Emma speaks Dutch and English. She learned to sing Voilá in French Phonetically and brought 12500 people to tears at the Vritjhof Theater in Holland... and 45million on KZfaq. Go back and watch this again with the understanding she is hooked to 2 feeding pumps for 22 hours a day. She gets to be free for 2 hours - that's when she goes out and sings; when she sheds her cocoon... She also has another single thats very personal to her life - Strijder (warrior)... De meisje is en strijder. Dank je wel, Emma.

Dutch started out very German but mixes in a lot of English to chisel the sharp edges off. I'm not sure how fluent she is in German but her English is flawless. The Amish communities here in the U.S. speak a dialect they call Pennsylvania Dutch but I've seen German and Dutch natives holding a conversation with the Amish in their own language and mostly understanding each other.

Very appreciated that you reviewed this song. The lirics reflects, like in Voila, Emma's deepest wishes. She sings so well, and it's such a nice video, although I think it was mainly meant for a younger audience. But I like it a lot, it's a catchy and upbeat song and Emma has a unique sound you can't get enough.

You seem to have missed the meaning of the song. A butterfly sheds its former self, which is restricted and confined, and changes into something new and able to soar above the burdens of its former self. Emma is wishing to be unburdened from the disease that inhibits her, and soar above to the fulfillment of her dreams; it expresses her deepest longing to be free. It is a beautiful song done when she was only 13 years old. As you saw, it was very well produced and performed. I think it is her best in terms of expressing her deepest feelings about her situation, and her hope that things might get better someday.

Thank you so much for highlighting some of the aspects of Emma's life that have been so formative, and made her the incredible individual that she is. I'm going to add in a copy paste of a comment I've made in a significant number of reactions in a moment, it's relevant here, the depth in this song is incredible, especially when you consider that she was first put on feeding tubes as a toddler at 9 MONTHS of age, I'm sure she had no way to mentally cope with the reason or requirement, or the huge physical restrictions that it imposed, and it's been a massive limitation on her life for 22 hours a day, EVERY day since, she NEVER can have a day of freedom from this awful tie, the nearest example I can think of is that it's like being attached to a boat anchor and having to drag it around with you everywhere you go, and when she was younger, she had to drag the two pumps around on a small trolley, they were too heavy for her to carry in a back pack or similar, at least now she can carry them in a backpack or shopping bag or similar, though she doesn't have huge stamina, probably because she's so tiny, and doesn't have energy reserves in the same way as would be the case if she was taller and larger. She's reached the place where she can talk about the feeding pumps, and show them to people who interview her, but it's taken time, at one stage, she needed professional help to overcome the problems she was having, between the life restrictions, and bullying from people around her who didn't understand why she was always tied to the pumps and the means to move them, as well as her growth retardation, but now, she's risen above it all, and managed to hold firm to that wonderful personality, and in all of the interviews I've seen in these last few months, she so clearly demonstrates a maturity that goes so much further than her age, I guess it comes with the experiences she's had to cope with, she effectively had to grow up a lot sooner than she was meant to. Then there's the mental discipline of coping with so many restrictions, and there are other issues, she has to have the tubes changed on a regular basis, but she refuses anaesthetic to avoid any risk of damage to her vocal cords by the gas, so has to endure 30 minutes of severe pain while the procedure is done, and we are also aware that she's been held back from normal growth, she's still tiny by comparison, it was so evident on Voice Kids, and even now, she's usually wearing 5" heels when she's on stage. Emma also has to be hugely careful with what she eats and drinks, she can't tolerate milk, she wasn't properly diagnosed until she was 10, one of the procedures she had in early years has damaged her ability to vomit, which with a paralysed stomach was one of the reactions to clear the problem, so all she can do is literally taste tiny morsels of different food on something akin to a rice cracker, with great care, which has to be socially so limiting, being unable to enjoy the pleasure of a meal with friends, that's unimaginable. My original notes about this song:- She released her first single 12 months ago, LAAT MIJ EEN VLINDER ZIJN , let me be a butterfly kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nb-la5mqrrOcmWg.html You need to see the translation on screen (it's in this video) to understand the deep emotion, it's every bit as emotional as Voila, especially as she sings the section, 2:04 to 2:30, 'if only for a day, or even for a count of ten, I'd just like to live as another', and you will then see a gentle shake of her head, the pain in her eyes, the recognition of the awful daily grinding pain and reality of her situation, and then her head goes down to silence for a moment. Then she rises, physically and in the song she soars to an even greater height, as much as to say, 'This is NOT going to beat me, or define me, I WILL rise above it', an incredibly emotional moment, it was written just for her, an incredibly deep expression of her dream. I can't begin to understand how Emma has managed to hold on to such a wonderful open personality, she radiates love and happiness whenever I see her, and the depth of emotion she is able to portray in all she does is beyond powerful, she can get into the hardest heart, and melt it, and then at the same time thrill it and lift it with the power of what she portrays, and I've not heard a singer like her in a very long time, I'm 72, and I would risk saying that her particular combination of skill, talent and ability is unique, and beautiful, not just in appearance but in every aspect of her life. Her parents have done an amazing job in bringing her up through the most appalling challenge that I can imagine, and at the same time, they've helped her to have a dream, and then go on to fulfill it, along with their other two children, who are also incredibly talented, and with Andre's help, that's absolutely happened for Enzo and Emma, her dream came true that first night on the Vrijthof, she soared like the butterfly of her dream over that stage, and dominated the stage, the orchestra and the 12500 people that were there to witness the performance of her life, it's hard to realise that the video of Voila that's gone so far beyond viral (34 million views on KZfaq alone) that video was her first ever live performance of the new version of Voila. Someone commented to me in recent days that to perform like she did that night, and on subsequent big occasions, she has to have ice in her veins, and I have to admit, my reply was that to do what she does, she has an impossible combination, she has ice and fire in her veins, they can't in theory mix, but in Emmas case, they very much do, and it's that paradox that gives her the incredible ability to go beyond being a singer, beyond even being a performer, and I don't have a word to describe what the next level above performer is, but whatever name that level has, Emma produces that level of skill in ways that are in so many aspects unmatched, and yes, it's the result of her having an incredible starting point, but then taking that start and working hard to refine and develop her skill, it's an example of how driven and determined she has been to achieve her dream, I've only seen one reaction in literally hundreds that was critical of her, and it was very apparent that the problem was the reviewer, not Emma's ability, and his following is significantly small as a result. I am very happy she's with Andre for at least the next 12 months, and hopefully longer, while she is under his wing, he will protect and guide her, and make sure that vested interests in the media don't get to damage the incredibly individual that she is, he did something similar a few years ago now, Akim Camara came to his attention at the age of 3, and Andre featured him on his stage that year, and then to make sure that TV channels didn't get to exploit him and spoil his image or personality, Andre paid for his violin and piano lessons, as well as providing other assistance, for quite some time, and I'm sure that Andre has taken Emma in to his extended family to make sure that she too doesn't get hurt by people seeking to exploit her, she is a very special and precious individual, and Andre is very right to be doing everything he can to protect her and at the same time encourage her to fly as high as he knows she can, he has so clearly seen her potential, and at the same time, Emma has managed to get very deep into Andre's heart, and he is very protective of her, he feels in some ways like a second father to her, I'm almost the same age as Andre, and I can absolutely understand that feeling. A beautiful example of this is a very short video of a presentation to Emma at the end of last year, an end of season event, and Andre made a presentation to Emma, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9CdgJOIztHRoWg.html the video doesn't show much, and is in Dutch with no subtitles, there's an english explanation in the comments that are attached, but the sound track and a couple of still photos at the end convey the deep emotion of the moment, everyone, including Andre, Emma and her family were all deeply moved and affected by those few moments, and it's an indication of how deeply Andre cares for all the people around him, it's going to be so good to see how things develop from here on, I won't be surprised if Emma is still very closely involved with Andre for a lot longer than just this year. I will close with what's become almost a signature for me, and I make no apologies for repeating it to everyone reading this thread. Please, if you can, join me in making a (regular) donation to Emma's foundation, gastrostars.nl They are a possible source of treatment or even a cure for people like Emma, it would be a tragedy if Emma had to stop singing because her gastroparesis had become worse, and her foundation may be the way that new treatment or a cure can be found, one of the key members of the team is a surgeon who worked at the Maastricht hospital, she also has gastroparesis herself, and she has been forced to give up her work at the hospital because of a deterioration of her health, so her focus now is the foundation, and with her knowledge, her input will be vital. It would be so good to hear that they have made some breakthrough that will enable Emma to be free to do what she is so good at, it would mean that her other dream could also become reality, with all she's been through in her short life, that would be so good.

Exactly as @exeter1588 says, the meaning of the song is about Emma longing to have freedom from her feeding pumps and the debilitating Gastroparesis disease she suffers with. Emma co-wrote the song with the well known performer / writer Tjeerd Oosterhuis and was Emma’s first single release.
