gun and having mini pleats. And, it does help to mention, as you did, that sometimes you have to remove a few staples to make adjustments. I thought something was wrong with me that I was removing so many of the staples I had put in. Just takes some practice. Thank you!

Thanks Jody. I think these no-sew leather cushions are more difficult than big cushions, because you have to finesse the corners. Best to you.

We like your DKT#12 Redwood leather. We think it might go with the dining table to recover the chair seats. I was wondering if we could get a sample to make sure it is going to match? Also, can we use the hair dryer instead of purchasing heat gun?
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker Жыл бұрын
You can use a hair dryer on high to soften leather. That should work fine. For samples contact leatherhidestore.com Best of luck with your project!

I used 2.5 oz leather in this demonstration. Thinner upholstery leather like 2 oz goat leather works even better. Best

This may be a silly question, but I'll ask anyway. Why do you advise we put vents in the wood?
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, the vents in the wood base are only needed if you use leather or vinyl. These non-porous materials won't let air escape as you sit down in the chair like regular upholstery fabric does. So for that reason it's always advisable to cut some vent holes in solid wood or plywood seat bottoms when using leather or vinyl. If the seat frame was jute webbing instead of wood, it wouldn't be a concern. Thanks!

Hello! Please, what temperature is recommended / required for the heat gun?

I'm not really sure what temperature it gets to. Just good and warm to help the leather smooth out. Best to you.

for anyone coming across this, I just did two cushions yesterday (4 more to go) and I used my heat gun on its lowest setting. It doesn't take long to get the leather warm enough to be more pliable.

@TheThoughtfulWoodworker thanks for the lesson! You used a heat gun...what if I used an iron instead since I don't own a heat gun yet...what setting would I use? Could I toss it in the dryer beforehand to remove wrinkles and soften it? What setting and how long please? I noticed you have a notched end on your blade for staple removal..was that a Jerry rig you made or can they be purchased? Nice clean corners btw...do you show how to trim the excess? I'd be concerned about cutting too much off so I would appreciate seeing it done please
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker 6 ай бұрын
A hair dryer will work to soften leather, if you don't have a heat gun. You can trim the excess leather with a safety razor or sharp scissors. Best to you!

How do you attach the finished cushion to the chair?
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker

Two good ways to attach a slip seat. Either screws through corner blocks from underneath. Or sometimes I use bolts and threaded inserts. Best

@@TheThoughtfulWoodworker I finished our cushion project yesterday. I didn't have a tool to heat the leather but it still turned out decent. WAY better than it looked before. Good video suggestion! If you have supple leather, you may be able upholster it in the same way as a dining chair. Otherwise you may need to make patterns and sew parts together to give the leather some shape. Good luck with it.

Any wrinkles are on the underside, so it's all good. I usually prefer a sewn cover. But on dining chairs this technique works well. Cheers

I feel the same on the corners being too smashed down. Especially when doing MCM chairs that you want straight clean lines on. With this chair in the video I don’t think is as big a deal. But wondering what the foam style in this application was to suck down so easy. Was it, Fair Quality: 0.8LB - 1.5LB Density? Or, Good-Quality: 1.6LB - 2.4LB Density. I ask because I am about to do a set of Danish Modern dining chairs in leather and don’t want corners to be smashed down. But still want to pull tight enough to not have wrinkles on the top. Also maybe it was already know in the comments or description, but what thickness is the foam 1.5” or 2”? Thank you. Nice work.
